- GARBAGE .CAN HOLDER Filed Sept. 14, 1949 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR.
1 Mrrz'nPNyaZrom ATTORNEKS Patented May 1, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Marvin Prey Nystrom, Salem, Oreg. Application September 14, 1949, Serial No. 115,674
1 Claim. (01. 248-147) This invention relates to garbage can holders. An object of this invention is to provide a holder for garbage cans which will permit easy placement or removal of the can from the base, the holder including a lid lifting lever or arm connected with a treadle so that the lid may be raised by depressing the treadle with a foot.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved holder which can be readily ad- J'usted for cans of various sizes, both as to height and diameter.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a holder of this kind an improved locking means for the lid whereby the lid may be locked in raised or open position.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a detail front elevation of a garbage can holder constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
v Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the holder.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates generally a base structure which is formed of a pair of L-shaped plates connected together by means of a pair of connecting bars I2 having nuts I3 and M threaded on each end thereof. An elongated channel member I5 is secured as by welding or the like, to the connecting bars l2 extending rearwardly and terminating at substantially the rear of the base l0.
An upstanding tubular guide member I6 is welded at its lower end to a plate I! which is fixed by fastening means I8 to the upper side of the channel member l5 at the rear of the latter.- An angle member or stop I9 is fixed by bolts or fastening members 26 to the plate l1, and preferably both the plate I! and the channel member l5 are formed with spaced openings 2| through" which the fastening member 20 may be extended so that the can C may be positioned at a predetermined distancefrom the guide member I6.
The guide member I6 has slidable therethrough a vertically disposed rod 22 which is pivotally connected at its lower end to a rock lever 23. The rock lever 23 is rockably mounted on a depending hanger or bracket 24 carried by the channel member l5, and the forward end of the lever 23 has a tread member 25 fixed thereto.
A depending strap 26 which is formed with a horizontally disposed upper base member 2'! is fixed by fastening means 28 to the channel member i5 and is provided with a vertically disposed elongated opening 29 within which the forward portion of the lever 23 is adapted to slidably engage.
The strap or keeper member 26 is formed with an offset keeper notch 30 adjacent the lower end of the slot 29 so that when the lever 23 is rocked downwardly this lever may be shifted laterally into the keeper notch 30 to thereby lock the lever 23 in its lid or cover elevating position. The rod 22 has secured to the upper end thereof a tubular bearing member 3|, having a nut 32 which is threaded onto the upper end of rod 22 so that bearing member 3| may be vertically adjusted to provide for the proper closing of lid L on the top of can 0. The bearing member 3| is formed with a slot 33 through which a lid lever 34 loosely extends, and the lever 34 is rockably mounted on a pivot member 35 which is extended through the bearing member 3|. The lever 34, as shown in Figure 2, is twisted at its forward end portion and the forward end of lever 34 is secured by fastening means 36 to the looped handle 31 which is carried by the lid L.
The lever 34 includes a rearward extension 38 which is engaged by the looped upper end 39 of a rod 40. The rod 40 extends loosely through a rearwardly extending bracket 4| which is fixed to the guide I6 adjacent the upper end of the guide, and a nut or stop member 42 is carried by the lower end of the rod 40 so as to limit the upward movement of this rod.
A spring 43 is fixed at its lower end to a hook 44 carried by the bracket 4| and is fixed at its upper end to the hook 45 which is carried by the nut 34. The spring 43 provides a return means for returning the lid L to a closed position and for constantly urging the lid operating rod 22 downwardly.
In the use and operation of this device, the stop member I9 is horizontally adjusted so that when the can 0 is engaged therewith the can will be disposed directly beneath the lid L when the latter is lowered by downward rocking of lever 34. The lid L is fixed by the fastening means 36 to the lever 34 and is constantly urged to a closed position by gravity and also the spring 43. The lever 23 will be disposed in the uppermost position when the lid L is closed, as shown in full lines in Figure 2. When it is desired to raise the lid L, the lever 23 is depressed at.its forward end by engagement of a foot with the pedal or by the stop member 42, after which the lid L will 5 be rocked upwardly from its forward side to substantially the dotted line position shown in Fi ure 2.
I do not mean to confinemyself to the exact details of construction herem disclosed, butrclaimmlo all variations falling within the purview of "the" appended claim.
What I claim is slidable through said guide, a lid lifting :.=leven:e:
pivotally secured betweenathe ends thereof to the 20 1,947,879
upper; iendvof said rod; a spring 1connected--be- :a tweengthe. upper portioniof said rod and-thezupper,
portion of said guide, a holding bar connected between said guide and the rear of said lever, an operating lever below said channel member, means engaging said operating lever between the ends thereof pivotally securing said lever to said channel member, and means pivotally connecting the rear end of said operating lever to the lower end of said rod.
