Description
M y 1951 F. P. DAVIS 2,551,100 I TIMING DEVICE Filed'June 10, 1948 1 I}? flezvia INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented May 1, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TIMING DEVICE Frank P. Davis, Alexandria, Va.
Application June 10, 1948, Serial No. 32,185
2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in watches.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved watch construction having the usual dial indicia and minute and hour hands, plus the addition of a sweep second hand and an additional minute hand of contrasting color which will move one-twelfth the distance about the dial every minute the sweep second hand is in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved watch construction especially useful for airplane pilots who fly by instruments and require exact timing which may be started and stopped at any desired time, said mechanism being geared to be actuated by the regulation watch works.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved watch construction including the usual spring actuated works with dial and minute and hour hands, with the addition of a clutch controlled sweep second hand and additional minute hand geared so that every complete revolution about the dial made by the sweep hand will cause the additional minute hand to move one twelfth the distance about the dial, said additional hands being selectively started, set and started by the operation of said clutch mechanism.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination watch having minute and hour hands, and a stop watch mech anism including a sweep second hand and an additional contrasting minute hand, said watch being highly efficient in operation and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application:
Figure l is a front view of an improved watch made in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken through the watch works.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the starting, setting and stopping mechanism for the additional sweep second hand and additional minute hand.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is shown and provided an improved watch construction including a watch case I having a dial face 2 provided with indicia to show hours and minutes.
The watch is provided with the usual minute hand 3 and the hour hand 4 with gear train movement generally designated by the reference numeral 5 for operating the same, said hands 3 and 4 being rotatably mounted upon and supported by the shaft or arbor 6, the watch construction described so far being of usual arrangement.
An additional contrasting minute hand 1 is provided and its hub 8 is disposed within the hub 9 of the usual minute hand 3. The additional sweep second hand 10 is provided with a hub ll disposed within the hub 8 of the contrasting minute hand 1, said hubs 8 and H having gears l2 and I3 respectively formed thereon for meshing with the gears I4 and I5 driven by the gear I=6 of the gear train 5.
An actuating stem I1 is provided with a head cap l8, and is reciprocably mounted between the watch case I and the bearing 19. A bell crank lever 20 is pivoted at 2|, with one end being yoke clipped to the stem I! and its other end supporting the gear [6 which is constantly meshed with the gear 22. When the stem I1 is pushed inwardly, the gear I6 is engaged with the gear 22 of the gear train 5, thus driving the additional sweep second hand [0 and additional hand 1.
A bevel gear 24 is fixed to the stem l1 and is adapted to mesh with the bevel gear 25 on the shaft 26 driven by the gear train 5. The gear 22 on shaft 21 forming a part of the watch movement is connected through the shaft 21 with the gears 28 and 29 which mesh with the gears 30 and 3| respectively for operating the regular minute hand 3 and the hour hand 4. Thus, when the stem I1 is pulled out and the head cap I 8 is rotated, the additional sweep second hand I!) and the additional minute hand I will be turned back to 12 on the dial 2.
The watch case I is also provided with the usual winding cap 32 and stem 33.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
case, a dial face having indicia indicating hours and minutes with the minutes indicia arranged in groups of five, hour and minute hands operated by said spring movement, an additional substantially long distinctively colored minute hand and a sweep second hand, mounted concentrically with respect to said center spindle, a bell crank lever mounted within the case, a gear mounted on one end of said bell crank lever movable into mesh with the spring movement, rotating the additional minute hand the distance between minute indicia groups of five, showing one minute between indicia ordinarily indicated as five minutes, an
actuating stem extending into the watch case to which the bell crank lever is pivotally connected, whereby sliding movement of the actuating stem effects the movement of said additional minute hand and sweep second hand, into and out of operation.
2. A watch including a case, ,a spring movement including a center spindle, mounted within the case, a dial face having indicia indicating hours and minutes with {the minute indicia arranged in groups of five, hour and minute hands operated by said spring movement, an'additional indicating substantially long minute hand and sweep second hand, said minute hand being distinctively colored, said additional minute hand and second hand extending to points adjacent to the hour and minute indicia, a stem mounted for rotary and sliding movement within the case, a lever actuated by movement of said stem, and a gear mounted on said lever movable into and out of operative relation with respect to the spring movement, effecting operation of said additional minute hand and sweep second hand.
