This invention relates to heat transfer apparatus of the type employed for space heating or space cooling and is particularly directed to an improved form of air deflector or louver employed in connection with such apparatus.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an improved form of louver for deflecting air issuing from a space heater or space cooler.
Another object is to provide a compound curve louver which acts to spread a current of air laterally as well as to deflect it downwardly.
A more particular object is to provide a louver having substantially a straight horizontal leading edge and a curved trailing edge, the trailing edge being curved about a large radius in horizontal plane and being curved about a small radius in vertical section.
A further object is to provide a louver of this type which may be stamped from a single sheet of metal.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on the lines 3--3 as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the leading edge of the preferred form of louver.
Figure 5 is a plan view partly broken away showing installation of a louver embodying my invention in a space heater.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the heater shown in Figure 5 illustrating a plurality of louvers in operating position.
Referring to the drawings, the louver generally designated Hl maybe employed in connection with deflecting any stream of air and finds particular usefulness in connection with space heaters and space coolers.
While I have illustrated the preferred form of louver in connection with a space heater, it is to be understood that it is also used with space coolers of every type.
As illustrated in the drawings, the louver may be formed of any suitable material, such as metal, and extends laterally between side stiffeners l2 and It. A straight horizontal leading edge I4 is joined integrally with the side stilleners l2 and I3 and the trailing edge It: is curved in horizontal plane and in vertical section and also is joined integrally with the side stiffeners I2 and I3.
3 "Claims. (01. .98-40) The surface l6 of the louver between the leading edge l4 and the trailing edge I5 is curved about a relatively large radius R1 as shown in Figure 3. The trailing edge 15 is curved in vertical section along the relatively small :radiusRz as shown in Figure 3. The trailing edge 15 is also curved about a relatively large radius R3 in horizontal plane as shown in Figure 1. The louvers it) may be installed on the space heater H in any suitable or convenient manner. As shown in the drawings, the side stifleners I2 and I3 may be positioned adjacent the side walls l1 and I8 and maintained in position by means of clips I9 and fastening elements 20, which elements extend through openings 21.
The louvers In extend horizontally across the opening 2| through which warm air is directed outwardly by means of a fan (not shown). The air stream issues between the heat fins 22 which extend vertically in parallel relation within the body of the heater II. The air stream issuing from the opening 2| is broken up and deflected by means of the louvers In to spread the air laterally and deflect it downwardly and thus contribute to the uniform space heating. The arrows 23 illustrate the action of the louvers H3 in deflecting the stream of air issuing from the central opening 2|.
The heater Il may be of any suitable or desirable type and as illustrated, is adapted to be suspended above the floor level by means of the terminal fittings 25 and 25. An outlet 25 may be provided for connection to a stack (not shown) to carry off fumes.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim: 7
1. A compound curved louver for deflecting a current of air, comprising a curved sheet of material provided with downwardly extending side stiifeners integrally formed therewith,,the sheet having a substantially straight horizontal leading edge and a curved trailing edge, the sheet curving gradually from the leading edge to the trailing edge, the trailing edge being convexly curved in plan and curved away from the horizontal, whereby an air stream directed normal to the leading edge is spread laterally and deflected at an angle.
2. In a compound curved louver for deflecting a current of air issuing from heat transfer ap- 3 paratus, a curved sheet of material provided with downwardly extending side stifieners integrally formed therewith, the sheet having a substantially straight horizontal leading edge extending between the side stiffeners, the trailing edge of the sheet being convexly and symmetrically curved in plan and curved downwardly away from the horizontal and terminating in a horizontal plane, whereby an air stream may be spread laterally and deflected downwardly.
3. A compound curved louver for deflecting a current of air, comprising a curved sheet of material provided with downwardly extending side stiffeners integrally formed therewith, the sheet having a substantially straight horizontal leading edge and acurved trailing edge, the sheet curving about a relatively large radius from the leading edge to the trailing edge, the trailing edge being convexly and symmetrically curved in plan and being curved about a relatively small radius away from the horizontal and terminatin in a horizontal plane, whereby an air stream directed normal to the leading edge is spread laterally and deflected at an angle.
