GATE.
No. 255.267. Patented Mar. 21,1882

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES FERGUSON, OF LAKE TOWNSHIP, MERCER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,267, dated March 21, 1882.
Application filed July 26,1850. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES FERGUSON, of
Lake township, inthe county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which thetollowing is a specification, reference being bad to the drawing hereto annexed, which represents a perspective view of my improved gate.
My invention relates to a vertically-adjustable swinging gate, the construction and operation ofwhich will be hereinafter fullydescribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing hereto annexed, Arepresents the gate-post, and B a vertical rod secured thereto by means of eyebolts 1.
O is the gate, which consists of a series of parallel horizontal bars, Q, connected by end braces, R, and by a central vertical brace, S. The said gate is hinged by means of staples or eyebolts T upon the rod B, which, extending to the upper end of the main gate'post, permits the gate to be lifted vertically by mechanism to be hereinafter described.
, D is a lever swiveled to the top of the main gate-post A, and having its inner end connected by a link or rod, E, with the upper end of the central gate-brace, S, so that the gate shall be evenly balanced upon said togglejoint. 7 The outer end of the lever D carries a weight, G, nearly balancing the weight of the gate.
It will be observed that the inner end of the lever D extends far enough to permit the link or rod E to' be in a vertical position, which causes the gate to be evenly balanced, and thus obviate any binding of the hinges thereof in the vertical movement of the gate.
hinge when the gate is lifted, thus making the operation more easy and the strain and wear less.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein-described combination and arrangement of the gate-post A, having vertical rod B, the gate G, swinging and vertically adjustable upon said rod, and having central verticalbraee,S,and theleverD,swiveled to thetop of post A, and having its outer end weighted and its inner end extending over the center of the gate, and connected thereto by a link or rod, E, upon which said gate is evenly balanced, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES FERGUSON. [L.
