The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in baskets for carrying bottles or other articles and more particularly to a knockdown basket.

An important object of the invention is to provide a knockdown basket including a U- shaped bottom, a sectional rectangular shaped band forming the walls of the basket having interlocking engagement with the bottom, and a handle having interlocking engagement with both the bottom and wall forming band.

A further object is to construct the parts of the basket for convenient storing and shipping in nested form.

Another object is to provide a knockdown has ket wherein the several parts may be assembled without the use of tools.

A still further object is to provide a metal basket of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view;

Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View taken substantially on a line 33 of Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on a line 44 of Figure 2;

Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the handle;

Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the sectional band, and;

Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the bottom.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a U-shaped basket bottom to provide upstanding end walls 6 having a horizontal channel I on the outerside and adjacent the top of each end wall. The upper edge of the end wall, above the channel 1, is bent downwardly on the outerside thereof to form an inverted channel 8.

A sectional substantially rectangular shaped band 9 composed of a pair of opposed U-shaped member [0 and l I have their end portions l2 seated in the channels I with their upper edges seated in the channels 8. Angular inwardly extending locking tongues 13 are struck from the inner surfaces of the end portions I2 of each of the members Iii and H to engage the edges of the end walls 6 at the ends of channels 1.

A vertical slot it i formed in each channel I and the ends of members l0 and I! meet in the slots and are formed with looking lugs [5 of semispherical shape on the inner surfaces of said members to ride past an adjacent edge of the slot to lock the rnemberslfl and H in channels l. The contacting edges of slot 14 engaged by ugs it are pressed in an opposite direction to tlso form semi-spherical locking lugs l6 coacting with the lugs 15.

lhe outer surface of channel I is formed with an upstanding tongue l9 struck therefrom and the outer edge of channel 8 is formed with a downwardly extending tongue 20 bendable respectively in a notch 26 in the lower edge of end portions l2 and an opening 22 in the upper portion thereof to hold the end portions I2 of members if and l I in channels I.

23 and 24 to slidably receive the ends of an inverted U-shaped handle 25 of strap metal, the outer wall of channel 8 being pressed outwardly to form a guide loop 26 to accommodate the handle for positioning outwardly of the end portions 12 of members l0 and H at the meeting edges thereof.

The lower ends of handle 25 are formed with inwardly bent tongues 2'! to prevent removal of the handle 25 upwardly from

23 and 24.

The bottom 5 is formed with reinforcing ribs 28 and may also be formed with a reinforcing beading 29 at its side edges.

The locking tongues ll, 19 and 20 provide additional locking means for the ends l2 of members l0 and H where a permanent locking construction is desired for holding the parts of the basket in assembled relation, and only semispherical locking lugs l5 and 16 are used where a quick knock-down construction is preferred.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the de- 3 vice will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A collapsible basket comprising a U-shaped bottom having upstanding end walls, said end walls having upper portions and channels in said upper portions, a band forming the rim of; the basket and having ends received in said channels, and means detachably connecting theband to the end walls, said channels having lower leg portions and said band having a lower edge seated on the lower leg portions of said channels.

2. A. collapsible basket comprising a u-shaped bottom having upstanding end walls, a band forming the rim of the basket, said band ircluding a pair of opposed U-shaped sections, interlocking means between the ends of the sections of the band and the upstanding end walls for detachably connecting the band thereto, saia band having a lower edge and notches provided in the lower edge, and upstanding tongues struck from said end walls received in said notches.

A collapsible basket comprising a U-shaped bottom having upstanding ends forming a pair of opposed walls. for a basket, said end walls having upper portions and external horizontal channels provided in said upper portions, and a band detachably secured in said channels, said channels having lower leg portions and said band having a lower edge supported on the lower leg portions or" said channels.

A collapsible basket comprising a U-shaped bottom having upstanding ends forming a pair of opposed walls for a basket, said end walls having external horizontal channels, a band seated in said channels, and means detachably holdingthe band therein said means comprising upstanding tongues struck from the webs of said channels, and notches provided in said band receiving said tongues.

A collapsible basket comprising a U-shaped bottom having upstanding ends forming a pair 1 of; opposed walls for a basket, said end walls having external hprizontal channels, a band seated in said channels interlocking fastening means between the band and the end walis, said interlocking means including interfitting tongues and recesses, and retaining means carried by said channels, retaining the band seated in said channels.

A collapsible basket comprising; a U-shaped bottom having upstanding ends forming a pair of opposedwalls, said walls having external-horizontal channels, said channels having upper leg portions, retaining flanges depending from the upper leg portions of said channels and spaced from the webs of said channels, a sectional band having end portions seated in the channels and with the upper edge of the band engaged between the webs of said channels and said flanges, said channels having vertically alined openings, and a handle anchored in-said openings outwardly of the band to hold the band in the channels.

7. A collapsible basket comprising a U-shaped bottom having upstanding ends forming a pair of opposed walls, said walls having external horizontal channels, said channels having upper leg portions, retaining flanges depending from "the upper leg; portions of said channels and spaced from the webs of said channels, a sectional band having end portions seated in the channels and with the upper edge of the band engaged between said retaining flanges and the webs. of said channels, said channels having vertically alined' openings, and a handle having its ends slidably anchored in said openings for vertical raising and lowering movement, said handle being positioned outwardly of the band.

8. A collapsible basket comprising a U-shaped bottom having upstanding ends forming a pair of opposed walls, said walls having external horizontal channels, said channels having upper leg portions, retaining flanges depending from the upper leg portions of said channels and spaced from the webs of said channels, a sectional band having end portions seated in the channels, and with the upper edge of the band engaged between said retaining flanges and the webs of said chan neis, said channels having vertically alined. openings, a handle anchored in said openings, and locking tongues for the band. carried by said opposed walls at the upper and lower edges of said first channel.

9. A collapsible basket comprising a U-shaped bottom. having upstanding ends forming a pair of end walls, said walls having external horizontal' channels, a pair of U-shaped side members navingtheir ends seated, in said channels to form a rim for the basket, said channels having: openings, and locking tongues at the ends of said side members received in said openings and engaged; behind the end walls.
