UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. BOPP, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BEER-oooLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patient No. 255,575, dated March 28, 1882.
Application filed August 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BOPP, of Boston, in the county of Sutt'olk and State'of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Beer-Coolers, of which lie following is a full, clear, and exact descripion.
This invention relates to a cooler especially intended for use in the drawing of beer, 85o. Thls cooler is composed of a coil of pipe arranged within a tank in which iceis to be placed, and at` the one end connected to a keg or other supply of beer, Svc., and at the other end to a faucet, and between these two connections constructed with apertures, each of which opens into the chamber of the pipe, and have screwplugs for closing them, and allin such manner that with a removal ot said plugs the pipe is opened to be cleaned in lines which run in the direction ofthe pipe, and are continuous from end to end, and at each end open for the escape ot'.the material removed from the pipe in cleaning it, and with an insertion of said plug acontinuous passage will be left through the pip?l between its two ends, connected as aforesau .Theiniproveinentscoustitutingmyinvention will be tirst fully described in detail, and afterward pointed out specically in the claim.
-In theaccompanying plate of drawings, Figure l 1s a horizontal section of an ice-tank, showing a coil of pipe for the passage of beer, Src., in accordance with this invention Fig. 2, a vertical section, line 2 2, Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, on line 3 3, Fig. 2, through only the coillot pipes in part.
ln the drawings, Arepresents a tank or box of any suitable construction for holding icc for cooling purposes, in connection with a coil, B, of pipe. This coil B of pipe is at the bottom ot' the tank A, and is there arranged in ahorizontal plane, and at the one end, a., it is connected to a keg ot beer, Snc, and at the other end, b, to a faucet, all as usual. This coil B of pipe, as shown, is composed ot' two longitudi nal lengths, d, ot' pipe running along the sides ofthe box, and ot' parallel transverse lengths fof pipe. which intersect the parallel lengths d at various points in their length and open into the same.
g represents apertures in each longitudinal length d, and each in line with the transverse lengths f; h, a screw-plug closing cach aperture g, and by its part Z entering into and across the line ot' the longitudinal lengths d. Each plug at its part l has a passage, m, in it of a direction to secure, when the plugs areinserted, as shown, through several lengths of pipe, a continuous channel from end to end (see Fig. 3lthat is, from the keg to the fau cet-for the passage of beer, Src. The ends n of the longitudinal lengths d ot' pipes not connected with either the keg or faucet are opened and closed by screw plugs or caps o, which screw in or on to the same.
The several plugs h and o obviously are capable of removal, andas arranged in connection with the lengths ot pipe the pipes are then opened in lines from end to end, and thus placed in condition for their easy cleaning and for the escape ofthe material which is removed from the internal surface ofthe pipe in so cleaning.
The plugs h canbe of any other form at their part l than as described-as, for instance, as shown in Fig. 4, which shows a plug h with a portion ot` the coil of pipe in detail sections, the plug being cut away, as at s, in lieu ofthe passage m-this invention not being limited to any particular construction ofthe part lof the plug so long as in such construction the beer will be caused to dow through the coil of pipe in a continuous line, as indicated, and is desired for a thorough cooling ot' the beer, &c..
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
is t
1n a beer-cooler, the combination oftwo longitudinal pipes, a series of transverse pipes intersecting the longitudinal pipes at points b etween the ends ot' the latter, and a series ofremovable plugs extending transversely through the longitudinal pipes at points opposite the ends of the' transverse pipes, and constructed to direct the flow of beer from the longitudinal into the transverse pipes, all substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
1n testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. BOPP.
