OASSIUS HOLTON, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, AS'SIGNOR OF ONE HALF HIS RIGHT TO PULASKI FARWELL, OF FREDERIGKSVILLE, ILLINOIS.

IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS,

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,021., dated September 21, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.

To all tchom it may concern:

Be it known that I, (J. HOLTON, of Reading, in the county of Berks and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self Locking Nuts and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with a bolt and nut, of a washer having a bearing-face for the nut inclined in respect to the axis of the bolt, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertaihs to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a View, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a View, showing its application to railroad-joint.

The object of my invention is to lock nuts on bolts so that they cannot come loose by jarring; and this I accomplish bysiinply bending the end of the ordinary bolt, when screwing up the nut, to lie flat against an inclined or wedge-shaped Washer, through which the bolt passes.

A represents the bar or other article through which the bolts B B pass.. '0 O are the ordinary nuts, to be screwed on the bolts for fastening the same. On each bolt B, before the nut O is put on, is placed a washer, D, which is made Wedge shaped or, in other words, has its bearing-surface for the nut inclined in respect to the axis of thebolt.

ln screwing up the nut, its inner surface first strikes the thickest portion of the washer, and, as it is still farther turned, the end of the bolt is bent until the nut is screwed up flat against the bearing-surface of the washer.

In railroad-joints the fish joint may be inclined to take the place of the washer.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i The combination, with a bolt and nut, of a washer having a bearing-face for the nut inclined in respect to the axis of the bolt, as set forth.
