1 Claim. 1
The present invention is directed to a novel, economically constructed and sturdy and durable paper holder and cutter, designed for use in stores where wrapping paper is carried in rolls and lengths thereof are withdrawn and out therefrom as needed for wrapping merchandise.
With my invention .a particularly simple, strong and .durable paper roll holder and cutter is provided, which may be mounted for use .upon and above a horizontal support, such .as .a counter or the like; or upon a side of a Vertical support; or may be suspendedfrom an overhead horizontal support, serving its functions perfectly in all of such positions. The novel structure which I have produced is very useful and a marked improvement over previous structures known to me.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description, taken --in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the paper roll holder and cutter made in accordance with :my invention,
Fig. 2 is a somewhat enlarged transverse vertical section therethrough, mounted at the upper side of a horizontal support, suchas a counter,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2, with the paper roll holder and cutter mounted against the vertical side of a support, such as a post or wall,
Fig. 4 is a similar view with :a mounting-of the device suspended from an overhead horizontal support,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical section at one end of the roll holder and cutter, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevation showing. the connection at one end of a paper cutter knife to an arm which supports it at such end, said cutter knife being supported horizontally between two of such arms.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective of a modified rod holding socket.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawings.
In the construction of the paper roll holder and cutter, a length of channel iron is shaped to provide a horizontal bottom or base I, from each of which two integral supporting posts 0r legs 2 extend at right angles. The flanges of the base length of channel extend upwardly one at each side thereof, and inwardly, one at each side edge of the posts 2. Said posts 2 may be strengthened and reinforced adjacent their edges by longitudinal beads pressed therefrom, as shown. Supporting feet 3, one adjacent each end of the base or bottom I, and of substantially inverted channel form, are located transversely of the base or bottom I and secured thereto by short bolts, as shown in Fig. 5. The feet are adapted to have fastening devices pass therethrough adjacent their ends into a counter, wall, or overhead support in mounting the roll holder and cutter for use.
A-short distance from the free endsof the posts or legs 2 and at the inner side of each of them, carrying means for a rod 4 are provided. Such carrying means each comprises a flat plate 5, which is connected by a rivet or equivalent connection at the inner side of the web of each of said posts for pivotal turning of the plate and the seat 6 of concave form which extends laterally from the opposite end portion of each plate 5 and receives the ends of the rod 3. The flanges of the posts 2 are cut away near their free ends so that said rod carrying socket members may be moved to the different positions shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. It is on the rod 4 that a roll of wrapping paper is held and supported, the rod being inserted through the core of theroll at a central axial opening through the roll. The roll of paper is indicated in dash lines in the several figures of the drawings, except Fig. 6.
At the innerside of each of the posts 2 and between the roll carrying sockets 6 and the base I, a fiat metal stirrup is permanently secured, comprising an intermediate portion l, the extremities of which are bent'outwardly and terminate in feet 8 located against the webs of the posts 2 and to which they are spot welded or otherwise permanently secured in the positions shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. Near the securing foot 8 nearest to the base I of the structure, a tongue 9 is struck outwardly from the intermediate portion 1 of each stirrup. Two arms l0, preferably arc-shaped as shown, are mounted on said tongues near one end of each of said arms, for turning movement about the tongues 9 as pivotal supports therefor.
At the end of each arm near its pivotal support 9 a short flange i l is turned outwardly and a bar I2 is pivotally connected therewith. Said bar at its end connecting with an arm H] has a widened head [2a with an opening through it and an entrance slot to the opening, provides a keyhole slot for connection of the head 32a with the flange H by passing through an opening therein in a manner well known in pivotally connecting sheet metal parts. The bars I 2 extend between the intermediate stirrup portions 1 and the adjacent webs of the posts 2, and slidably pass through second tongues 9 which are struck one from each intermediate stirrup section I. A coiled compression spring i4 is around each bar I 2, bearing at one end against its associated tongue I 3, and at the other end against the shoulder between the bar I2 and its widened head He.
Each of the arms adjacent its outer free end has an opening of the form or shape shown at [5. A cutter bar 16 of sheet metal of a shallow channel form and having cutter flanges extending from the side flanges of the channel, extends horizontally between the outer ends of the arms (0 and is provided with a locking tongue and extension IT at each end so that the two ends of the cutter bar iii are connected with the arms H] by the passage of the securing tongues i. through the openings I5. The cutter bar has a limited capacity of rocking movement about its longitudinal axis so that its cutting flanges ride against the surface of a roll of paper and follow it as the diameter of the roll decreases upon using up paper for wrapping purposes.
As shown in Figs. 1 and-2, the paper roll holder may be mounted with the posts 2 extending vertically and with the feet 3 secured at the upper side of a horizontal support, for example, a counter. The roll holding rod 4 will be carried by the socket members 6 for receiving it at its ends below the pivotal connection of said socket members to the webs of the posts 2. The arms In will extend outwardly to one side and up wardly, as shown. The structure may also be mounted as in Fig. 3, against the vertical side of a support with the legs 2 extending horizontally outward therefrom and the socket members for the rod 4 turned to a position ninety degrees from that in Fig. 2. The arms It carrying the cutter knife 15 extend upwardly and over the paper roll indicated in dash lines. In Fig. 4, with the device suspended from an overhead support, the socket carriers for the rod 4 are positioned vertically, but turned through an angle one hundred eighty degrees from the position shown in Fig. 2.
The arms l0 carrying the cutter knife 15 extend outwardly and downwardly. In all of the positions the force of the springs l4 maintains the cutter I6 against the outer surface of a roll of paper and lengthwise thereof. The paper may be unrolled as much as needed and then severed from the roll in the usual manner by bringing it against the cutter bar 16.
The modified rod support shown in Fig. 7 may be used in place of the support 5--6 and comprises a three way socket 6a the base 512 of which is attached to the post 2 as by welding. The socket Ed has one open side and three semi-circular seats in any one of which the end of the roll supporting rod 4 may rest by gravity in any of the three positions in which the device may be mounted.
The structure described is of a sturdy, durable and economical character. The parts are all of sheet metal, except the rod 4, which also may be of metal if wanted. The fabrication of the parts and their assembly is simple, practical and easy.
The invention is defined in the appended claim and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
A paper roll holder and cutter comprising, a main support having a base and spaced side members adapted to be mounted in one of three positions in which said arms extend horizontally from the base, vertically upward from the base, or vertically downward from the base, arms pivotally mounted on the side members, a cutter blade mounted on the swinging ends of said arms, and a socket having an open upper side rotatably mounted on each of said spaced sides, said rotative mounting of each socket being offset from the center thereof in a direction toward its open side.
