Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patgnted Se t 21 1915 Application filed October 30,1911, Serial No. 657,632. Renewed March 11, 1914. Serial No, 824,046.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD F. DORSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the parish of Lafourche, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting Devices for Fish-Nets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in net casting devices and more particularly to that class to be used in casting collapsiblenets which are adapted to be cast in their extended position.
An object of this invention is the provision of a net casting devicecomprising a boom upon which is mounted a rotatable casting member adapted to support the net and means carried by the boom for rotating the casting member and extending the net by centrifugal force whereby the same may be cast in its extended position.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a net casting device such as described comprising aboom and a rotatable casting member mounted thereon, said casting member provided with means for engaging a net and rapidly revolving the same upon the operation of the casting member and to cast the same therefrom when the rotary movement of the casting member ceases.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a support upon which is adjustably mounted a boom with means thereon for casting a net and means for adjusting the boom and taking in the net.
A still further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in use and readily operated.
Vith the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally aportion of a boat of any suitable type, to one end of which and preferably the forward end is secured a pair of spaced uprights 11 connected at their upper terminals by a cross bar 12 and intermediate their lengths by a rod 18. The cross bar 12 has formed intermediate its lengths a pair of spaced journals 14 in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 15, supporting loosely thereon adjacent the inner faces of the brackets 14 a pair of sheaves 16.
A'strap 17 extends above the sheaves adjacent the upper edges thereof for the purpose of preventing the displacement of the cables 18 and 19 passing thereover, the use of which will be laterdisclosed. The shaft 13 is enlarged as at 20 between the inner sides of the uprights 11 and is provided at its upper side with a transversely extending groove 21 in which is rigidly secured an outwardly extending boom 22 which projects a suitable distance beyon'd the adjacent end of the boat 10. A cross head 23 is secured to the outer terv minal of the boom and is provided with a slot 24- ad acent its upperend in which is 'firmly secured by bolts 25 or other suitable fastening devices the terminal of the said boom. The lower extremity of the cross head23 is apertured as at 26 for the reception of one end of an operating shaft 27 is desired as indicated in Fig. 2 of the draw- The opposite end of the shaft 27 has 1 ings. keyed thereon a beveled gear 33 which meshes with a similar beveled gear 34f carried by thevupper end of a sleeve- 35 rotatably mounted in the ends 36 of a bifurcated I journal bearing 37 which extends-outwardly Same from the lower end of the cross head 23. This sleeve 35 has secured thereto adjacent the outer faces of the ends 36 collars 38 which limit the vertical movement of the said sleeve. head 23 is forked as at 39 for the reception of a sheave 40, while. extending forwardly from the upper end of the said cross head 28 is a vertically arranged guide 41 provided at its upper edge with spaced ears &2 between which'is mounted a sheave 13 similar to the before mentioned sheave 40. The cable 18 extends over these sheaves 10 and 43 through the guide all for engagement with the terminal of a net supporting rod ett drum and may be removed and replaced by thereto a crank arm 58 which may be rea pulley 48 as illustrated in Fig. 2 when it is desired to rotate the drum by-a motor.
The-cable 19 at its outer end is secured to an eye 49 secured to the upper edge of the boom 22 adjacent its outer end, while'the opposite extremity thereof is attached to a drum 50 mounted in suitable bearings 51 located adjacent the drum 4:6.
A ratchet wheel 52 is keyed to one face of the drum for engagement with a pawl 53 which prevents any undesired retrograde movement of the said drum. The shaft 53 which supports this drum is extended beyond one of the bearings and has keyed thereto a friction disk 54, the periphery of which is engaged by a hand brake 55, one end of which is firmly secured to the ad j acent bearing, while the opposite end thereof,is slotted for the reception of an operating lever 56 fulcrumed as at 57 to the upper edge of the bearing in such manner that upon the rearward movement of the same the band brake will be'tightened upon the disk 54 which retards the movement of the drum.
The shaft 53 has removably secured moved and replaced by a pulley 59 also illustrated in Fig. 2. A casting head 60 is firmly V secured to the lower end of the sleeve 35 and is preferably circular in plan View be- ,ing provided at its lower edge with a horizontally disposed flange 61'. This flange is cut away at its oppositesides to produce oppositely extending arms 62 for engagement with the arms 63 formed upon the head 63 of the net 415. This head 63 is secured to a central opening formed in the net and is provided with a plurality of openings 64 through whichare passed supporting cords 65, the lower ends of which are secured to The upper end of the cross the peripheral reinforcing member 66 of the not which is preferably circular in formation, while the upper ends extend through the said openings ('34 and are attached to a slidable ring GT'located upon the supporting rod 5%. The reinforcing member (36 is provided with a plurality of weights 68 which serve to insure the downward movement of the net, while the head63 through which pass the supporting cords 65 obviously moves downwardly when pull is exerted upon the rod at by means of the cable 18 causing the attached points of the reinforcing strip 66 to be moved into the said head 63 which obviously closes the lower end of the net and captures any fish which the net surrounds while being cast.
7 The operation of the device is as follows: The arms 63 are engaged by the arms 62 and the shaft 27 rotated through the desired medium, which rotation obviously rapidly rotates the casting head (50. As this head rotates the net will be revolved and moved to its extended position by the centrifugal the lower end of the net through its con-.
necting means and entraps any fish in the path of the same. In the operation of this device the boom 22 may be set at any suitable angle through the medium of the cable 19 and its winding means.
From the foregoing disclosure taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a net casting apparatus is provided for which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
.Having thus fully described this invention what I claimas new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is: V
1. The combination in a device such as described,-of a supporting member, an adjustable boom carried thereby, a rotary casting head supported by the boom, and means for rotating said head.
2. The combination in a device such as described with. a supporting member, of a boom carried thereby, a rotary casting member secured to the boom, a shaft journaled. in the boom and means for rotating the shaft and causing the rotation of the casting member therewith.
- 8. The combination with ,a supporting member in a device such as described, of an adjustable boom, a head secured to the boom, a rotary casting member carried by the head, a shaft journaled upon the boom,

means for rotating the shaft and means for rotating the casting member upon the rotation of the shaft.
4. The combination With a supporting member comprising a pair of uprights, a boom pivoted between said uprights, a shaft carried by the boom, across head carried. by the boom, a casting member rotatable upon the cross head, means rotatably connecting the casting member With the shaft, arms formed upon the casting member and a net supported by-the arms.
5. The combination in a device such as described, of a rotatable casting member, means for rotating said casting member, a head, a net secured to the head, arms formed upon the head and engaging the casting member and a supporting rod for said net movable through the casting member.
6. The combination in a device such as described, of a rotary casting member, arms formed thereon, a rod movable through said.
casting member, a net, a head secured to the net and supported by the casting member, a ring slidable upon the rod and flexible connecting members secured to the ring and net and extending through the head.
7. The combination in a device such as described, of a rotary casting member, arms formed thereon, a net, a head secured to the net, arms formed upon the head and engaging the casting member, a rod movable through the casting member, a ring slidable thereon, flexible members connecting the net and the ring and passing through the head Copies of this patent may be obtained for and means for adjusting the casting mem- V ber.
8. The combination with a support com prising a pair of uprights, a cross bar connecting said uprights, sheaves supported by the cross bar, a rod journaled in the uprights, a boom carried by said rod, a cross head upon the boom, a shaft rotatable upon the boom, means for rotating said shaft, a guide formed upon the cross head, a cable passing through said guide and over one of the pulleys supported by the cross bar, means for Winding said cable, a cable connected to the boom and passing over one of said pulleys upon the cross bar and means for Winding said cable, a casting member rotatable upon the head, means rotatably connecting the casting member and the shaft, a net, a head secured thereto, arms carried by the head, arms formed upon the casting member and engaging the arms carried by the head, arod attached to the cable which passes through the guide, said rod being movable through the casting member, a ring slidable upon the rod, flexible members connected to the ring and to the net and extended through said head carried by the net and Weights secured to the net.
