UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE FLUSH HEAD sonnw on THE LIKE" Michael Lasky, Cleveland, Ohio Application April 22, 1947, Serial No. 743,045
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a, screw, or thelike, although its use is not restricted to any particular type of screw, bolt or the like. The general purpose of the invention is to enable the following objects to be accomplished in a particularly eflicient manner and by means of a construction which is simple and economical of production.
One object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character referred to wherein a centrally located member within the screw head is contoured in conjunction with the surrounding surface of the screw, simulating the appearance of a smooth surfaced screw, thereby eliminating any conspicuous depressions, slots or grooves, or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character referred to wherein a centrally located member within the screw head and contoured to the surrounding surface of said screw head, is co-ordinated with flexible means within a sided depression of said screw head, to respond to an exerted force applied upon said centrally located member to receive a wrench, or the like, to permit proper manipulation in positioning said screw.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character referred to wherein the centrally located member is self-contained and firmly embedded within a depression provided at one extremity of the screw, thereby eliminating the utilization of separate plugs or fillers, in an effort to conceal a depression, slot or groove, as ordinarily is the case when the present type of screws are utilized, and the depressions are concealed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character referred to wherein the centrally located member combines enhancing the appearance of the screw, with the incorporated feature of immediate removal, said removal executed by compressing the centrally located member within the screw head, utilizing a wrench or the like, and rotatably operating said wrench in conjunction with the type of threads that are provided on said screw.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a typical screw, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2--2 in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 with the exception of the depressed centrally located member illustrating the position of the extensible plug in the process of manipulation. Fig. 4 indicates the plan view as shown along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a variation of the 2 i plan view. Fig. 6 is a variation of a screw head. Fig. 7 is a variation of a screw head. Fig. .8 illustrates a form of nut in which the invention maybe used.
Number I is the stem of a bolt or the like, having a head 2. Within the head 2 is a noncircular recess 3 into which is permanently located the housing 4. Said housing 4 is flanged at 5 and extends over and beyond the flange 1 of the closure cap 8 thus permitting the closure cap 8 to have a slidable fit between the said flange 5 and the circumferential stem section H) of the closure cap 8.
The convex portion 6 provides the spring H with a locating point and prevents the spring H from dislocation when said spring II is under stresses of compression and extension. The upper end of the spring ll rests within the bore 9 of the stem Ill.
, The cap 8 has a non-circular flanged head l2 communicating with the recess 3 in a slidable fit and the external surface of said head is contoured to conform to the surrounding surface of the screw head 2.
The external dimensions of the housing 4 are slightly larger than the dimensions of recess 3 so that the closure assembly is retained in the recess by a press-fit between housing 4 and recess 3.
In Fig. 3 the screw is shown in the process of positioning. Pressure is applied to the wrench l4 against the depressible plug 8 thus compressing the spring I l and permitting suflicient grip within the sided recess 3 to rotate the screw l by rotation of the wrench l4.
In Fig. 5 the hexagon plug is a variation.
In Fig. 6 is shown a button head screw l5; the location and the contour of the plug [6 is indicated.
In Fig. 7 is shown a flat head screw H; the location and the contour of the plug [8 is indicated.
In Fig. 8 is shown a nut I9; the location of the plug 20 is indicated. The nut is threaded at 2| at one end.
Although several forms of the invention have been shown and described in detail, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention is not so limited, but the various deviations may be incorporated without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
An improvement for a threaded fastener having a screw threaded portion and a turning portion having a non-circular turning recess formed therein, said improvement consisting of an independently assembled recess closure unit comprising a cup-like housing having the same peripheral outline as said turning recess and a laterally inwardly extending flange at the open end thereof, a closure cap having a stem, an enlarged non-circular head portion at one end of said stem and a flange extending laterally from said stem, at the other: end thereof; the stem of the closure cap being movably telescoped' with said housing with the flange on said closure cap underlying separation of said parts, a resilient; membermounted within the confines of said telescoping housing and closure cap, being under compression thereby; normally maintaining said telescoping parts in extended relationship with said flanges in interlocking engage-- ment, said housing having external dimensions slightly-larger thanvthezdimensionsiof said: recess whereby the housing may be held in said recess, by,- a' pressa-fit saidhead: portion on the closure cap having the same non-circular periphery as the flange on said housing to prevent said resilient member said recess and being slightly smaller in dimensions so as to have a close sliding fit with said recess, and the dimensions of the cap, stem, housing and recess being such that when the cap is in its normal extended position the exterior of said head will be flush with said turning portion of the fastener.
