2 Claims.
My invention relates to dry wall construction, and more particularly to reinforcing means for outside corners of dry walls.
A highly important object of my invention is the provision of a metal corner for dry wall construction which is inexpensive to manufacture and which may be easily applied to a studding.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a metal corner which will adequately protect an outside corner of plaster board wall construe tion from damage.
For the accomplishment of the above objects, I provide an elongated strip of material, preferably metal, which is formed to produce an anchoring portion and a beaded reinforcin portion, said reinforcing portion projectable angularly outwardly from a studding between adjacent edges of two sheets of plaster board angularly disposed with respect to each other.
Generally stated, my invention consists of the novel devices, combinations of devices, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of an elongated metal reinforcing strip made according to my invention, some parts being broken away; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken through an outside corner of dry wall construction and illustrating the use of my novel reinforcing means.
Referring in greater detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a studdin to which is secured, preferably by nails or the like 2, sheets of plaster board 3. The plaster board may be of any of the well-known types, such as Sheetrock. As shown, the adjacent edges of the sheets of plaster board 3 are beveled or mitered to provide a channel 4 having parallel side walls 5 and opening angularly outwardly with respect to the studding I.
The corner reinforcing element of my invention is made from an elongated strip, preferably of metal, and is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 6. Element 6 is bent longitudinally to provide an anchoring leg l and an angularly disposed reinforcing le 8. The free edge portion of leg 8 is bent backwardly and formed to provide an elongated bead 9, which is preferably ovate in cross-section, the free edge thereof abutting the adjacent side of leg 8.
In the building of a wall having an outside corner at right angles, as indicated in Fig. 2, the reinforcing element 6 is secured to the studding I by means of nails or the like III, with reinforcing leg 8 extending outwardly from the outside corner of studding I at an angle of approximately from the adjacent faces of the studding I. The sheets of plaster board 3 are mitered at an angle of 45 and nailed to the studding, with the beveled edges thereof in closely spaced relation to the reinforced leg 8 and bead 9. As shown, the reinforcing leg 8 projects outwardly through the channel 4 defined by the beveled edges of plaster boards 3 and terminates at the intersection of the planes of the outer surfaces of the plaster board wall sections 3. The channel 4 is filled with a suitable plaster or cement II, which is preferably applied to both sides of the reinforcing leg 8 and the outside of bead 9 prior to securing the plaster board sections 3 to the studding I The plaster boards 3 overlie and completely cover the anchoring leg 1 and the greater part of the reinforcing leg 8 and bead 9.
The outer folded portion I2 of bead 9 will be subject to the impact of articles accidentally striking the corner and will protect the plaster board from breakage thereby. The fill-in plaster ll finishes off the appearance of the joint, and the wall may be painted or otherwise decorated.
:My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be thoroughly adequate for the accomplishment of the objectives set forth, and While I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that the same is capable of modification without departure from the scope and spirit of the invention, as defined in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. A dry wall construction comprising a studding and two sheets of plaster board secured to the studding at an angle one with respect to the other thereof to provide an outside corner, said sheets of plaster board having their adjacent edges beveled, said beveled edges defining substantially parallel side walls of a channel opening angularly outwardly from said studding, a corner reinforcing element comprising an anchoring leg and a reinforcing leg, the free edge portion thereof being bent backwardly to provide a bead, said anchoring leg underlying one of said plaster boards and secured to said stud- .ding, said reinforcing leg projectin outwardly through the channel to the point of intersection of the planes of the outer surfaces of said plaster boards, and plaster filler between the beveled edges of the plaster boards and said reinforcing leg.

A dry wall construction comprising a stud- 3 ding, sheets of plaster board secured to the studding at right angles to each other to provide an outside corner, said sheets of plaster board having their adjacent edges beveled, said beveled edges defining substantially parallel side walls of a channel opening angularly outwardly from the outside corner of said studding, a corner reinforcing element comprising an anchoring leg and a reinforcing leg, theiree edge portion of whichis bent backwardly to provide a cross-sectionally ovate bead, said anchoring leg underlying one of said plaster boards and secured to said studding, said reinforcin leg projecting outwardly through said channel in spaced parallel relationship to the side walls thereof to the point of intersection of the planes of the outer surfaces of said plaster boards, and plaster filler between the beveled edges of the plaster boards and said reinforcing leg.
