COMBINED ASH TRAY AND EXTINGUISHER Filed. May 5, 1948 Fig./.
'Fre'd N. Durb/n INVENTOR.
Patented July 3, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINED ASH TRAY AND EXTINGUISHER Fred N. Durbin, Cairo, Ill. 4 I
Application May 5, 1948, Serial No. 25,159
2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in ash trays of the type adapted for containing water for dipping cigarettes or cigars therein to extinguish the same and thereby obviate fire and other damage resulting from burning cigarettes or cigars falling off ash trays onto rugs, furniture, and the like.
An important object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive, simply constructed ash tray equipped with a water container providing a well for dipping cigarettes, and cigars, therein, and. in which water from a storage source is maintained at a constant level so as to prevent the water from being thrown out of the well when the ash tray is moved about on a table, stand, or the like.
Another object is to provide an ash tray with such a water container and with an ash receptacle removable separately for cleaning purposes and without disturbing the water container.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, the prefered embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my improved ash tray in the preferred embodiment thereof;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the ash receptacle;
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 1 and drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, according to my invention, as illustrated, an ash tray is provided comprising a water container I including a base plate 2, preferably circular, a pair of annular outer and inner side walls 3, 3 rising from said base plate 2 in spaced apart relation with said outer Wall 3 extending along the edge of said base plate I, and a top 4 bridging said side walls 3, 3'. A comparatively small segmental opening 5 is provided in the top 4 and a pair of transverse partition Walls 6, I are provided in said container at opposite sides of said opening 5 and which form with said opening 5, side walls 3, 3, and base plate 2 on open top well 8 in said container for receiving water 9 from said container. One of the partition walls, for instance 6, is provided with a lower corner notch I 0 forming an opening for admitting the water 9 from the water container I into the well 8 and maintaining the water in said well at a 0W level. A screw plug I I is provided for closing a filler neck l2 depending from the top 4 into the water container I. As will be seen, the described water container I forms substantially a bowl.
An ash receptacle I3 is telescopically and removably fitted in the innerwall 3 of the water container I with a plurality of trough-like cigarette 0r cigar rests I4 suitably attached to the upper edge thereof to extend across the top 4 of the water container I.
As will be manifest, lighted cigarettes, or cigars, may be dipped in the water 9 in the well 8 to extinguish the same before depositing the stubs on the rests I4, or in the ash receptacle I3, thereby reducing to a negligible factor the usual fire hazard resulting from lighted cigarettes, or cigars, falling off the rests of the usual ash tray, or toppling over the edge of such trays. Because of the low water level established in the well 8 by the notch II), the water in the well 8 will not be thrown out of the same onto tables, stands, and the like on which the ash tray is deposited and moved about This renders the use of water in the tray comparatively safe. The ash receptacle I3 may be removed separately for cleaning and emptying without disturbing the water container I as by tipping the same or picking up said water container and thereby spilling water out of the well 8.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In an ash tray, a water container including a base plate, a pair of annular and inner side walls, respectively, rising from said base plate in spaced relation, a top bridging said side walls and having an opening therein, a pair of transverse walls in said container at opposite sides of said opening forming with said opening, side walls and plate an open top well in the container, one of said transverse walls having an opening therein at the bottom of said well for admitting water from the container into said well for extinguishing cigarettes dipped into said well, an ash receptacle telescopically fitted in the inner wall, and cigarette rests on said ash receptacle extending across said top of the water container.
2. In an ash tray, a water container including a base plate, a pair of annular outefland inner side walls, respectively, rising from said base plate in spaced relation, an annular top bridging said side walls and having an opening therein, a pair of transverse walls in said container at opposite sides of said opening forming with said opening, side walls and base plate an open top well in the container, one of said transverse walls having an opening therein for admitting water into said well from *thezcontainer to extinguish cigarettes dipped intosaid well, an ash receptacle telescopically fitting downwardly in said inner wall and top, and cigarette rests on said ash receptacle extending across said top of ztheawatericontainer.
