S. M. CHURCHILL.
NUT LOCK.
Patented Apr. 4,1882.
No. 255,839. 12y;
Q I "VEA/l SAMUEL M. CHURCHILL,
NUT-
' PATENT OFFICE.
OF STATE CENTRE, IOWA.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,839, dated April 4, 1882.
Application filed June 11, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. CHURCHILL, of State Centre, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railway-joint provided with my improved nut-locking device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section through the fish-plate (or washer-plate, as the case may be) with its key. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the key detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all thefigures.
This invention relates more especially to devices for locking the nuts upon the fish-plate bolts of rail-joints, so as to prevent them from working loose by the constant jarring caused by passing trains; and it consists in the detailed construction, combination, and arran gement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
My invention is adapted to be applied to the fish-plates of the rail 'oints in the construction of new lines of railway, or, where the road is already constructed with the ordinary fishplates, it may be appliedto these in the form of auxiliary fish-plates or washer-plates. In
either case the construction and operation of my device is the same.
In the accompanying drawings,A designates a fish-plate or a washer-plate, as the case may be, which has the usual bolt-holes, a. The plate is cut between each pair of bolt-holes with a suitably-constructed die to form two semicircular slots, and the parts formed by said slots are bent outwardly to form tongues B B, with a central solid part, O.
D is the key or 1ock-plate, which is made with a slot, d, and flanged ends e e. To make the plate more stiff and rigid the upper edge mayalso be flanged, if desired. After the nuts have been screwed home a key is slipped between each pair of nuts upon the shank formed by the tongues B B, with theircentral part, 0, with its flanged ends bearing against the sides of the nuts, as shown in Fig. l ofthe drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a nut-lock, the combination of the plate A, having formed with it tongues B B, standing out from said plate, and providing spaces between them and the plate A, and the angupermit its legs to fit or beinserted between the tongues B and the plate A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL M. CHURCHILL.
