This invention relates to a spindle actuated door latch and in particular to an auxiliary bclt type deadlocking mechanism therefor.
One object of the invention is to provide a deadlocking auxiliary latch belt for a spindle actuable door latch. Another object is to provide a deadlocking mechanism for a spindle actuable door latch which prevents jimmying the latch bolt out of the striker plate recess when said auxiliary bolt is in depressed position. further object is to provide an auxiliary latch bolt type deadlocking mechanism which permits retraction of the main bolt as well as the auxiliary bolt by the operation of a spindle through the knobs or key to laterally move the retractor bars.
These and other objects are attained by my invention, which will be understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View showing my latch bolt mechanism as applied to a door;

Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the latch encased mechanism, disconnected from the operative spindle mechanism;

Referring to the drawings, which show a preferred form of my invention the latch bolt unit indicated generally at 2| is shown as installed in the edge of a door D, being attached by the flush plate 22 held by the screws 23. The main bolt 23 extends into the recess 25 in the door casing C through the strike plate 26 which is fastened by screws 2'! to the casing. The latch bolt opening 28 in the strike plate 25 is arranged of suitable size to receive the main bolt 2d, the auxiliary bolt 2%? being held in depressed position against the face of the strike plate when the door is in closed position. When the main latch bolt as is forced inwardly by the strike plate 25', it carries in with it the auxiliary latch bolt 29 because the inner face 6d of the main bolt engages the cross arm 66 of the auxiliary latch bolt 29. When the main bolt 25 then projects into the recess 25, the auxiliary bolt 29 is held in the depressed position against the strike plate. In open position, the auxiliary bolt 28 extends even with the outer end of the main latch bolt 24. The main and auxiliary latch bolts 24 and 29 may be simul taneously drawn into the latch bolt housing 33 by means of the main bolt retractor bar it and the spring retractor bar 49 by means of the retractor cage 31 having opposed fingers 32 which engage the retractor bars at the shoulders 33 and 34. The mechanism for reciprocating the retractor cage 3! is housed in a housing 35 having a peripheral opening 35 into the edges of which the ears 3'! of the inner end of the latch bolt housing 39 extend, thus connecting the latch bolt unit to the housing 35 for the reciprocating mechanism.
The main latch bolt 24 is provided with a stop collar 36 which abuts the inwardly extending rim 39 of the flush plate 22 extending over the bolt end of the latch bolt housing 3E to limit the outward movement of the main latch bolt. The main latch bolt retracting bar it (Figure 11) is attached to the main bolt 24 by the screw i! in the bolt, the end of the bar 46 extending into the hole 42 provided in the main bolt 24. At the opposite end of the bar is provided a head 3-3 forming the shoulders 33 to which the fingers 32 of the retractor cage are engaged to pull the bar it. The main bolt retracting bar 49 is also provided with a centrally disposed hole ill in which the pivot 5! for the dogging bar 5 5 is mounted. The main bolt 24 (Figure 8) is provided also with an extension 45 projecting into the latch bolt housing 38 and adapted to hold in the hole 4 5A one end portion of the coiled spring as, the other end of said spring being supported on the knob ii projecting inwardly from the end closure 48 of the housing 30.
A spring retractor bar 49 (Figure 12) having a head 49A with shoulders 34 engageable by the fingers 32 of the retractor cage 3|, is disposed in face-to-face relation with the main bolt retracting bar 46. The spring retractor bar 49 at its inner end is provided with a spring holder tab 52 adapted to hold one end of a coil spring 55, and is also provided with aligner tabs 53 and 54, adapted to hold the retractor bars 46 and 49 in alignment, the tab 54 adjacent the spring also preventing the pivotal movement of the dogging bar 56 when the two bars 40 and 49 are pulled by the fingers 32 of the retractor cage 3|.
The dogging bar 56 (Figure 10) is adapted to lie in face-to-face relation with the main bolt retracting bar 46 and is pivoted thereto by the pivot pin 5|. The inner end of the dogging bar 56 is provided with an upstanding lug 58 which is adapted to fit as a cam follower in the groove 61 of the cross-arm 66 of the auxiliary bolt 29 as will be later described. The end of the dogging bar adjacent the lug 56 is also tapered at 51 so that relative movement of the retractor bar and the spring retractor bar 49 and the tab 54 aligns the dogging bar 56 with the retractor bars 49 and 49. The dogging bar 56 is also provided with a side arm 59 which is disposed near the pivot bearing 59 for the pin 5|, and is adapted to hold the end of the coil spring 55 so that the pressure of said spring tends to turn said dogging bar 56 into dogging position, i. e. so that the notch 6| abuts the inside face of the end closure plate 48 at the slot 62 through which the retractor bars 46 and 49 extend to be engaged by the retractor cage means. The extreme inner end 56A of the dogging bar 56 also protrudes through the upper portion of the slot 62 in the end closure 43.
The auxiliary bolt 29 which is positioned in face-to-face relation with the side of the main latch bolt 24 protrudes through an opening 63 in the flush plate 22 adjacent the opening therein for the main bolt. A cross-arm 66 is attached to or is integral with the inner end of the auxiliary bolt 29, the cross-arm being provided on its underside (top side, as shown in Figure 9) with a cam groove 61 adapted at times to engage the upstanding lug 58 on the dogging bar 56. The cross arm 65 is adapted to abut the inner face 64 of the main bolt 24 to limit the outward movement of the auxiliary latch bolt 29. ment of the auxiliary bolt 29 is guided by the semi-circular guide groove 10 in the forward end of the casing 30, and by the pin 1| extending forwardly from the closure plate 48 into the hole 12 of the auxiliary bolt 29, the coil spring 13 pressing the auxiliary bolt outwardly.
The end closure 48 for the inner end of the latch bolt housing 30 is fastened by the tabs 68 fitting in the slots 69 in the housing.
When the auxiliary bolt 29 has been depressed upon the closing of the door by the strike plate 26, the cross-arm 66 is moved inwardly so that the cam groove 61 is moved out of engagement with the upstanding lug 58 on the dogging bar 56, thus allowing the spring 55 between the tab 52 on the spring retractor bar 49 and the side arm 59 on the dogging bar 56 to turn the bar 56 on the pivot 5| to dog the main bolt retractor bar 49, thereby preventing inward and unlocking movement of the main bolt 24. When, however, the retractor cage 3| is actuated to pull the main bolt retractor bar 40 together with the spring retractor bar 49, the movement of the main latch is not stopped or dogged because the dogging bar 56 is aligned with the main retracting bar 40 by The movethe tab 54 which permits the free movement of the retracting bars without the dogging action.
When the bolts 24 and 29 are not in engagement with the strike plate 26 and both are in extended position, they may both be drawn into the latch bolt housing 36 by the retractor cage 3| whose fingers 32 engage the heads 43 and 49A of the retractor bars, or are pushed together from their outer ends because the groove 61 holds the lug 58 in alignment so that the dogging bar does not turn on the pivot 5|. Upon pulling the main bolt 24 by the retractor cage 3| the fingers first engage the head 49A of the spring retractor bar 49 and move the bar 49 sufficiently rearward so that lug 54 on the bar 49 will engage the edge 51 of the dogging bar 56 to swing the dogging bar to undogged position. Thereafter the retractor cage fingers 32 will engage the head 43 of the retractor bar 40 and thus retract the main bolt 24 as well as the auxiliary bolt 29.
The advantages of my invention will be ap parent. The main bolt is dogged against jimmying or inward movement at all times when the latch is normally engaged in the strike plate recess. The bolt is readily retracted by the operation of the retractor cage fingers operated by the conventional spindle. The auxiliary bolt does not interfere with the latching of the main bolt when it passes over the strike plate into the recess. The parts may be accurately duplicated and assembled to an operative device without individual adjustment.
I claim:
1. In a latch bolt mechanism, a main latch bolt adapted to be normally resiliently held in extended position; a retractor bar secured to said main latch bolt, said retractor bar having means at its inner end adapted for engagement by a retracting means; a dogging bar pivotally mounted on said retractor bar, said dogging bar having a dogging notch at its inner end and a slot follower lug adapted to prevent movement of said notch into dogging position; a spring retractor bar having a head at its inner end adapted for engagement by a retracting means, said spring retractor bar having upstanding lugs adapted to align said dogging bar with said retractor bar; spring means between said spring retractor bar and said dogging bar adapted to hold said dogging bar in dogging position; and an auxiliary bolt having slot means cooperating with said slot follower lug to prevent said dogging bar from turning into dogging position.
2. In a latch bolt mechanism, a main latch bolt adapted to be normally resiliently held in extended position; a retractor bar secured to said main latch bolt, said retractor bar having a head at its inner end adapted for engagement by a retracting means; a dogging bar pivoted to said retractor bar, said dogging bar having a spring holding arm extending therefrom and a slot follower lug adjacent its outer end adjacent an auxiliary bolt; spring means associated with said dogging bar adapted to normally hold said dogging bar in dogging position; a spring retractor bar having a head at its inner end adapted for engagement by a retracting means, said spring retractor bar having aligning lugs adapted to undog said dogging bar when said spring retractor bar is retracted; retractor means adapted to engage the heads of said retractor bar and said spring retractor bar and to pull first said spring retractor bar and then said retractor bar longitudinally; and an auxiliary bolt having slot means adjacent said slot follower lug on said dogging bar, said.

3. In a latch bolt mechanism of the character described, a main latch bolt; a latch bolt housing; an auxiliary bolt; a retractor; a retractor bar conmeeting said retractor and said main latch bolt; a dogging member pivotally mounted on the side of said retractor bar intermediate the ends of said retractor bar; spring means associated with said pivotally mounted dogging member whereby said dogging member is rotated to abut the inside end of said latch bolt housing when said auxiliary bolt is in depressed position; and means whereby the pulling movement of said retractor bar by said retractor first undogs said dogging member and then retracts said main latch bolt, and also said auxiliary bolt when said auxiliary bolt is in extended position.
4. In a latch bolt mechanism of the character described, a main latch bolt; a latch bolt housing; an auxiliary bolt; a retractor; a retractor bar conmeeting said retractor and said main latch bolt; a dogging member pivotally mounted on the side of said retractor bar intermediate the ends of said retractor bar; spring means associated with said pivotally mounted dogging member, whereby said dogging member is rotated to abut the inside end of said latch bolt housing when said auxiliary bolt is in depressed position; and a spring retractor bar adapted to independently move parallel to said retractor bar to align said dogging member with said retractor bar whereby the pulling movement of said spring retractor bar by said retractor first undogs said dogging means and then retracts said main latch bolt and also said auxiliary bolt when said auxiliary bolt is in extended position.
5. In a latch bolt mechanism of the character described, a main latch bolt; a latch bolt housing; an auxiliary bolt; a retractor; a retractor bar connecting said retractor and said main latch bolt; a dogging member pivotally mounted on the side of said retractor bar intermediate the ends of said retractor bar, said member having a groove-follower lug disposed adjacent said auxiliary bolt; spring means adapted to normally hold said dogging member in dogging position; and groove means in said auxiliary bolt coacting with said groove-follower lug and arranged to release said dogging member for actuation by said spring means when said auxiliary bolt is moved inwardly whereby to turn said dogging member to abut the inside end of said latch bolt housing said groove-follower lug of said dogging member holding said dogging member in undogged position when said auxiliary bolt is in extended position.
