- This invention relates to a device for supporting a screen or window in convenient position while it is being painted. It is desirable frequently to paint screens or windows, particularly storm windows. It is a rather inconvenient and awkward task to handle the screen or window and support it in position so that it can be easily and conveniently painted.

This invention relates to a device for supporting a screen or window in convenient position while it is being painted. It is desirable frequently to paint screens or windows, particularly storm windows. It is a rather inconvenient and awkward task to handle the screen or window and support it in position so that it can be easily and conveniently painted.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device which is of simple construction and which can be easily secured to a support, such as a stepladder, for conveniently supporting said screen or window and holding it in position while it is being painted.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device comprising a pair of supporting members adapted to be clamped to a support at one of their ends and to extend outwardly therefrom preferably in diverging relation, the same having means for supporting a screen or window upon one edge of its frame, a pair of members adapted to be secured to said support above said members, the same extending outwardly jfrom said support and having means adapted .to enga e the screen material of the screen or the glass of the window within the fram thereof. It is another object of the invention to provide a pair of plates bent at one end so as to engage over the step of a stepladder and adapted to be clamped thereto, said plates preferably extending forwardly and outwardly from said step in diverging relation and being constructed and arranged to sup-port a frame or window on the edge of its frame, another pair of members adapted to be secured to the sides of said ladder above said first mentioned members and carrying means extending outwardly therefrom, said means having members secured at their outer ends adapted to engage the screen material of said screen or the glass of said window.
It is a, further object of the invention to provide a device for supporting a screen or window comprising a pair of plates bent at an angle at one end reversely so as to embrace the step of a stepladder and to diverge outwardly therefrom, clamping means for securing said plates to said step, said plates having portions for supporting and retaining a screen or window upon "one edge thereof, a pair of members above said -plates adapted to be secured to the sides of said ladder, rod-like members carried by said last mentioned members and movable therein to extend outwardly therefrom, means for holding said last mentioned members in adjusted position and members preferably of yielding material swingingly secured to the ends of said last mentioned members adapted to engage the screen of said screen or the glass of said window within the frame thereof.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which: a

Referring to the drawings, a device is shown comprising a pair of members l0. While these members might be variously formed, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated they are shown as made of plates having parallel edges and being bent reversely adjacent one end along a diagonal line to form a U-shaped portion having its sides and the median lines thereof diverging at an angle of approximately sixty degrees. The bent end of said plates therefore forms a yoke having a vertical side [0a and the terminal end portions I 0b. Clamping screws ll having wing-type heads Ila are threaded into the end portions IOb from the sides thereof opposite the main portions of said plates. The other ends of plates ID are respectively offset somewhat to form shallow trough-shaped portions Inc, the terminal ends llld of said plates being inclined upwardly and forming the outer sides of said troughs Iflc. It will be seen that the bent ends of plates I 0 will fit nicel over the step [2a of a stepladder l2. The plates will be disposed so as to extend over the top of the step I2a, as
thereto by turning screws 1 l.
shown in Fig. 1, so that the screws H are disposed beneath said step and can be turned to clamp plates ID to said step. Owin to the ends of said plates being bent at an angle, the plates ID extend forwardly from step Hot in diverging relation. They can be arranged on a stepladder so as to engage the sides 12b thereof with their outer edges as shown in Fig. 3.
Disposed above the plates are yokes or U- shaped members [3. Members [3 have spaced parallel sides l3a connected at their rear ends and to which are secured the hub portions I30. Portions l3c are provided with bores in which are slidable the rod-like members l4. Members l4 can conveniently be made of round rods and the same have knobs [4a at their adjacent ends. The remote ends of member IE. are flattened and embraced by the spaced lugs I5a of a member IE to which they are pivotally secured by the screws or rivets l6. Members I5 have rectangular flanges thereon in which .issecured a member ll which preferably will be made of some yielding material, such as sponge rubber. Hubs [3c are bored and threaded at their .outer ends to receive the clamping screws 26 having knurled heads 26a. One of the plates 13a, preferably the remote ones thereof, have threaded therein clamping sc1ewS2l having wing-type heads c.
Ivliembers 13 .are, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
adapted to embrace the sides 12b of the ladder l2 and to be clamped thereto by the screws 2|.
In operation members ill will be disposed, as shown in Figs. 1. and 3. They can be quickly placed in position on the step 12a and clamped Members l3 will now be placed on the sides I21; and clamped thereto by turning the screws 21. Members 14 will be adjustedas desired by moving the same through the hubs l3c with the screws 2!! loosened. When members l4 and members ll carried thereby have been adjusted as desired, screws 20 will be tightened. The screen or window 24 will now be placed on the plates H] in the trough portions lflc so as to rest thereon with its edge. The window or screen will preferably be placed with its long side resting on plates ill. The screen or window will now be allowed to rest against the members ll, which memberswill engage either the screen material of the screen or the glass of the window. Said glass or screen material will be engaged within the frame of the window or screen. It is seen that the sides of the frame of .the screen or window is not ngaged by the device at any point. The painter can now paint theside of the frame directed toward :the front of the ladder and when this is finishedthe screen or window can be lifted by its edge and turned so that the other side of the frame is exposed at the front of the ladder. This latter side can now be painted. The edges of thescreen frame or window can also be conveniently painted if so desired.
In Fig. 9 a modification'is shown-in which .the rods 14 will have their outer ends bent substantially at right angles, as shown-at I40, and a member '23 of yielding material, such as rubber or sponge rubber secured thereto.
From'the above description it will be seen that I have provided a quite simple and yet very effioient device for supporting a screen or window. The parts can be easily and quickly secured to a stepladder and the screen or window can be very conveniently painted. It will be noted thatmembers l5 and Il are swingingly connected to members [4 and the front sides of members I! can adjust themselves to the plane of the screen material of the screen or the glass of the window. The frame of the screen or window will be nicely retained in the trough portions 100. The device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and efficient. The inventor is a painter of long experience and has produced a very practical device.
It will of course be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device for supporting a screen or window having in combination, a stepladder having flat spaced steps and side members to which said steps are connected, supporting members secured to a step of said stepladder and diverging forwardly and outwardly therefrom, clamping members secured to the sides of said ladder above said first mentioned members, rod-like members carried by and movable in said clamping members, means for holding said rod-like members in various positions and members secured adjacent the ends of said rod-like members and extending forwardly therefrom adapted to engage the screen material of said screen or the glass of said window while said screen or window is supported on said supporting members.
2. The structure set forth in claim 1, said last mentioned members being pivotally secured to said rodlike members whereby they can adjust themselves to the plane of said screenmaterial or lass.
3. The structure as set forth in claim 1, said last mentioned members being made of yielding material.
i. A device for supporting a screen or window having in combination, a step ladder having flat spaced steps and side members to which said steps are connected a pair of members clamped to a step of said stepladder for supporting a screen or window upon one edge thereof, a pair of members secured to said sides respectively of said ladder above said first mentioned members and having means thereon engaging the screen material of said screen or the glass of said window without engaging the frame thereof for sup porting the same while said frame is resting on said first mentioned members.
5. The structure set forth in claim 4, said last mentioned means comprising members of yielding material.
6. A device of the class described having in combination, a support, a pair of plate-like members secured in horizontally spaced relation to said support and having means for supporting a screen or window upon an edge thereof, a pair of members secured in horizontally spaced relation to said support above said members, longi tudinally movable members carried in and extending outwardly from said last mentioned members respectively, said movable members carrying means adapted to engage the screen material of a screen or the glass of a window within the frame thereof while said screen or window is supported upon said plate-like members.

A device for supporting a framed screen or window having in combination, a step ladder having flat spaced steps and side members to 5 which said steps are connected a pair of elongated plates each bent reversely to have superposed parts with their median lines at an angle, one of said parts being longer than the other so that said plates embrace a step of said ladder with said longer parts diverging forwardly therefrom, means for clamping said plates on said step, a pair of members embracing the sides of said ladder above said plates, means for securing said members to said sides of said ladder, rods extending transversely of said ladder carried in and longitudinally movable in said last mentioned members, means for holding said rods in fixed position, and means carried adjacent the remote ends of said rods for engaging the glass of said window or the screen material of said screen while said Window or screen is supported on said plate.
3. A device for supporting a screen or window for painting having in combination, a supporting member having vertically extending spaced side members and horizontal flat members extending therebetween, a pair of plate-like members having vertically spaced parts at one end disposed above and below one of said flat members and having their longitudinal median lines disposed at an angle so that said members diverge outwardly and forwardly from said fiat member, said plate-like members having troughlike portions adjacent their outer ends for supporting and retaining said screen or window thereon, and a pair of third members secured to said vertically extending side members above said plate-like members and extending outwardly respectively therefrom in opposite directions, and means carried by and extending substantially at right angles to said third members positioned to engage the screen material of said screen or the glass of said Window to support the same while said screen or window is resting on said platelike members whereby the sides of said screen or window are not engaged by said device.
