` In the instant invention.- a separate cover plate 'is provided for a part of each arm.v This cover plate is secured to the arm yand covers both of the openings through which .Ithetwo separate screws above described are lacc'essible 'This cover plate protects both of the. screws from unauthorized 'tampering or accidental shifting which might loosen or kinterfere with the adjustment of the jaws.
'In the specific embodiment of the gage herein disclosed, one arm is provided with a single jaw member and the opposite arm is provided with a pair of jaw members. The two jaws of the pair are disposed 'sidenby--vside in opposition to Athel single jaw. Each of the three jaw members is independently y"adjustable through manipula- 'tionof fits cwn'adjustm'entscrew. Eachy jaw member' is held yits own retaining screw at vany adjusted position. ' 'The gage frame lis `generally U-shaped in out- Iine as shown inFig. 1. It comprises -a'frame indicated :generally =by the numeral l0 and having a'pair 'of arms =I2 and .M respectively. Eachr of these arms is provided with a guide way for `-one "or more fgage jaws. These two l'guide ways 'ex- *ten'd transversely across one face of each arm.
The two guide ways are in direct opposition to fe'aoh other. The arm I2 is shown as 'having a guide way I6 within which a jaw lris supported 'iorl-rslidable'vmovement transversely of the arm.
l'The arm I4 is provided with a -guide way 20 within which are 4mounted. side by side a pair of gage bladesfor jaws 22 and 24. These jaws -22 and 24 =aresupported for independent slidable movement 'Within the guide way toward and, away Afrom the .jaw I8 of the-other arm. 'The jaws are of such -bethe nego andthe jaw 22 would be the ego Jaw. .Eachzjaw is adapted to be held at fits post tioii of adjustment with respectto its :opposed 3 jaw by one or more retaining screws. The large jaw I8 is shown as held by two retaining screws 26. Each retaining screw has a head portion which seats within the countersunk portion 28 of a slot 30 through which slot the screw extends to enter the jaw I8. These two screws 26 are threaded into the jaw I8. It is apparent that when they are tightened the jaw is drawn to the bottomnof the guide way and held securely at such place@ E These-slots 30 are shownffas extending lengthwise of the guide way and 'Figsrl and 3 illustrate this arrangement.
In Fig. .4, the two jaws 22 and 24 are shown as"-J each provided with a retaining screw. The jaw,3
22 is provided with retaining screw 32 ;A the jaw 24 is provided with retaining screw 34; Screw 32f4 has a head 36 which seats within,acountersunk` portion 38 of a slot 40. This slot 40 extends lengthwise of the jaw 22 and opens into the guide.5 i
way 20. This screw 32' is adapted to draw the `jaw to the bottom of the guide way tosecure it 4tion to which it is adjusted. i
Each jaw is also provided with anv adjustment screw.l In this particular construction, each jaw is shown as adjustable. One of these adjustment screws is shown in dotted outline in Fig. l but they are all shown in solid line in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The jaw I8 is provided, for example, with an adjustment screw 48. This adjustment screw 48 is .disposed entirely within the width of the arm I2 as shown in Fig. 2. Underneath the guide way I6 the arm is provided with a recess 50 Iwhich extends lengthwise of the guide way. This recess is of a depth to receive the head 52 of the screw 248. Such head has such a diameter however that it projects into the guide way space and it is there 'engaged within a slot 54 formed in the underside of the jaw I8 as shown particularly in Fig. 2.' The screw is threaded into an internally threaded opening 56 in the arm so that as the screw is threaded in or out it moves the jaw I8 in or out and toward and away from the jaws of the other v Underneath each jaw of the other arm there is an adjustment screw. The jaw 24 is provided with an adjustment screw 58; the jaw 22 is provided with an adjustment screw 6D. Screw 58 is rdisposed within a recess 59 underneath jaw 24.
Screw 6U is disposed 'within'a recess 6I underneath jaw 22. Each adjustment screw 58 and 6I) is provided with a head which serves the same functionas the head described on the adjustment screw 48. -'Ihe adjustment screw 58 has a head 62 which' is received within a recess 59 formed underneath the guide way 20 and which is engaged within a slot 66 formed in thev underside of vthe jaw'24 as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The screw has a similar head which functions in a similar manner in connection with jaw 22.
Generally speaking, the construction hereinabove 'described is similar to that disclosed and claimed in my copending patent `application Serial No. 579,807 led February 26, 1945. In such Icopending application I show cover plates over the heads of the adjustment screws. In this application I have provided a different kind of cover Yplate which serves more completely to protect not only. t he adjustment screws. but the jaw retaining '4 l screws against unauthorized tampering or accidental dislocation. I provide a cover plate for each arm which cover plate may be formed of sheet metal or the like and is of a right angle contour in sectional outline.
The arm I2 is provided with a cover plate 'I0 which is L-shaped in cross section. One flat angular portion 'I2 of this cover plate 'I0 is adapted to overlie the slots 30 of the retaining screws 26 and 26. This cover plate I0 is held in place by a screw'14 which is threaded into the arm between `the two slots 30.
This cover plate has another angular portion 'I6 which is adapted to overlie the opening to the recess 50 within which the head of vthe adjustment screw 48 is disposed so that not 4only is the adjustment screw covered by the vcoverplate but the retaining screws are likewise covered.
Ihe arm portion I4.is provided with a cover plate which has one angular portion 82 which 'covers the securing Iscrews 32 and 34 and slots 40 and 46 through which said screws extend. This cover plate has another angular portion 84v which covers the recess within which adjustment screws 58 and BIJ are disposed so as to protect these adjustment screws as well as the retaining screws from dislocation or tampering. This cover plate B0 is held-in place by a screw 86 as shown in Fig; 2.
What I claim is:
A gage comprising a U-shaped frame the arms of which are provided with opposed transversely disposed gage jaws, one arm being provided with a transverse guide way disposed in its side face, said arm having a borel extending transversely therethrough parallel to said guide way and in superposed relation thereto, f,thebore being counterbored from the outer side of said arm throughout a portion of its length, the radius of the counterbore' being greater than the distance from the center of said bore to the bearing surface of the bottom of said guide way wherebyv the counterbore throughout its length communicates with the bottom of the guide way and forms a slot therein, said bore being internally threaded along `said guide way, a jaw slidably mounted in said guide way, means for retaining the same therein, said jaw having a transversely disposed groove adjacent one end receiving the head of the adjacent screw whereby rotation of the same moves the jaw along the guide way, and a cover plate which isr L-shaped in sectional outline detachably secured to each arm with one angular porftion of the plate overlying the outer edge of the arm and covering the opening of the counterbore and the adjacent screw head disposed therein, said jaw retaining means comprising a slot in the frame armextending in the direction of jaw movement and communicating withv thel bottom of the guide way, together with a headed screw extending through said slot and threaded into an opening in the jaw, and the other angular portion of said cover plate covers the slot in the frame arm and the screw head disposed therein.
