This invention relates to mops or the like and disposal means for the dust etc. collected on a mop, and aims to provide a combination mop and dust bag having practical and useful improvements whereby the common unsanitary methods of disposal of the dust etc. are e1imihated and replaced by a perfectly sanitary and safe method.

The above broad as well as additional and more specific objects will become apparent in the following description, wherein characters of reference refer to 1ikenumbered parts in the accompanying drawing. It is to be noted that the drawing is intended for the purpose of illustration only, and that it is neither desired nor intended to limit the invention necessarily to any or all of the exact details of construction shown excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.

Referring briefly to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a common type of mop with the dust bag applied thereto, ready for shaking the mop out into the bag.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view of the mop and dust bag and of a disposal or trash can, illustrating one manner in which the bag may be emptied into the can.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the dust'bag per se, with the flap on one side raised.

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the mop handle, showing the bag slid up on the handle and held thereon clear of the mop to be out of the way while mopping.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates a mop comprising the handle ll having the mop proper [2 at its lower end.

.A bag I3 is open at the top, as shown at l4, and this opening is provided with a draw string I5 for tightening the open end of the bag about the mop handle II when the bag is applied to the mop in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. A slide fastener closure [6, comprising the two complementary sides H and I8 and the draw tab I9, is provided partway down both edges of the bag and through the bottom of the bag. This slide fastener is adapted to be opened partway or all the way to empty the dust etc. out of the bag into a trash can.

With the bag in the position shown in Fig. l, the mop proper l2 may be shaken out into the bag, thus preventing the dust etc. thereon from scattering to the general detriment of sanitation. After the bag has thus been emptied, the closure [6 may be opened fully and the bag slid up on the handle into substantially orapproximately the position shown in Fig. 4, so that it will not interfere with the operation of mopping, or when storing the mop. In the latter position the bag is open at the bottom and sides so that the side flap 2|] may be folded up. To

hold the bag to the handle as shown in Fig. 4, a snap fastener 2!, comprising one half thereof 22 on the flap 2!] and the complementary half 23 thereof on the handle ll, may be provided; in the elevated position of the bag on the handle the two snap fastener parts are mutually interlocked, whence the bag will be retained in the elevated position.

After the mopping operation has been completed, the flap 20 is released from the handle by undoing the snap fastener, and the bag is slid down to cover the mop, as shown in Fig. 1, and finally the slide fastener I6 is closed, whence the mop proper l2 may be shaken out in the bag I B as mentioned before.

Instead of the snap fastener 2|, any other suitable means for retaining the bag [3 in the elevated position on the handle may be used.

When the mop is to be shaken out in the bag, the draw string [5 is of course tightened.

Obviously, modifications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. The material of which the bag 13 is made is preferably any type of suitable plastic material whereof the prime property is that of being dust-proof, that is, it will not permit dust to pass through it, although any other material having the same property and which is otherwise suitable for the purpose intended, may of course be used.

I claim:

In combination, a mop comprising a mop han dle having a mop proper at the lower end thereof, a dust bag having the upper end thereof open and normally closed by a draw string, said bag being slidably mounted on said handle with said handle passing through said open end, said bag having a bottom opening slit extending acros the bottom of the bag and partway up the sides of the bag thereby providing opposed downwardly extending flaps adapted to be swung upward into doubled-back position, a slide fastener normally closing said bottom slit, and means partly on said handle and partly on at least one of said flaps for retaining said bag in elevated position above said mop proper on said handle when said bottom slit is open and said one of said flaps is doubled back in an upward direction.
