Description

y 1951 E. P. ZIMMERLY I 2,554,608
CLOTHES LIFTER Filed April 1'7, 1950 Edward P; Z/mmer/y INVENTOR.
Patented May 29, 1951 OFFICE CLOTHES LIFTER Edward P. Zimmerly, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Estelle Anne Zimmerly, Chicago, 111.
Application April 17, 1950, Serial No. 156,306
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes lifting devices and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a stick for stirring, turning and lifting clothes in a convenient manner without the user having to handle the clothes or contact hot water in which the clothes are being soaked or washed.
Another very important object of the present invention is to provide a clothes lifter including a tip so constructed and shaped as to permit the tip to effectively grip a garment as the tip is rotated by a user.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a clothes lifting stick that is extremely strong and reliable in use to permit the lifting of relatively heavy and wet clothes and with the stick of sufficient length to provide the necessary leverage action.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a clothes lifter that is simple and practical in construction, easy to handle, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to lik parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the present clothes lifter;
Figure 2 is an enlarged end view of the present clothes lifter; and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral represents an elongated cylindrical shank or stick having a tapered end portion l2 that is integrally formed with a substantially semi-spherical knob or tip l4 whose radius is substantially equal to the radius of the stick III.
The outer periphery of the tip 14 is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced grooves or channels [6 that are inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the stick H). The grooves l6 each include an inner end I8 and an outer end 20. The grooves diminish in depth and In practical use of the lifter, the user grasping the stick it! merely inserts the tip I4 into a garment and twists the stick so that the garment will be wrapped about the tip with portions of the garment received in the grooves [6. As the stick is raised, the garment will remain on the stick until the stick is again twisted or rotated.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described as preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A clothes lifting device comprising an elongated cylindrical stick having a tapered end, a substantially semi-spherical tip on said tapered end, said tip having a plurality of circumferentially spaced grooves therein, said grooves being inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of said stick and including inner and outer ends, the width of said grooves diminishing from the inner ends of said grooves toward the outer ends of said grooves.
EDWARD P. ZIMMERLY.
