UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAROY S. STARRETT, OF ATHOL, MASSACHUSETTS.
SURFACE-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,123, dated March 21, 1882.
Application filed November 21, 188i. (No model.) I
To au whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LARoY S. STARRETT, of Athol, of the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Surface-Gages; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a gage embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is a' vsection of it, taken lengthwise through the pointer, swivel, screw, and clamp, Figs. 5 and 6 being hereinafter explained.
The nature of my invention orimprovement is defined in the following claims.
In the drawings, A denotes a cylindrical standard, having a screw, a, cut on it at its lower end to receive a nut, B, arranged as represented within the recess or notch b, as shown,in a stand, C. This stand has a circular base, c, within which is a right-angular notch,d, all being as represented. The stand-` ard A extends vertically through the stand, and is grooved longitudinally from top to bottom, as shown at c in side view in Fig. 5, and in transverse section in Fig. 6, such groove c being to. receive the inner end of a screw, D, screwed into the upper part of the stand G. This groove and screw are to prevent the standard A from turning around in the stand while the nut B may be 'in revolution on the screw a. Kis a clamp-screw,for clamping the standard A in position.
A collar, E,is provided with a clamp-screw, F, screwed into it and entering the groove c. This clamp-screw not only serves to fix the collar at any desirable altitude on the standard, but with the groove prevents the collar'from turning on the standard. The collar is furnished with a cylindrical projection, f, whose axis is at right angles with that of the collar. The projection has a tapering bore, g, to receive a screw, G, whose shank is tapering, and with the spherical head is split lengthwise, the head being bored transversely to receive the pointer H, formed as represented. A nut, I, is screwed on the screw G and against one end of the projection f. On setting up the nut the screw G will not only be drawn tightly 1 into its tapering socket, and thereby be held from revolving, but the head will be contracted upon the pointer, so as to clamp it to the said head. f
The notch d in the base of the stand C is t0 admit ofthe pointer being extended down through the base. With a base as arranged and represented, with the standard, and provided with the said notch, abetter support for the standard on any dat surface can be obtained than when astand is made without such notch and to project in opposite ways unequal distances from the axis of the standard A.
By means ot' the nut B and screw a the accurate vertical adjustment of the pointer in altitude can be attained after an approximate adjustment of it may have been eiected by means ofthe collar E, clamp-screw F, screw G, and nut I.
I do not claim a surface-gage constructed as shown and described in the United States Patent No. 220,323.
What I claim as my invention or improvement is as follows, viz:
l. The sliding collar E, its bored projection f, clamp-screws F G, and nut I, in combination with the pointer H, arranged in the screw G, and also with the grooved standard A and the stand G, adjusting-nut B, and guide-screw' D, adapted to and arranged with each other as set forth.
2. The standard G, provided with'the notch d, arranged in its base, as set forth, in combination with the standard A, and with the pointer H, sliding collar E, bored projection f, clamp-screws F and G, and nut I, all arranged and adapted substantially as explained.
3. The sliding collar E, its tapering bored projection f, clampscrew F, split and tapering screw G, and its nut I, in combination with the pointer H, arranged in the said screw G, and with the standard A, extending through the said collar, all being substantially as set forth.
4. The cylindrical standard A,provided with the longitudinal groove c, adjusting-screw a, and nut B, in combination with the stand C and the guide D, and clamp-screw K, all being eftrranged and adapted substantially as set orth.
