  • An accessory system for motor vehicles comprising, in combination with the intake manifold as a source of suction, an accessory operatively connected thereto, a control for the accessory, a suction-generating pump operable by an electric motor, a switch operable to close the motor circuit with a source of electrical energy, an electromagnet operable by the control and having an armature movable to close the switch, a locking member engageable with the armature to arrest its magnetic movement, and an auxiliary motor responsive to manifold suction for holding the locking member operative when the manifold suction is of a predetermined accessory operating degree.

Claims. 1
This invention relates to a motor vehicle accessory system in which means are provided for supplementing or replacing the intake manifold as a source of negative pressure for operating the accessory. It has heretofore been proposed to have an electric switch responsive to the intake manifold pressure for starting the motor when necessity requires. The suction influence of the intake manifold is variable and fluctuating in character, with the switch open ing and closing as the degree of low pressure rises and falls above and below the switch-throwing point. Should the suction hover about this critical degree the change in the pressure may be such as to cause the valve to flutter and open and close in rapid succession. A resultant arcing takes place between the switch contacts with needles wear and tear on the associated parts.
The object of the present invention is to provide a suction actuated. accessory system which is practical and instantaneous in operation at every demand. Further, the invention has for its object to devise a fluid accessory system in which an auxiliary source of pressure is positively brought into function in a definite manner for avoiding uncertain, and heretofore objectionable, switching over operations.
Again, the invention has for its object to provide an improved pressure unit which is compact and simple in construction and durable and eflicient in operation.
The foregoing and. other objects will manifest themselves as the following description progresses, wherein reference is made to the accompanying drawings which show In Fig. 1, a diagrammatic view of the improved accessory system;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, numeral l designates the primary source of suction or operating pressure, herein illustrated as the intake manifold of a motor vehicle engine, and 2 the secondary or auxiliary source, depicted herein as a pump, the manifold being joined by a conduit 3 to the pump outlet 4. The outlet opens from the pump chamber 5 wherein an eccentrically mounted rotor 6 operates its impeller vanes l in a clockwise direction. The pump inlet 8 is connected by conduit 9 to an accessory, such as a window operator in which a fluid motor I t has the opposite ends of its chamber selectively opened to the suction line 3, 9 by means of suitable electro-magnetic valves I! and a suitable switch 52; A check valve i3 is arranged in a shunt passage It to enable the low pressure influence of the manifold acting directly upon the accessory when of sufficient magnitude, and to permit the functioningv of the pump when the electric motor i6 is operating. Access to the shunt passage and to the check valve is gained by a removable cover plate I 5.
In accordance with the present invention the pump is driven by an electric motor 5'5 having a circuit connection l! with a source of electrical energy It and also a ground connection It. The
motor circuit is closed by the contacts 2? of an electro-magnetic switch 2!. One contact is fixed on a post 22 while the cooperating contact is carried by the armature 23 which is pivotally supported at 24 for dropping by gravity. The electro-magnet 25 is interposed in the circuit connection H by means of a post 25 and wire 21. Therefore, whenever the accessory switch !2 is manually closed the electro-magnet 25 will be energized but this will not close the circuit of the auxiliary pressure source except when the services of the pump are required.
In keeping with this thought, means are provided to preclude the closing of the pump circuit when the available manifold suction is sufficient for ideal accessory performance and to permit the closing of the circuit when the pump suction is demanded for such performance. In the illustrated embodiment the armature 23 is held against the attractive force of the magnet by a resilient locking member 23 which is held interlocked with its support by a retaining member 29 and has a locking part normally disposed in its armature-locking position, as shown by the broken lines in Fig. i. The free end of the locking member is extended at 3!] to bear upon a pressure responsive member in the form of a plunger 3! which operates in a chamber 32 against the action of a backing spring 33 when the manifold suction is ample. Should the manifold suction fall off, the spring will push the plunger outwardly and thereby force the locking member to its armature releasing position shown by the full lines. However, the plunger operation covers a time interval suflicient to avoid repeated closings of the armature switch in rapid succession when the manifold suction hovers about a semi-efficient stage. This plunger arrangement therefore constitutes a time delay one which when fully operated precludes restoration to an armature locking position. If the control switch I2 is now closed the magnet will lift the armature and close the pump motor circuit. The chamber 32 will have communication with the manifold influence through a port 3 3.
The operation will be apparent from the foregoing. When the control 12 is actuated the accessory will respond either to an ample supply of manifold suction or to a pump generated supply resulting from closed pump circuit as permitted by the manifold released armature 23. Upon releasing the control !2, the accessory will be arrested; the armature 23 will drop either by gravity or by the urge of a light spring (not shown); and the locking member 23 will again become operative.
While any suitable lock may be employed, the one illustrated relies upon the locking member 28 springing back into locking engagement with the armature when the latter is released by the magnet. The locking member has an inverted T-shaped recess 35 which provides spaced shoulders 36 designed to overhang the opposite marginal portions 3'! of the armature. From between these portions projects a tongue 38 which supports the movable contact 29; The opposite end of the armature may be suitably mounted to afford the required pivotal movement, as by pivotally interlocking the ears 24 in the seats 39 of a' suspended bracket 49. Should the manifold suction again resume an efficient degree while the motorist holds the control operative the pump motor will continue to operate since the operation of the illustrated accessory is for a brief interval of time only.
The accessory system, while embodying the advantages and ease of operation derived from utilizing the intake manifold as the primary source of energy, is always responsive to the control 12. Even with the vehicle engine at rest the accessory will operate at the demand of the motorist when he manipulates the control. And while the foregoing description has been iven in detail, it is without thought of limitation since the invention principles involved are capable of assuming other physical embodiments without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An accessory system comprising a primary source of fluctuating suction, a suction actuated accessory connected thereto operatively, an electrically actuated suction generator constituting a secondary source of suction operatively connected to the accessory, an electro-magnetic switch having a switch closing armature and an energizing coil connected in circuit with the secondary source, a control switch operable to close the circuit for energizing the coil of the magnetic switch to actuate the armature, a latch normally precluding attractive movement of the armature to a circuit closing position when the coil is energized by the closing of the control switch, and a pressure responsive release member freely movable in response to the suction fluctuations of the primary source and operable after a predetermined movement to actuate the latch to release the armature for attractive movement.
2. An accessory system for motor vehicles, comprising, in combination with the intake manifold as a source of suction, an accessory operatively connected thereto, a control for the accessory, a suction-generating pump operable by an electric motor, a switch operable to close the motor circuit with a source of electrical energy, means operable by the control to close the switch, and lock means responsive to the manifold suction to preclude the closing of the motor switch when the manifold suction is ample.
3. An accessory system for motor vehicles, comprising, in combination with the intake manifold as a source of suction, an. accessory operatively connected thereto, a control for the accessory, a suction-generating pump operable by an electric motor, a switch operable to close the motor circuit with a source of electrical energy, an electromagnet operable by the control and having an armature movable to close the switch, a lock normally acting to arrest the armature against operation, and means responsive to the manifold suction for moving the lock to an armature releasing position.
4. An accessory system for motor vehicles, comprising, in combination'with the intake manifold as a source of suction, an accessory operatively connected thereto, a control for the accessory, a suction-generating pump operable by an electric motor, a switch operable to close the motor circuit with a source of electrical energy, an electro-magnet operable by the control and having an armature movable to close the switch, a locking member engageable with the armature to arrest its magnetic movement, and means responsive to the manifold suction for holding the lock inoperative when the manifold suction is insufficient for accessory operation.
5. An accessory system for motor vehicles, comprising, in combination with the intake manifold as a source of suction, an accessory operatively connected thereto, a control for the accessory, a suction-generating pump operable by an electric motor, a switch operable to close the motor circuit with a source of electrical energy, an electromagnet operable by the control and having an armature movable to close the switch, a locking member engageable with the armature to arrest its magnetic movement, and an auxiliary motor responsive to manifold suction for holding the locking member operative when the manifold suction is of a predetermined accessory operating degree.
