This, obviously, is highly undesirable.

Shipping cases have been made in which the reels are restrained from movement to some extent such as that disclosed by Jacob M. Goldberg, in Patent No. 2,151,025, dated March 21, 1939, wherein the reel sides are prevented from moving toward each other at spaced points about their periphery. While a construction such as shown in the patent reduces damage to the lm, and especially where the reel flanges are relatively rigid to resist forces exerted between the points of support, it has been found that damage may be further minimized by supporting the flanges throughout a substantial part or all of their periphery and preventing them from moving apart as Well as toward each other. This is especially important where the anges are thin and have little resistance to impact forces. While the patented construction prevents outward movement of the iianges when the case is full of reels, it will not do so if the case happens to have less than the full amount for the reason that outward movement of a flange is prevented only vwhen there is another flange adjacent thereto.

In the present construction the reels receivethe same support regardless of whether the case is full or less than full of reels.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the meta case lli is of usual construction substantially as shown in the patent ref-erred to and Will therefore be described with no greater detail than necessary for the purpose of explaining the present invention.

The case comprises a bottom portion B and a cover C and when the cover is closed the case is octagonal in shape as shown in Figure 1. The cover is hinged to the bottom by a substantially square ring il pivoted to lugs I2, I3 secured to one side of the case. A lug I4 on the opposite side of the case pivotally carries a similar ring I5 which pivotally carries a hasp I6, the latter engaging a staple Il, and a lock i8 securing the hasp and staple in locked position.

A plurality of strips I9 are secured to the bottom half of the casing and identical strips 20, ex-

cept for their length, are secured to the upper ,half or cover. As best shown in Figures 4 and 7,

these strips have grooves 2| adjacent their edges which are semi-circular in cross section to con- .form to the beads 22 on the edges of the reel anges R. The strips in the bottom half of the casing are substantially semi-circular, each having an offset portion 23 (see Fig. 6) and a Aprojecting end 24 which is clamped to the bottom half by a turned over edge 25 on each of the Any. suitable cardboard or ber board 21 may be employed as a lining in the case if desired, but is not essential to the invention.

The strips 20 in the cover may be secured in Atogether without use of hinges. -modications within the spirit of the invention 3 the same manner just described; however, it has been found that they may be made somewhat shorter than semi-circular. As shown, each strip has an olset portion 23a, the strips being secured to an angle member 28 by rivets 29, and the angle members secured to the casing Walls 3| by rivets 30.

It will now become apparent that any number of strips I9, 2U, may be employed, depending upon the Width of the case which may accommodate from one to any desired number of film reels. It Will also be apparent that each strip secures the reel to the case independently of any other strip and in event the case is not completely filled, each reel will, nevertheless, be supported against movement in all directions. The strips in the cover may be semi-.circular the same as in the bottom, if desired, and the mode of securement may be varied as will occur to those skilled in the art. While the grooves 2l have been described as semi-circular, it will be apparent that they may be of any cross-sectional shape to conform to the particular edges on the reel anges. For example, if the anges are flat at the edges, rather than beaded, as shown, then the grooves would be shaped accordingly to receive the flat iianges. The case, also, need not necessarily be cctagonal and may be cylindrical,

square or other shape. While the hinged conit is apparent that the two halves may be secured Many other will become apparent and it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise disclosure ex- `cept as dened by the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:

1. A case for the handling and transporting of a 4moving picture reel having spaced circular flanges thereon, comprising; two cooperating parts, one being an open sided bottom portion adapted to have the reel inserted therein, and the other an open sided cover portion adapted to close-the bottom portion, paired means for holding the reel within the case in predetermined relation thereto, one of the paired means being secured to .each of the cooperating parts, the paired means extending arcuately about a substantial portion of the reel, each of the paired means comprising spaced parallel channel members of U-shaped cross section, each channel member having side walls joined by a bottom wall, the side walls of each channel member being spaced apart to receive a reel flange therebetween with the reel flange abutting the bottom wall, the side Walls of the channel members preventing any substantial movement of the reel flanges in either direction perpendicular thereto, and the bottom walls preventing any substantial movement of the flanges in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the reel.

2. A case in accordance with claim 1 wherein the paired means for holding the reel in predetermined relation are each secured at their ends to one of the cooperating parts.

3. A case for the handling and transporting of a plurality of juxtaposed moving picture reels comprising; two cooperating parts, one being an open sided bottom portion adapted to have the reel inserted therein and the other an open sided cover portion adapted to close the bottom portion, means for holding the reels within the case in predetermined relation thereto, said means being secured to the cooperating parts and extending about a Substantial portion of the reel and having spaced channels of a width to receive the edges of each reel so proportioned thereto that each reel flange is prevented from movement in either direction perpendicular thereto and each reel is spaced from an adjacent reel, the fianges of adjacent reels being out of contact with each other and individually supported against said movement.

4. A case in accordance with claim 3 wherein the reel holding means comprises a plurality of elongated juxtaposed members secured to the casing by the same means which secures them in juxtaposed relation.

5. A case in accordance with claim 3 wherein the reel holding means comprises a plurality of elongated members, means for securing the ends of the members together, and means for securing the aforesaid means to the case.

6. A case in accordance with claim 3 wherein the reel holding means of the bottom portion Vcomprises a plurality of elongated members, secured together and to the bottom portion by a folded over edgeof the latter.

7. A case in accordance with claim 3 wherein the reel holding means of the cover comprises a plurality of elongated members secured together at their ends by an angle member, the latter being secured to the case.

I8. A case in accordance with claim 3 wherein the reel holding means comprises a plurality of elongated members, each having a portion bent laterally at its ends, the lateral portions being secured to the case.

9. A case in accordance with claim 3 wherein the reel holding means extends about the reel a sufficient distance to support an unsupported portion thereof by its inherent rigidity.

10. A case for the handling and transporting of moving picture lms comprising, a lower portion for receiving reels and an upper portion for closing said lower portion, the two portions being joined near a plane extending diametrically and axially of the reels, a plurality of elongated strips having channels along their edges, the channels being proportioned to the reel flanges so that when a reel is seated ther-ein, the flanges of the reel are precluded from movement perpendicular to the plane of the reel, means including turned over edges of one portion of the case for securing strips together and to the case, and means including angle members for securing strips together and to the other portion of the case.
