SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,631, dated April 18, 1882.
Application filed February 21, 1882.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALEB H. BRADLEY, a citizen of the United States, resident at West Chester, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuble Improvement in Railroad-Oars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a cross-sectional view of a portion of the top of a car-body, showing my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec' tional view of the same.
This invention has relation to railway-cars; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement in the top of a car of an opening or openings of sufficient size to permitthe passage of a person, and in connection therewith of a cover or covers and fastenings therefor adapted to be operated from the inside or outside of the car, all as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the top or roof of an ordinary passenger-car, having the supporting rafters or transverse beams B. An opening is made in the top or roof, between the ribs or rafters, so that the roof shall not be weakened thereby. The marginal boards d of the opening are designed to be raised a few inches above the roof to prevent water from entering. The raised margin 01 is designed to be covered with waterproof material, which should be carefully connected to the water-proof covering of the roof.
E represents the cover, which is made with a flange, F, extending downward around the raised margin d of the opening, and the cover is designed to be covered with water-proof material.
In order to secure the cover or lid E in po sition so that it cannot be blown off, a fastening is employed which can be operated from either the outside or the interior of the car. In the drawings, 6 represents a pin, stop, or catch, secured to the inside wall of the margin of the opening; and G indicates a rotary hook extending through the cover or lid, which is provided with a suitable bearing therefor. Above the lid the handle 1 of the hook projects, so that it can be readily turned from the outside. Its engaging end being in full view on the inside of the car, it can also be easily operated by the occupants should occasion require.
One end of the cover may be hinged to the marginal frame of the opening, it desirable;
or the cover may be secured by fastenings ot' the character mentioned at both ends.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a ear-root, the man-opening 0, having the raised margin d, the flanged cover E, the catches e, and the hooks G, having handles 9 projecting above the roof, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CALEB H. BRADLEY. Witnesses:
JOHN A. MoRRIsoN, JAoKsoN SERGEANT.
