(on 12s-E11) ,ig-,1 This invention relates to a tool-setting block, and more particularly to a setting block for use in setting a tool of an internal grinding machine. An object of the invention is the provision of a tool-setting block whereby the diamonds can be set at a predetermined distance from a grinding rock of an internal grinding machine, thereby eliminating the old trial-and-error method.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which the point of the cutting tool can beaccurately adjusted to be fed into a grinding rock of an internal grinding machine with precision in order to save the time of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool-setting block that is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages Will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan View of the setting block in position on the grinding machine, according to the present invention;

Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevational View of the setting block;
Figure 4 is an enlarged end view of the setting block.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral IG designates a conventional internal grinding machine provided with a bed and diamond table II and adjustable holder I2 for releasably holding diamond-cutting bits on tools I3. The grinding machine Iii further includes rotatable grinding rocks 9, which are used for internal grinding operations, a chuck I4, and a movable inner barrel or spindle I5 provided with a longitudinally-extending threaded socket I6 and a shoulder 8 extending inwardly from a face thereof.
For accurately setting the tools I3 at a predetermined distance, a setting block I'I is provided. The setting block I'I embodies an interengaging means on one end for connecting the setting block I'I to the barrel I5 of the machine. The inter-engaging means comprises a shaft I3 threaded exteriorly, as at I9, for a portion of its length for engagement with the socket I6 of the barrel I5. Formed integrally With the shaft I8 is an annular ange 20 adapted to be seated in the shoulder 8l when the setting block I1 is inserted in the barrel. Formed integrally with the "interengaging means and having one end secured'to a face ofthe shaft I Sis a body 2|. Positionedcontiguous to the other end of the `body 2l` and 'secured thereto is a pair of sections 22 and 23 arranged in superposed relation with respect to each other. The section 22 is provided with a pair of arcuately-shaped tool-engaging faces 24, and the section 23 is provided with a pair of arcuately-shaped tool-engaging faces 26 for a purpose to be subsequently described.
The body 2I and sections 22 and 23 are provided with a pair of opposed, longitudinally-extending, cut-out portions 28 and 29, thereby effecting a reduction in the weight of vthe setting block I'I.
In use, the centering block (not shown) is removed from the inner barrel I5 of the machine- I0, and the setting block I'I is threaded therein., The setting block I1 is of a size such that afterit is threaded all of the way into the barrel I5 andi the inner barrel I5 moved longitudinally, the setting block I'I will be positioned in alignment withi.
the diamond-cutting tools I3. Next, the diamondcutting or boring tools I3 are adjusted in ther holder I2 so that the tips of the tools I3 contact. the complemental faces 24 and 25 of the sections. 22 and 23, and the tools I3 are then tightened in place in the holder I2. After the tools I3 are adjusted and tightened in their adjusted positions, the setting block II is removed from the inner barrel I5 of the machine I0. The grinding rocks 9 are now ready to be dressed to size by means of the diamond-cutting tools I3 as soon as the grinding rocks 3 are placed in the machine I0. The diameters of the sections 22 and 23 are the same size as the internal bores in a Work piece that are to be ground by the grinding rocks 9.
The grinding machine ID includes the table II and the adjustable holder i2 for detaehably or releasably holding cutting tools I3. The machine IU is further provided with rotatable grinding rocks 9 which are adapted to be rotated by any suitable power mechanism, the rocks 9 serving to be used for various internal grinding jobs. There is provided on the machine Il! a chuck I4 which has a barrel I5 connected thereto, the barrel I5 having a threaded socket I6 and being provided with a shoulder 8. To set the tools I3 at a predetermined distance, the setting block I'I is threaded into the socket I6 of the barrel I5. The tools I3 are then adjusted until the tips of the tools I3 contact the corresponding faces of the setting block l1 and then the tools are tightened in their proper place. Then, the setting block I1 is removed and the tools I3 can be used to dress the rocks 9 to their proper sizes prior to the use of the rocks 9 for grinding internal Work pieces.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided a new construction. It is, of course, to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims. -Y

In a grinding machine, a bed havingra'rotatably mounted spindle thereo`n-thereV being a threaded socket concentric of and in said spindle, a holder mounted on the bed, diamond bits adjustably mounted in said holder, a setting block comprising a shaft provided with a threaded exterior for a portion of its length andengaging the socket in said spindle, a body secured to said shaft, and a pair of sections arranged in superposed relation with respect to each other and secured to said body, one of said sections havasados? by said flange.
