1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a utensil which forms an all purpose combined can, bottle and jar opener, and has for its principal object the provision of a neat and highly efficient tool which can be used either for removing the ends from tin cans, and or for removing the caps from glass bottles and jars.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved combined can and bottle opener;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side View, illustrating the opposite side of the device;
Fig. 4 illustrates the improved combined can and bottle opener as it would appear in use, opening an ordinary can; and
Fig. 5 is a similar view, illustrating the tool in use, removing a screw cap from a bottle.
The invention employs two plier-like handles, designated on the drawing as a first handle I and a second handle I I. Both handles are angle shaped in cross-section so as to provide two, flat, gripping flanges I2. The inner faces of the gripping flanges I2 are indented to form a plurality of relatively sharp teeth I3. The flange I2 of the handle I0 is notched, as indicated at 22, to form a bottle cap remover.
A blade arm I4 is pivotally mounted on a pivot pin I extending through the handle I0. One extremity of the blade arm I4 carries a hinge pin I6, upon which the handle I I is hingedly mounted adjacent the forward extremity of the latter. The latter extremity carries a stop pin I'I which travels in a slotted opening I8 in the handle I0.
A turn handle I9 is rotatably mounted on one extremity of the handle I0 and extends therethrough to support a can gripping wheel on the opposite side thereof. The blade arm I4 extends around the lower edge of the handle I0 and terminates in a can-cutting knife 2| which is positioned alongside the gripping wheel 20.
To open a can, such as indicated at 23, with the device, the two handles I0 and II are swung apart. This causes the blade arm I4 to rotate about the pivot pin I5, the stop pin I'I traveling in the slotted opening I8. This separates the cutting knife 2I from the gripping Wheel 20 and allows the edge bead of the can to be slipped between the two. The two handles I0 and II are then squeezed together to force the knife 2l into 2 the can by rotation of the blade arm I4 on its pivot I5. The turn handle I9 is then rotated to cause the gripping wheel 20 to carry the can around against the knife 2l so as to separate the top therefrom.
For removing the small caps from the bottles of beverages and the like, the notch 22 is used. The cap is inserted into the notch 22, and the latter is provided with a hook 24 which engages under the cap to lift it from the bottle.
For removing metal screw caps, such as indicated at 25, from jars, such as indicated at 26, the device is reversed so that the two handles I0 and I I will rest upon the cap 25, with the flanges I2 positioned on opposite sides of the cap. The handles are squeezed together to cause the teeth I3 to engage the sides of the cap and the latter is rotated from position.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
A utensil for opening cans, comprising: a rst handle; a blade arm extending across one extremity of the first handle; a pivot member mounting said blade arm on said handle; a bent extremity on said blade arm extending to the opposite side of the first handle; a cutting knife on said bent extremity; a hand rotatable member extending through said handle adjacent said cutting knife; a can gripping wheel on said hand rotatable member; a second handle hingedly mounted on the other extremity of said blade arm and extending rearwardly alongside said flrst handle and forwardly from said blade arm; and a stop pin in the forward extremity of said second handle riding in a slotted opening in said first handle to limit the relative movement therebetween.
