4 Claims.
This invention relates to storm windows and more particularly to storm windows including double hung sash positioned in amounting frame and including a vertically adjustable sill.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a storm sash assembly including a frame having a vertically adjustable sill and means for positioning said sill in said frame.
A further object of the invention is the provision of meansfor positioning a vertically movable sill in a storm sash frame and providing tension for holding the said sill in predetermined location.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a storm sash frame incorporating a vertically adjustable sill piece for filling in the area at the bottom of the storm sash frame to compensate for drop sill window, constructions.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a storm sash frame and a vertically movable sill piece and spring tensioned members for holding the said vertically movable sill piece in tight engagement with the frame and/or the sill of the window in which the frame is installed.
The ventilating sill for. stormwindows shown and described herein comprises a simple and economical means of varying the vertical height of a storm window frame to match a dwelling house window opening in which the same is to be I installed. Additionally, the construction disclosed herein provides for controlled ventilation through the window without moving the storm sash in the storm sash assembly. The movable sill portion is held under constant spring tension in the storm window frame by a plurality of spring clips which both mount the ventilating sill on the storm window frame and hold it in any desired position with respect thereto.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front plan View of the lower portion of a storm window assembly incorporating a ventilating sill.
Figure 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Figure Figure 3 is a plan view of the inside of the lower portion of the storm window assembly and ventilating sill shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the spring clips used in the storm window and ventilating sill assembly shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
By referring to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 in particular, it will be seen that a window casing of a dwelling house window has been partially illustrated and is indicated by the numeral III. The sill portion thereof is indicated by the numeral II. A mounting frame I2 is positioned in the opening defined by the casing l0 and the sill II. and engaged upon the blind stop I3. A storm window frame I4 is secured at its edges in the mounting frame I 2' and its lower end is spaced with respect to the sill The frame I4 carries at least one storm sash I5 including a window pane I6.
By referring to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings it will be seen that the frame I4 has a flange I1 with a T headed end section I8 thereon and a rib I9 spaced immediately below the flange I1 is provided with an inturned edge section 20 and a vertically movable sill panel 2|, including an inturned transverse flange 22 serving as a handle, is engaged against theinner surface of the frame I4 and the inturned lower edge 20 thereof, as best shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, so that it forms a closure between the lowermost portion of the storm sash frame I 4 and the sill II.
In order that the sill panel 2| may be held in such position, a plurality of spring clips 23 (see Figure 4) are positioned in the frame I4 and between the flange I1 and the rib I9 thereof and in the channel defined by the outer portion of the frame I4 and inner surface of the T head I8 on the flange I1. The spring clips 23 are preferably formed of stainless steel or an equivalent and the main bodyportion thereof is normally inclined downwardly and forwardly (to the right in Figure 2) and bears against the inner side of the sill panel 2| at a point thereon adjacent the inturned edge 20 of the frame I4.
Each spring clip. 23 is provided with a right angle section 24 and a pair of oppositely disposed hook-like sections 25, the hook-like sections 25 engaged over the rib I9 and beneath the flange I! while the right angle section 24 is engaged against an inner surface of the T headed portion I8 on the flange I1. It will thus be seen that any tendency of the sill panel 2| to move inwardly (to the left in Figure 2) will merely cause the spring clip 23 to more tightly engage itself in position.
It will thus be seen that a simple and efiicient means of attaching and tensioning the sill panel 2| is disclosed and which acts in combination with the storm window frame IE to form an efi'icient weather-tight closure which may be opened for ventilation, if desired, and which adds a desirable vertical :section :to the storm window: frame. enabling the same to compensate for differences in window height as occasioned by drop sill constructions.
