9' Claims; (Cl. 286--5) This invention relates to a construction for use on a journal box as in a railway car truck, and more particularly; to removably secured means for reventing theentrance of dust, cinder's, and mb'isturilito the'journal b'oXi objelo't' of' this invention is to provide a detachable housing means involving no wearing parts and effectively preventing the entrance of dust and other foreign materials into a journal Another object of this invention is to provide a detachablenieansfor the elimination of themes-- en'tjdust guard used in conventional journal boxes;
further object of'this'invention is to' provide a dust deflecting means which is reinovabl'i securedto a journal box and which is easily and economicallymanufactured.
A still further object is to provide a dust defleeting housing with a" beveled surface for engagetnent with a corresponding" beveled surface a; journal BOX Bind adapted liO' be fastened theretoby' a detachable securingmer'nber.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description taken in eon uncnonwitn the drawings, in' which: 7
Fig. l is a longitudinal View partly in section of an embodiment of the invention applied to a journalbox;
Fist 2- is" a transverse vertical sectional view taken along line of'Fig. l
Fig? 3 isa transverse vertical view of the embodimentshown Fig. 2, taken from the wheel seemed" 4 is a longitudinal sectional' view taken along the line 4'-'-=4-of Fig. 3'.
Referringto the drawings in which like referenoanuineralsindicatelike parts; the numeral I'll representsa portion of a conventionaljournalbox containing a wedge I and a brass l2 resting on a journall l3. In this embodiment of the invention therjournal box It does not include the usual dust guard slot, but instead has a'single rear Wall 2 9, and zit-flange M wlth'irontbeveled edge F5 and rear beveled edge- Hi; whichextend around the entire p'eri-pher y of the journal box to provide means for: attaching the dust deflector housing I19: A wheel ll: is mounted on an axle 18' in the usual manner.
The'tdu'stdenector housing l9 comprises a pertionz2fl' which isg enerally conical inshap'eextendhag-toward the wheel H and: overlappingthe ad jacentpart of the wheelhub: 21 Conical portion 20 terminates in a vertical top flange 22:. and a flared flange or head 23 extending around the two sides and bottom thereof. When the car is in motion top flange 22 deflects the air stream away from the wheel thuspreventing dirt or water from being blown into the opening between the" housing and the wheel hub. Flange 2 2' also serves to prevent water or cinders from falling from the car structure or wheel into the opening atth'e rear oi the journal box while the car is stationary.
Extending radially inwardlyfrom conical portion 2 ll i's fiange 26, which conformstothe exterior shapeof the journal box I9; Flange 2E has a beveled surface-25 which engages the rear beveled edge 1 6 of flange M around the periphery of the journal box when the dust deflector housing is attachedtoth'e journal'box.
Extending from flange- 2 at theupper end of the housing is a-horizontal shoulder 26- having its underside 27* beveled to" correspond in slope with front beveled surface l-5of flange 2i. seen that beveledfsurface 25 on flange 24 and beveled surface 21 on" shoulder 26" form an inverted V-shaped groove which receives flange It, thus" providing'iiians for fastening the dust de- Hector housing to the journal box. Also at the bottomof opening as the housing is provided with a depending flange 28 having a lug 3| which projects outwardly to the front of, and extends along the entire base oi flange 28'.
A securing plate 32 is providedfor locking the housing to the journal box. This plate is formed with pads 36 which are beveled as shown at 33 to engage f-ront beveled edge [5 of flange It, and also has pads 3 on its. underside which bear against the: upper surface 31' of lug 3 l Plate 32 is clamped to: flange 28 by any suitable fastening means such as-rivets 35. As the plate is secured inplace the wedging action of surface 2-5 of the housing and surface 33 of the plate against flange I4 along the bottom of the journal box force the flange Id at the top of the journal box into en gagementWiththeaforementioned groove formed by surfaces 25 and 2T. Also this wedging action urges beveled surface 25' into engagement with rear beveled edge lfi of flange M aroundthe entire periphery of the journal box. In thismanner the dust deflector" housing is securely attached to the journa'lbox. makes surface contact with the end thereof about'its entire periphery.
The detachable dust deflector housing. can be readily applied or removed, is easily produced, economically manufactured. Also, it forms an efficient means for preventing the entrance of dust and other foreign materials into the box, without the use of wearing parts.
