MICHAEL TRUBY, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
ALARM AND DOOR-BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,356, dated March 21, 1882.
Application filed December 9, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL TaUBY, a citizen of the United States, residing atElkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Alarm and Door-Bell, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined alarm and door-bell so constructed and arranged that it may be usedeither as an alarm or doorbell, or both, or the bell detached and used as an ordinary pull-bell.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a striking device for alarm and doorbells, in which a continuous wire-spring carries at one end the striker and at the other a snap-catch which engages with a slide-piece also on' said spring, the whole being substantially one and the same piece; and, second, to
improve upon the combined alarm and door-' bell for which Letters Patent bearing the date April 12, 1881, and numbered 240,203, have been granted to me. I attain these objects by mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my combined alarm and door-bell,with the gongshown in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the gong and door-knob removed; Figs. 3 and 4, views illustrating the operation of striking the bell; and Fig. 5, a detailed view, showing the arrangement of the clip or thumb- ]ever by which the bell may be operated as a door-bell.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of a door, E is a plate secured to said door by screws 0 e, and provided with studs H H, and a screw-post, F, onto which a gong or sounder, G, is screwed. Around the studs H and H, and held by pins h and h, are coils n and n of a continuous spring, S, which is provided at one end with a snap-catch, N, and loop f at the other, with a striker, D, and between said striker and coil n with a slide-piece, O, with which the snap-catch N engages. B is an ordinary door-latch; O, the knobor handle thereof, the square shank M of which passes through a corresponding hole in the end of an arm, L, which is provided at its other end with a stud, a, over which aloop, d,
in the end of a wire, I), is hooked in such a manner that it may be readily detached. To this wire b is attached a second wire, 0, which passes through the staple R, and is secured in the loopf of the continuous spring S. An ordinary bell-clip, J, is secured to the opposite side of the door, the thumb-lever I of which passes through the door and projects through the slot 2' in the plate E, directly behind the continuous spring S, at a point near the loop f.
The operation is as follows: Upon opening the door,.by turning the handle 0 of the latch B the snap-catch N is drawn forward by means of the wires 0 and b and arm L, bringing the striker D back, as shown in Fig. 3, and tightening the coils n and a until the snap-catch N slips from the end of the slidepiece 0 and releases the striker D, which, impelled by the recoil from coil or. of spring S,
flies against the gong, as shown in Fig. 4,-
and gives the alarm. The part s of the spring S, striking against the stop P, prevents the striker from going too far. Upon releasing the handle 0 the recoil from coil it brings the snap-catch N back to its original position, where it again engages with the slide-piece O, the end of the catch and side of the slidepiece being beveled to facilitate said engagement.
By detaching the wire I) from stud a the latch B may be operated without ringing the bell.
The bell is rung from the clip J in the ordinary manner. The thumb-lever I, striking the spring S draws snap catch N forward and rings the bell in the manner before described.
2. In an alarm or door-bell, the combination continuous spring, S, having striker D, coils of a continuous spring, S, having striker D, n and n, loop f, snap-catch N, and slide 0, coils n and n, snap-catch N, and slide 0, with substantially as shown and set forth.
a plate, E, having studs H 11, substantially MICHAEL TRUBY. 5 as shown and described. Witnesses:
3. The combination of a plate, E, studs H WM. H. BERKEY, H, screw-post F, gong G, and stop P with a E. S. HOREY.
