Description

M y 1951 J. A. TALBOT 5 L PIVOTED LEVER BOTTLE CAP REMOVER Filed Oct. 16, 1947 Jaseph A. Tamar I m eulor Patented May 1, 1 951 PIVOTED LEVER BOTTLE CAP REMOVER Joseph A. Talbot, New Britain, Conn., assignor of one-half to Arthur Talbot, New Britain, Conn.
Application October 16, 1947, Serial No. 780,149
4 Claims. (arm-3.46)
' This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle cap removers and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a bottle cap remover including novel and improved means for engaging the neck of a bottle and for receiving the upper and lower edge of a bottle cap in a convenient position without slipping during the operation of removing the cap.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a plier-like bottle opener including a movable jaw and a fixed handle, and novel and improved means for normally retaining the jaw against the handle to facilitate the application of the opener to a bottle in a quick and precise manner.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a bottle cap remover so designed as to remove a cap without bending the same so that the cap may be reused if desirable.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a bottle cap remover that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a conventional bottle and cap and showing the present bottle cap remover in position for removing the cap from the bottle;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the movable lever or handle used in conjunction with the present cap remover;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the present bottle cap remover, and showing the pivotal handle removed therefrom;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the pivotal connecting means for connecting the fixed handle to the movable handle;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the spring means used in conjunction with the present invention;
Figure 6 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line fi-5 of Figure 3;
Figure 7 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional View taken substantially on the plane of section line I-'! of Figure l; and
Figure 8 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 8-8 of Figure 1. 7
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Ill represents a preferably metallic handle having an arcuate central portion l2, a flared rear end portion I4 and a preferably straight, flat forward end portion It. Integrally formed with the forward end portion 16 is an upwardly inclined yoke l8 that embraces the neck 20 of a bottle 22 adjacent the enlarged mouth 24 of the bottle. The outer ends of the yoke 18- are integrally formed with a substantially U-shaped gripping member 26, which is also inclined to the longitudinal axis of the handle [0 and which is provided with an enlarged web portion 28 having a seat 30 that engages the flange 32 of a bottle cap 34, with one side 36 of the seat engaging the lower edge 38 of the cap and with a lip 40 at the opposite side of the seat that bears upon or engages the upper edge 42 of the cap.
Preferably integrally formed with the handle ill at opposite sides of its central portion I2, is a pair of spaced parallel ears or fulcrums 44 that support a pivot pin 46. This pivot pin 46 pivotally engages a lug or enlargement 48 depending from a movable handle or lever 50. This lever 50 is provided with a central arcuate portion 52 and a flared rear portion 54 that oppose the central portion l2 and flared end portion M of the fixed handle ID. The forward end 56 of this lever 5| terminates in an upwardly curved beveled jaw 58 having an arcuate bearing edge 60 that conforms to the periphery of the bottle neck 24, so that the jaw will be positioned beneath the lower edge 38 of the cap 34 opposite from the seat 30.
The numeral 62 represents a substantially U- shaped sprin that is interposed between the arcuate central portion of the lever and the fixed handle. The ends 64 of this spring 62 are fixedly secured to the central arcuate portions l2 and 52, to normally retain the jaw 58 bearing upon the yoke 18, so that the yoke and gripping member 26 may conveniently engage the bottle and cap. By then pressing downwardly upon the lever 50, the jaw 58 will pivot upwardly against the lower edge 38 of the cap 34 to remove the same from the bottle neck.
Obviously, the jaw may be actuated to only loosen the cap, whereby the fixed handle may be rotated slightly in a horizontal plane and the jaw again actuated to further loosen the cap. In this manner, the cap may be removed without bending, so that it may .be re-used if desirable.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is here shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A bottle cap remover comprising a fixed handle, a neck embracing ring carried by said handle, means carried by said .neck embracing ring for receiving a portion of a cap, and a movable lever carried by said handle engaging the lower edge of a cap diametrically opposite from said cap receiving means.
2. -A bottle cap remover comprising a fixed handle, a neck embracing ring carried by said handle, an arcuate member carried by said ring having a seat for receiving the lower edge of a bottle cap, and means pivotally carried by said handle for engagement with a diametrically opposite lower edge of the bottle cap from said seat to cooperate with said member in removing the cap.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said last mentioned means includes a pivotal lever having an arcuate edge at one end for engagement with a diametrically opposite lower edge of a bottle cap from said seat to cooperate with said membeer in removing the cap.
4. A bottle cap remover comprising a fixed handle, a neck embracing ring at one end of said handle, a channel shaped member fixedly carried by said ring and having a seat carried for receiving the upper edge and lower edge of a cap, a lever pivotally carried by said handle, a movable jaw rigidly carried by said lever at one end and having an arcuate edge for engagement with a diametrically opposite lower edge of a bottle cap from said seat, and means normally retaining said arcuate edge bearing upon said ring.
