Be it known that I, JAMES H. BARLEY, of Sedalia, in oho couuty of Pettis and Stalo of Missouri, have invented oertain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and -I (lo bereby deolare the following to be a ful], clear, ancl exaot1 desoription of the invention; such as will ena-ble others skilled in the art to which in pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the aooompanying drawings, which form parl: of this specification.
My invention relates t0 an improvcment in harrows; and ib oonsists- First, in atbaohiug the seolions ofthe harrow to a single draft rod or bar by .meaus ofchains, whioh have their rear onds fastened to the oorners of eaoh seobion, which seotionsare connected together by meaus of diagonal brace-rods or ohains, and by shorb clrains, whioh are fastened t0 the overlapping ends of the rods which couneel: thefront euds ofthe beams together, and which ohains are fastened to the chaius whioh are fastened to the draft rods or Uars, as will bo more l'ully descrlbed hereinafter. lho ob- 2 jeot 0f this part ot' my, invention is to couneot the sections of tl1e harrow together by means of a drafn i1ttaol1ment which rendors the harrow-seotious more easily turned at the oorners without oramping, ancl which efieotually proveuts tl.1eir rear ends fromm swinging and olosing in upon eaoh other when an ob stacle 0r rough ground is enoountered.
Second, in making eaoh beam of tho section of the harrow out ot' double-flanged iron, and securing tl1e harrowteeth against tl1e sides or edges of these beamsin such a manner {hat they can be adjusted to stand ve'rtioally to the side of the beam, or ab anydesired inelination thereto, aooording to the direotion in whioh the harrow is drawn. Tl1e objeot ofthis part of my invention is to devise a means for making the harrow-teeth akljustable againsb the sides or edges of the double-flanged beams, instead of havlng the"teeth pass vertiea-lly -up through both 0f the fianges, as l1as heretofore been the oase, and thus enable 'rlxe teeth to be used in two 01 more positions, instead of only one.

These two cross conn eotingmods und the braoe may be mado of double-flanged iron similar t0 the beams, o1" ot' flat rods, as may bo desirled.

Instead of the chains G, a rod having its end clivide d into two prongs may be used.

I am zuvare that heretofore wlde channcl er U-shaped metal bcan1s, similar to what are shown, havc been nsed in harrows; but thc teeth have always bccn passcd np through both flangcs, and thus hold rigidly in Position, so that they are capablc of use in hat; a single position only. One of thc special features of my invention is to so connect thcse tceth to the sides of the bean1s (hat they cnn be used in two o1 more dlffercnt positlons.
In Fig. 3 is shown a block, J, having two of its diagonnlly-opposice corners cut awny, und then itand the tooth are clamped to 1he side of thc benm in betwccn the two flanges, as shown. Asthetwodiagonally-oppositecorncxs ot' thc block are cnt away, the block and teeth tnrn upon the bolt, and the flangcs act as stops so as to llmi the movcment of the blocks and thus the angle ab which thc teeth shall be inclined. In both of the above cascs the clamping-bolt acts as o pivot npon which the block und thc tooth move, and thc tooth will stand vertically to the side of the beam or be inclincd backward, according to which end cf the hmrmv is first drxuvn forwnrd.

I am well awarc that metal plates have been bolted to the sidcs of solid beams, und that thcsc platcs arc provided With flanges around their edges, as shown in thc patent to J. H. und T. K. Barlcy, Jnl y 2,1878, am] hcrc lay no claim to any such devices. Clhis invention difi'ers l'ro1n such construction in dispensing with such dcvices, andmaking thc beams control thc movcments 0t' the tecth.
Hnving thus describcd n1y invention, I claiml. In a harrow, thc combination of a drafl: l0tl or bar with the sections of the harrow, the chains G, which unitc tl1e sections to the draftrod, und the chain I, which nnites the corncr cf the adjacent section to thc chain G, substantially as shown.
2. In a harrow, the coxnbinntion of thc dmft- 1"0(1, the chains G I, and the diagonal brace 01' chain, which unitcs lhe two scctlons of the harrow together, snbstantially as dcscribcd.
3. In a harrow, the extensions E, runde to projcct beyond the two edgcs 0f the scctions ot' the hzurow, with thc chains G, which are connected to said cxtensions und nnitcthc sections of the har1ow to thc draft-bar, substantially as set fortlx.
4. In a harrow, thc combination, with thc double-flanged bcam, O, of ehe polygonal stopblocks J, und the harrow-tooth clamped thereto and against thc edges ot' thcflanges, which act as stops to thc movement of the blocks, substa-ntlally as specified.
5. In a harrow, thc oombination of a tooth holder with thedouble-flanged beznn, theplate being clzunped thercto and iuscrted betwcen the fiunges cf t;he bcan1 which holds thc platc und tooth in position, substantially as und fo1 thc purpose shown and described.
