4 Claims. (01. 20644) This invention relates to improvements in shipping and display cartons.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a shipping and display carton which is of novel construction and is adapted when in a knocked down condition to occupy but small space which is advantageous for shipping purposes. At the same time the carton is readily set up for filling, is arranged for compactness in shipping when filled, and is easily set up for display purposes.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figs. 1 and 2 are plan views of opposite sides of the carton in knocked-down condition;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3 of 1;
Figs. 4 and 5 are front and side elevational views of the carton in display relation;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the carton when filled and in a holder for shipping purposes; and
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the bottom portion of one section of the carton.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The carton will be formed from a sheet of suitable material, such as cardboard or the like and is scored for relative movements of the parts. In a general way the carton includes two relatively hinged sections.
Inner walls 2 and 4 are hinged at 5 and have side walls 6 and I0 hinged to one side edge thereof and opposite side walls 8 and I2 hinged to opposite side edges.
Outer front walls l4 and I6 are hinged to the side walls 6 and I0 and have opposite side walls 8' and I2 hinged to their longitudinal edges which are secured to the side walls 8 and I2 by adhesive.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the carton is in a knockeddown flattened condition for shipment but may be formed into a tube, as shown in Fig. 3, for purposes of filling.
An end wall I6 is hinged to the outer end of wall l4 and a flap I8 is hinged thereto. End tucks 20 are hinged to outer ends of the side walls 6 and 8. The end wall and tucks are brought into overlapping relation and the flap I8 is inserted against wall 2 to close the end of the carton and hold the walls in set-up relation. This end of the carton will be referred to as the upper end of one section.
An end wall 22 is hinged to the outer end of wall [6 and a flap 24 is hinged thereto. End tucks 26 are hinged to the outer ends of the side walls It! and I2. The end wall and tucks are brought into overlapping relation and the flap 24 is inserted to lie against the wall 4. This holds the walls in set-up tubular relation. This will be referred to as the bottom end of the other carton section.
As stated, the walls 2 and 4 are hinged at 5 for swinging so that the two sections of the carton may be superposed and inserted in a tubular holder 28, as shown in Fig. 6. The carton sections in said figure are indicated by 30 and 32.
An inner easel section 34 is hinged to the outer end of wall 4 and has an outer section 36 hinged thereto which is provided with a flap 38.
With the carton sections swung relative to one another on the score line 5, the flap 38 of are superposed as in Fig. 6.
The carton sections may be filled when theparts are in tubular form and then the sections may be superposed as in Fig. 6. Or the carton sections when in tubular form may be superposed and then filled.
The walls 2 and 4 are provided with transversely spaced elongated slots or slits 50 and 52,
see Fig. 1. The section 42 of the display member is provided with tabs 5 which extend through the slots 50 and similar tabs 56 on the section 44 of said member extend through the slots 52.
A projection 58 is provided on section 42 of the display member.
With the sections of the carton in the relative position shown in Fig. 5, the projection 58 of the display member is grasped to move the said-- member outwardly. The tabs of the sections of;
the display member traverse the slots and the tabs bringing up against the ends 50 and 50' of the slots limit outward movement of the display member relative to the carton sections.
Stops 54 and 56 are formed in the walls 2 and 4 which may be pressed outwardly so as to underlie inner edges of the sections of the display member to hold said member against inward movements, see Fig. 4.
The front walls 2 and 4 of the carton sections are cut away as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 to expose the contents of the sections and the display member may, of course, carry any display matter desired.
In the position of the sections as shown in Fig. 5, objects are displayed at opposite sides of the device.
As one special feature of the invention, the members 34 and 36 are provided with struts 62 which are swingable on lines 64, see Fig. 1. These members 62 are swung upwardly to the position of Fig. 5 so that opposite ends thereof abut adjacent inner walls of the sections to reinforce the sections and provide rigidity when the sections arein the form of an A, as shown.
As another feature of the invention, the wall 2 may be provided with a slot 65 and a tab 68. The member 24 is provided with a cut-out H1 in which the tab 68 is receivable. The member 24' is slipped inwardly of wall member 2, and through slot 66 so that tab 68 is received in cutout 10. This holds member 24 against wall 2 so that it does not interfere with articles from resting on the member'ZZ.
One or more portions it may be removed from the carton on perforated lines '12, see Fig. 2. These facilitate the removal of the contents from the carton.
It will be observed that the carton may be shipped in flattened condition thereby to occupy but small space. When set-up in tubular form, the sections are readily filled and the filled sections may be superposed and inserted in a holder for shipment while when the goods are to be displayed the sections may be positioned as in Fig. 5 and the display member projected upwardly therefrom.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A two section carton construction comprising in combination, a single sheet of material formed to have inner walls which are hinged together for relative swinging movements, front and side Walls secured to said inner walls and cooperating therewith to provide tubular carton sections, end members secured to outer ends of the Walls forming the tubular sections closing outer ends thereof, and providing receptacle sections having adjacent open ends, said sections being relatively swingable adjacent open ends thereof between coplanar, and superposed positions, a display member hinged intermediate opposite ends thereof and having end portions slid- 4 I able in said carton sections between a position therein and an extended position, means limiting sliding movements of said portions of the display member including spaced longitudinal slots provided in corresponding walls of said carton sections and tabs on said portions of the display member slidable therein.
2. A two section carton construction comprising in combination, a single sheet of material formed to have inner walls for separate sections having inner ends hinged for relative swinging movements, outer Walls and side walls secured to said inner walls forming therewith separate tubular carton sections which are relatively swingable between coplanar, superposed and angular positions, means carried by one of said sections engageable with the other section for holding the sections in angular position, and a display section hinged-intermediate its ends having end portions in each of said carton sections, said means including transversely spaced longitudinal slots in corresponding walls of said sections and tabs provided on said portionsof the display member slidable in said slots.
3. A two section carton construction comprising in combination, a single sheet of material formed to have inner walls hinged together for relative swinging movements, front and side walls securedto and cooperating with said inner walls to provide tubular carton sections, end members secured to outer ends of said walls forming the tubular sections and closing outer ends thereof and providing receptacle sections having adjacent open ends, said sections being relatively swingable adjacent open ends thereof between coplanar and superposed and annular positions, a display member hinged intermediate-[opposite ends thereof and having end portions slidable in said carton sections between a position therein and an extended position, means limiting sliding movements of the end portions of said display member including spaced longitudinal slots provided in corresponding walls of said carton sections and tabs on the end portions of said display member slidable therein.
4.. A two section carton construction comprising in combination, a single sheet of material and a display section hinged intermediate its ends having end portions in each of said cartonsections, said means including transversely spaced longitudinal slots in corresponding walls of said sections and tabs provided on the end portions of said display member slidable in said slots.
