Another objecty isi `to provide an article of the character vdescribed in which a handle is furnished with .a head having a hook. portion formed integral therewith and carrying a detachable element connected to a leader with means for actuating the detachable element and controlling the leader.
A further object is to provide an article of this type which is oi simple, durable construction whereby the above and other objects .may

Broadly, lmy invention comprises a boat hooi;V having a handle portion and a head mounted thereon,.said head and handle carrying cooperating means operably 'controlled from elements located on the handle and adapted to lead a line through an eye. Referring to the accompanying drawings: Fig. l represents a detail side elevation of my improved boat hook;

The boat hook comprises a handle I fitted at one: end with a head `2 which is secured in place by the usualpin. The head i2 consists of a knob 4 and the customary hook 5: formed integral' with the head.V `ll-landle I is suitably channeled or grooved at 29 :throughout a substantial portion of one surface to :accommodate an armored'wire 6`, .one end of which isf connected to an operating pull button I and the other end of which vis operatively fastened to a :latch 8: Abiased by spring 9 associated therewith.
Latch -8A is located: to 'engage-the outer extremity of a swingabl'e, lever I 'swung l'on the head .2` by'meansV of api-n I I to releasablyhold said lever in its inoperative position, as shown. in, Figs. 1 and .2. Lever I0 is. provided with. a hole I2 anda eut-outportion I3 forl purposes to be described below. Suitable mechanism such as a spring I4 mounted, on pin II` and engaged with the underside of lever lil to urge same into operative position is provided.
A detach-able element I'5- is removably mounted in a vrecess I6 in the outer end. of hook 5 and is held in proper relationship therewith by means of its tail portion 3i) shaped to. frictionally engage the walls of recess I6 and a centering pin I T. The latter cooperates with a longitudinal exterior groove I8 which extends along the hook 5 from the recess in its outer end to `and through the knob 4 of head 2 (see,v Fig. 5). A spring actu;- ated latch I9 is `carried by element I5 and:` is swingably pinned therein by the pin 20 and urged outwardly by the coil spring 2 I.
Fastened. to the rear end. of element I5 is a flexible leader 22y of stainless wire or other suitable material", which leader ordinarily is led from element I5 through the groove i8 and down the back of handle I Where the portion adjacent its end is surrounded by a spring 23 connected thereto. Said last named spring 23. isreleasablfy held. in a clip 24 mounted on handle. I and enables the` leader 22' to assist. in holding element I 5' in position on hook 5. The depending end of leader 22. is. furnished with a Asnap hook 25 to operatively connect the leader to the mooring line 26' which may be furnished with an end fitting 21 of a design to accommodate. hook 25.
'fhey loperation of myv invention is as' follows:
it` desired. to thread the mooringline 26 `through a mooring eye 28, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 with snap hook 25 connected to tting 21 on the end of line 26. The boat hook is then seized by handle I and the hook 5 carrying detachable element l5 is passed through mooring eye 28. The operator then pulls button I connected to wire 6 and thereby moves latch 8 downwardly against the compression of spring 9 until said latch clears the end of swingable lever I0. -As soon as lever II) is clear of latch 8, spring I4 acts to rock lever Ill about its pivot pin II to the position shown in Fig. 3, the hole I2 in lever ID passing over the detachable element I5 and its latch I9. Serving to limit the throw of lever I is the cut-out portion I3 which abuts the face of head 2, while latch I9 prevents disconnection of lever lil from element I5. Spring 23 is then disengaged from clip 24 permitting leader 22 to be slacked oli through groove I8 or cleared therefrom, if desired.
` l'Ihe head 2 on handle I is now pushed toward eye 28 until said eye contacts lever I0, thereby disengaging element I from hook 5. Hook 5 is then Withdrawn from eye 28 and it will be seen that element I5 latched to lever I0 and connected to leader 22 is drawing same through said eye 28, as is shown in Fig. 4. This operation is continued until the operator can reach leader 22 and complete the threading of line 26 through eye 28 by pulling in the leader attached thereto.
When the mooring operation has been accomplished hook 25 may be detached from tting 27; lever Ill unlatched from element I5; element I5 placed in recess I6; leader v22 led back through groove I8; spring 23 placed in clip 24; and all the parts returned to the positions shown in Fig. 1. y
` It will also be seen that if it is not desired to complete the mooring operation by threading the line through the ring, my invention'enables the boat hook to be used in its customary fashion to hang on and cast off or fend off as seems advisable; the parts meanwhile being maintained in their positions as shown in Fig. 1 by the latch 8, leader 22 and clip 24.
It is evident that various changes may beresorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and therefore I do not intended to be limited to the embodiment herein shown and described except as set forth in the following claims.
WhatI claim is:
1.'A boat hoolf: comprising, a handle, a head mounted thereon, a longitudinal channel extending throughout a substantial portion of the handle, an armored wire located in the channel, means for actuating the wire at its lower end, a spring latch attached to the upper end of said Wire,a swingable spring biased perforated lever mounted on the head and restricted by said latch, a hook portion formed integral with Said head, a recess in said hook, a detachable element mounted in said hook recess for coaction with said swingable lever, a latch carried by said detachable element, a groove in the head and hook interconnected with the hook recess, a leader attached to the detachable element at its inner end and located in said groove, a spring on the lower end of the leader, a Vclip mounted on the handle near its lower end to receive the said spring, and a snap hook on the lowerend of the lead wire adapted to receive a cable.
2*.,Aboat hook comprising a handle, a head mountedthereom a back .formed integral with said head, a detachable element mounted on said hook, swingable means mounted on the head, means for bringing said swingable means toward and into operative engagement with said detachable element, a latch on the handle normally restraining said swingable means, a remote release for said latch mounted in the handle, and means for securing said swingable means to said detachable element, the parts being vso constructed and arrangedthat the operation of the latch release enables the swingable means to be biased into operative engagement with the detachable element.

means for bringing said swingable means toward and into operative engagement with said detachable element comprising a spring based on the head and biasing the swingable means toward said detachable'e'lement, a latch on the handle normally restraining said swingable means, a remote-release for said latch mounted in the handle, and means for securing said swingable means to said detachable element, the parts being so constructed and arranged that the operation of the latch release enables the swingable means to be biased into operative engagement with the detachable element.
4. A boat hook comprising a handle, a head mounted thereon, a hook. formed integral with said head, a recess in said hook, a detachable element mounted in said recess, swingable means mounted on the head, means for bringing said swingable means toward and into operative engagement with said detachable element, means for-securing said swingablemeans to said detachable element and 'carried thereby, and means for holding the detachable element in said hook recess including a tail portion of said element provided With a centering pin riding in said hook recess, ileXible means attached to said detach'- able element; and mechanical means on the handle so constructed and arranged that the iiexible means is yieldingly held to the handle.
5. A boat hook comprising a handle', a head mounted thereon, a hook formed integral with said head, a recess in said hook, a detachable element mounted in said recess, swingable means' mounted on the head, means for bringing said swingable means toward and into' operative engagement with said detachable element, means for securing said swingable means to said detachable element and carried thereby, and vmeans for holding the-detachable elementin said hook recess including a tail portion of said element provided with a` centering pin riding in said hook recess, flexible means attached to said detachable element 'and mechanical means on the handle so constructed and arranged that the flexible means is yieldingly held to the handle, said last named means comprising a clip on the handle and a spring on the flexible means engageable by said clip.l
6. A boat hook comprising a handle, a head mounted thereon, a hook formed integral with said head, a detachable element mounted on said hook, swingable means mounted on the head, means for bringing said swingable means toward and into operative engagement with said detachagle element, the hole in said swingable means being aligned with said detachable element, means forlimiting the outward swing of said swingable meanscomprisng a cutout in the base of said means engageable with the outer surface of the head, a latch on the handle normally restraining said swingable means, a remote release for said latch mounted in the handle, and means for securing said svvingable means to said detachable element, the parts being so constructed and arranged that the operation of the latch release enables the swngable means to be biased into operative engagement with the detachable element.

A boat hook comprising a handle, a head mounted thereon, a hook formed integral with said head, a detachable element mounted on said hook, svvingableV means mounted on the head, means for bringing said swingable means toward and into operative engagement with said detachable element, a latch on the handle normally restraining said swingable means, a remote release for said latch mounted in the handle, and means for securing said swingable means to said detachable element, the parts being so constructed and arranged that the operation of the latch release enables the swingable means to be biased into operative engagement with the detachable element, said securing means comprising a spring biased latch mounted in the detachable element.
8. A boat hook comprising a handle, a head mounted thereon, said head comprising a knob, and a hook formed integral with-said head and projecting therefrom, a detachable element mounted on said hook at its outer end, swingable means mounted on the head, means for bringing said swingable means toward and into operative engagement with said detachable element, and means for holding the detachable element to the hook, said last named means comprising a longitudinal groove extending across the head, knob and hook portions and a ilexible leader aflixed to the detachable element and located in said groove below the upper edges thereof, the parts being so constructed and arranged that the knob is available for tending off Without damage to said fiexible leader.
