1 V The present invention relates to new andiisjeful improvements in reels and more particularly to a portable reel for holding rolled wire for dispensing o'r unrolling desiredlngths of wire therefrom.
An important object of'th'einvention' is to provide a reel of this character including a vertical spindle supported on a base and in which the reel tapers toward its upper end for easily andquickly placing rolls of wire of various-sizes thereonand providing means for holding the roll on the reel and insuring unwinding of the convolutions of the roll in regular order to prevent entanglement of the wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel reel construction wherein the spindle is formed with a flange at its lower end to which the inner ends of radial arms are secured and the arms form supports for upwardly converging legs to provide a tapered upper end for the hub of the reel.
A still further object is to provide a base for the reel formed of a wheel which rests on its side when the reel is in dispensing position and which serves to support and roll the reel from place to place.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation. strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 3; and,
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of the friction adjusting cap at the top of the reel.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a base of annular construction and preferably in the form of a wheel having spokes 6 and a hub l. The wheel is placed on its side to form the base 5 and a standard preferably of tubular construction is fixed at its innerendson flange 19 by a bolt and .;.l J, 2 H I. i'aw-l lower/end in hub 7 and on which a tubular vertical spindle 8 is rotatable by means of a flange [0 at the lower end of the spindle resting on suitable washers .H placed on top of hubiand under flange Hi. Upper/sand lower. ball bearing lassem'hlies; l2 and [3 :are placed. internallygatgthe upper and lower ends-pf spindle 9;. ,7 1
A plurality 'ofhQriZontaL-armS ;l A are secured; fla
with the arms projecting radially from thespindle and a plurality-of :l'egs 51:6 apesecured cat their lower ends to the outer portion of arms I4 by bolts and nuts i1 and with the upper end of the legs converging to form an upwardly tapering reel construction. The upper ends of legs [6 are secured to the under side of a'frusto-conical cap i8 by bolts and nuts I9.
The cap 18 is formed with a flat top 20 which rests on the upper end of spindle 9 and a selflubricating washer 2! is placed on the flat top 20 of cap l8 with a metal washer 22 on top of washer 2| and formed with a locking lug 23 engaged in a slot 24 in the upper end of standard 8 to lock washer 22 to the standard.
A substantially dome-shaped cap plate 25 is placed on washer 22 and a screw 26 is threaded in the upper end of standard 8 with a wheel 21 at its upper end of the screw bearing on top of cap plate 25.
Arms it are formed with vertically spaced apart threaded openings 28 in which pegs 29 are selectively threaded above the top of a roll of wire 30 placed on the reel to prevent entanglement of the wire as the same is unrolled.
In the operation of the device the base or Wheel 5 is rolled into a desired locationby holding the tapered end of the reel horizontally and the base 5 then placed on its side to support the reel upright.
A roll of wire 30 is placed on the upper tapered end of the reel and locked thereon by pegs 29 which function as an upper flange for the reel, and the spindle 9 of the reel may freely rotate while the wire is unrolled or the spindle may be tightened to regulate its freedom of rotation by tightening screw 26 causing cap plate 25 to force upper stationary washer 22 downwardly on top of washer 2| and flat top 20 of cap l8.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment oi! the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A portable dispensing device for rolls of wire comprising a base, a standard rising from the base, and a reel rotatably mounted on the standard and including horizontal arms at the lower end of the reel, upwardly inclined legs rising from the horizontal arms and converging at the upper end of the reel, a hollow conical cap for the upper ends of said legs in which said upper ends are attached, and screw feed means for exerting variable pressure downwardly against said cap to variably restrict rotation of said reel.
2. A portable dispensing device for rolls of wire comprising a base, a standard rising from the base, a spindle rotatably mounted on the standard, radial arms projecting horizontally at the lower end of the spindle, legs supported at their lower ends on the arms and converging at the therein.
3. A portable dispensing device for rolls of wire 4 comprising a wheel resting on its side to form a base, a standard rising from the hub of the wheel, a spindle rotatable on the standard, a horizontal flange at the lower end of the spindle, radial arms attached to said flange, legs supported at their lower ends on said arms and converging at their upper ends to a tapered reel construction, a conical cap surmounting said spindle and rotatable on said standard with the upper ends of said legs fixed therein, and screw feed means on the upper end of said standard for exerting variable pressure against said cap to variably restrict rotation of said reel.
