1 Claim. 1 My invention relates to containers for persona1 use and particularly to boxes or bags which can be readily carried by the user as a container for miscellaneous items for' example, knitting, lunches, personal effects and the like.

It .is an object of my invention to provide ,a hand bag which is effectively identified as a personal article although its general appearance may be identical with many other hand bags.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hand bag of a construction so that the name of the user will be prominently displayed despite variations in position and in environment of the hand bag.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hand bag in which the parts are relatively rigid, yet in which the identification of the user can be readily introduced or as readily removed or changed.

Another object of my invention is to provide a simple, attractive, inexpensive and personalized hand bag.

Another object of my invention is to provide a way of identifying a hand bag without requiring skilled work of engraving or the like at the point of sale of the hand bag.

Other objects, together with the foregoing, are attained in the embodiment of my hand bag described in the accompanying description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective View of a hand bag constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary view to an enlarged scale in cross-section the plane of which is indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective of a name sheet utilized in connection with my hand bag and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.

While in its commercial forms, the hand bag of my invention can be embodied in a number of variant ways, it has with considerable success been embodied as shown herein. In this instance I provide a container body 6 which is of any suitable shape, yet preferably is a circular-cylindrical drum of an appropriate light, yet strong material such as acetate sheet. The drum is formed by a rolled side sheet 1 (Figure 2) having an inturned bead 8 at its bottom margin and a somewhat similar inturned bead 9 at its top margin. A bottom plate I l rests upon the lower bead 8 and serves as a bottom closure for the container drum. Preferably, the acetate sheet forming the side wall I is of an opaque nature so that the contents of the hand bag are not readily visible and preferably likewise bears a pigmentation or coloring of a suitable nature, for example, dark red.

Adapted to cooperate with the circular-cylindrical drum, I provide a cover generally designed 13. The cover includes a topplate l4 preferably of acetate material and is either opaque or transparent. The cover likewise includes a depending circular-cylindrical flange 16 having aflower inturned bead I1 and an upper inturned bead 18. Preferably the upper bead is secured to the..co,ver

sheet M by an adh'esivejunction IS. The flange I6 is made of acetate sheet of a clear or transparent nature. The dimension of the lower head I! is such that the cover frictionally engages the container 6 without difficulty.

In order to relate the cover and the drum in a more or less permanent fashion, yet to allow ready access to the interior of the container, I provide a cord 2! which passes through an aperture 22 in the cover plate I4 and likewise passes through a similar aperture 23 in the side wall 1. In the present instance, the cord 21 is doubled back upon itself and consequently passes in double form through apertures 22 and 23. The ends of the cord are provided with knots 24 to preclude ready removal at that end. A similar cord 26 is interengaged with the cord 2| and similarly passes through the cover and the side wall of the container. In this way, the cover can he slid along the cords 2| and 26 for ready access to the interior of the container yet is always easily returned to its appropriate position on the container. The cords 2| and 26 likewise serve as a hand hold for the hand bag.

The bag as so far described can be displayed for sale in a store. It is light, simple, inexpensive and attractive, yet cannot be readily identified or distinguished from other bags of similar manufacture. In order to have an element of personal distinction and to render an individual bag readily identifiable, I provide means for displaying the name or monogram or other indicia of the owner. While that can be accomplished at the point of sale, still in many department stores, for example, it is not desirable to have special equipment and personnel nor to take time for monogramming or otherwise marking the hand bag.

Under the circumstances, I preferably enclose a card (not shown) within the container at the factory and arrange that the card be mailed to the factory by the purchaser of the hand bag for manufacture of appropriate identification. Upon receipt of such card from the purchaser,

the manufacturer provides a sheet 3| (Figure 3) of a transparent acetate material flexible enough to bend to the curvature of the flange IS. The height of the sheet 3| is appropriate to let it pass between the inturned portions of the flanges l1 and I8 and is sufficient to permit the sheet to inter-engage between the flange [6 and the beads ll. and 8- Wh pp r riat y i duced therebetween, the sheet 3| remains in position against accidental dislodgment. The flexibility of the sheet helps such ready introduction.

But when they are held in place by the beads l1 and I8 and are positioned over the contrasting background provided by the drum, they are immediately distinctive and apparent so that the hand bag as a whole is readily distinguished and is appropriately ornamented.
