I i Y y T'Ihis :invention relates to .shermenssupplies andy equipment and more particularly to 'casting nets.
The principal object of the 'invention is to pro-A vide a casting net made tip-of a pluralityyof radiallyV related sections to produce a circular body, to the geometrical center of which is attached a trawl rope by which the net is cast and drawn along the bottom of a lake or other body of water. Moreover and chief among the outstanding characteristics of the invention is the provision of a multiplicity of juxtapositioned entrapping pockets about the edge of the net body, opening inwardly thereof and produced by turning the perimeter adjacent portion of the body inwardly and fastening the same at equidistantly spaced points to the body.
Another object of the invention is to provide a circular casting net having peripheral, inwardly directed pockets whose orifices are held in open position in casting by weights strung on a cord which extends in unbroken continuity around the net body. The weights serve the additional function of sinking the net to the bottom to entrap fish which are caught in the plurality of peripheral pockets. y
vWith the foregoing and other objects ln view, the invention has further reference to certain features of accomplishment which will become apparent as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a casting net constructed according to the present invention with portions cut away to denote elongation.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view with the midsection cut away and showing the lower portion in vertical section, and thereafter Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail view in vertical section showing the manner in which the entrapping pockets are formed.
Figure 4 is a schematic view on reduced scale showing the manner of employing triangular segments to produce the circular net.
Continuing with a more detailed description of the drawings, wherein numeral Ili denotes the strands of nylon or other material making up the net which is generally identified by numeral I I.
The net proper is made in circular form by a plurality of sections I4 the junctions being shown at I5 in Figures 1 and 2. The construction of the net body is such that it will spread when cast due to radial movement of the weights Iii, which are aixecl to a rope or cord I'I extending around the yperimeter of the circular body of the net and to which vfurther reference will be made presently. Y
The interior of the ynet I-I has an opening -defined by 'a hexagonal shaped lstranclor strands I8, made so by the attachment thereto of other strands making up the body of the net. To selected points on the top strands I8 are joined ropes I9 whose ends are collectively embraced by the binding 20 which carries a swivel 2l to which in turn is secured the casting and trawling line 22.
It will be observed in Figures 1 and 2 that at the apex of the net the strands are reinforced by simply doubling the cord strands as at 23 and as shown in Figure 2. This is true also of other areas subjected to strain, such as the annular section 24 adjacent the periphery or bottom of the net, to which is attached at spaced points, the cord I'I carrying the weights I6.
About the periphery of the net body is formed an annular pocket or trap 25 which has a plurality of openings or orifices 26 defined by the rope Il fastened to the perimeter of the net and carrying the weights I6. The pocket 25 is accessible from the inside of the net as exemplified in Figure 3 and is formed by turning inwardly the edge of the net and securing, by means of ties 21, the rope I'I at spaced intervals.
In order to properly cast the net I I, the end of the casting line 22 is suitably secured, preferably to the wrist and the net is suspended thereby while separating the folds of the net equally. A portion of the net is lifted separately with one hand while with the other, the body thereof is grasped adjacent the bottom and cast in a wide arc out over the water. This manner of casting will cause the weights I 6 to separate and move from the center outward so that the net will flare out and settle on the surface of the water in extended position to thereby cover as much area of the bottom as possible since the weights tend to sink in a more or less straight line and carry the net downwardly. Obviously, the perimeter of the net will precede the interior thereof to overspread such sh as may be within the confines thereof. During and after descent of the net, the fish in their attempts to escape the net, will swim outwardly, only to be entrapped in the annular pocket 25, due to the fact that the orifices 26 of the pocket are held open by the weights I 6 to receive the fish.
After the net comes to rest on the bottom, the trawling line 22 is pulled to retrieve the net,
3 whereupon the catch is removed from the pocket 25.
Manifestly, the construction as shown and described is capable of some modication and such modification as may be construed to fall within the scope and meaning of the appended claims is also considered to be within the spirit and intent of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A hand casting net for entrapping fish, comprsing a circular woven body having an annular area of reinforcing spaced interiorly of its perimeter, a cord attached to and surrounding the perimeter of said body, a multiplicity of Weights in spaced relationship on said cord, ties securing the weighted cord to an inner portion of the net at points appreciably spaced from the weighted oord, said ties being spaced from each other to define a circular pocket of unbroken continuity but having a plurality of inwardly opening orifices held normally open by said Weights'irrexpanded position of said body and a casting line attached to the interior of said body.
2. A shing net comprising a circular woven body having an annular reinforced area spaced inwardly of its perimeter, a plurality of Weights attached to the perimeter of said body in spaced relationship, means for attaching the perimeter of said body to said reinforced area at relatively spaced points to define an annular pocket of unbroken continuity having a plurality of orifices held normally open by said Weights in operative position of said net, said means comprising ties, and means attached to the interior of said body for casting and retrieving the same.
