Patented Aug. 28, 1951 UNITED STAT Es PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to chairs or seats, and more particularly to table-arms therefor.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a laterally swinging arm for a chair or other seat, said arm being enlargedto provide .atable surface upon which work may be accomplished or from which food may be eaten.
A further object is to provide an article of furniture of this class, which will conserve space.
Another object is to provide a swinging arm mechanism which is simple in construction and comparatively cheap to manufacture- An additional object is to provide a swinging arm structure which is sufficiently strong to support considerable weight without sagging or racking during use.

In the drawings:
The reference numeral l indicates a two place seat or bench having a horizontal seating surface 2 and a substantially vertical rigid back 3. The seat I is provided with a plurality of identical rigid arms 4, each of which is composed of a horizontal member 5 having its front end supported by a vertical post 6.
As best illustrated in Fig. 2, the upper end of the post 6 is provided with a vertically projecting pin portion 1 which is sheathed in an exteriorly threaded tube 8 of metal. The front end portion of the horizontal arm member 5 is vertically perforated to closely nest the bottomportion of the tube 8.
A flat table element 9 has its lower surface bored upwardly to provide a cylindrical cavity which does not extend entirely through the element. The wall of this cavity is lined with an interiorly threaded bushing ID of metal, the bushing having an outwardly projecting annular flange H which is perforated to receive woodscrews or other detents 12. ' As a means forbracing the forward or outer end of the table element 9 against sagging or racking during its swinging movement, there is provided a downwardly and rearwardly extending brace 15 the upper outer end I6 of which is rigidly connected to thebottomsurface ofthe element 9 by screws or other detents I I. The lower end of the brace I5 is equipped with a horizontally extending semi-cylindrical yoke or shoe [8 (Fig. 3).
At a desired vertical point lying below its upper end, the post 6 is provided with an encircling groove 19 which forms a cylindrical portion 20 out of the post material. The periphery of the post portion 20 is surrounded by a rigidly positioned metal wear sleeve 2| which is complemental in outside diameter to the inside diameter of the yoke 18. The yoke I8 is therefore adapted to pivot around the sleeve 2| as the outer end of the table element 9 is swung in a horizontal plane.
After the table element has thus been mounted on the post 6 and its pin portion 1, the upper surface of the horizontal arm member 5 is covered by a flat plate 22 held in place thereon by a plurality of wood-screws. One of such screws is shown in Fig. 2, and is indicated by the reference numeral 23.
The outer or front end edge of the plate 22 is arcuately cut as shown at 24, and this arcuate edge 24 is adapted to contact the curved edge portion I4 of the table element 9 and to act as a stop for limiting the rearward swinging movement of the element 9 (Fig. 1). The rearward swinging movement of the table element 9 is limited at a position in which the element is disposed at substantial right angles to the arm member 5, as shown in the right hand portion of Fig. 1.
It is thought that operation of the device is obvious.
Obviously the invention is susceptible to some change or alteration without defeating its practicability, and I therefore do not wish to be confined to the preferred embodiment shown in the drawings and described herein, further than I spaced relation to the socket, the lower end ofsaid brace extending toward said arm; a hortzontal arcuate shoe carried by the lower end of said brace, and pivotally surrounding a portion of said post, said post having meansfor prevent.-
ing vertical movement of the shoe with relation thereto.
