arcuate axial movement of the door on the hinges so as to define the angle or opening. Another object of this invention is to provid an adjustable door stop, whereby an easy adjustment may be facilitated to change or regulate the desired angular opening of the door.
Another object of this invention is to provide a door stop or door check, which is concealed, except when the .door is opened, and even then is semi-concealed, in that it isconnected between the abutting faces of thedoor and door casing.- A meritoriousfeature'of this invention resides ,in the provision of a door stop or door stay, having its operative assemblyhoused within a recess formed in the door casing, and which is adjustable for defining the axial movement of the door,

, and which is adjustable for looking or maintaina ing the door in any desired position, with its face removed or spaced from the complementary face of thecasing.
These and ancillary objects and other meritorious features are attained by this invention, a
preferred embodiment of which is described in the following description, by way of example only, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a fragmentary portion of a door 'hingedly secured to a door casing, with a door check, constructed according to the principlesof this invention, shown in operati've position therein, in dotted lines;

It is well-known that many doors, which are hingedly attached to a door c'asing'or other suitable'support, at times, after being opened, re-
turn to their closed position with undue haste and cause undue consternation and bodily harm.

(Cl. 292-262) 2 i To obviate this defect and also to maintain the door in a locked open position, there has been devised a number of door checks or stops-[For many reasons, such as the unsightliness of the door check assembly connected between the door casing. and the outer side of the door, .theiriability of door checks to maintain the door in an open position, due to the heavy weight of the door, the short life of the door checks caused by the constant and repetitious opening of the door, which tends to bind or grate the connecting structure, the door checks or door stops devised did not prove fruitful. V
Therefore, it is the primary purpose of this in} vention to provide an improved doorcheckor door stop, which has its locking assembly housed within a recess formed in the door casing so asflto be concealed except when the door is opened and even then, to be semi concealed between the angular'opening formed by the casing base and the door face, which abut together, when the door is closed. Also, it is the purpose of this in vention to provide a durable'and, eflicient door check that will conveniently and eificiently prevent the arcuate or axial movement of the door on the hinges away from the door casing, so that the axialmovement of the door is controlled and limited, thereby obviating the tendency of the door to ,swingcompletely around on the hinges and bind or break the hinges or cause other material damage.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein a preferred embodiment of this invention is shown for illustrative purposes, and wherein similar characters designate corresponding parts throughout, there is shown a door casing, it, to which is hingedly secured by hinges it,

This door check or stop comprises an elongated longitudinally extending threaded tube or rod 22, which is slidably housed within a rectangular recess, of suitable dimensions, and having opposing side Walls 26 and23, disposed and arranged within the casing. A sleeve 2s of suitabie material, is arranged around the side walls of the recess and may comprise any type of friction material; 35, having its outer ends flanged and. inserted within notches formed in the abutting face of the casing.

This sleeve or band 35 may comprise suitable material, such as a resilient spring steel expansion band, which is provided for frictional or looking engagement with the frictional sleeve 353, secured to the op posing side walls 25 and 23 of the rectangular recess 25.
Disposed on one end of the threaded rod 22 is an arcuate head portion 38, having a centrally disposed aperture formed therein.
Suitable means are provided to retain the door in limited or controlled engagement with the casing and the assembly slidably received within the casing and includes an elongated faired screw 18 having a forwardly projecting arcuate head portion t2, which has a centrally disposed aperture formed therein.

Thus it can be seen that when the door !2 is closed and the respective faces and 2d of the door and the casing abut each other, the stop or check assembly is concealed and is rendered non-visible. When the door 52 is open and swings on tle hinges it in an arcuate angular movement away from the casing it, the tube or rod 22, having the tapering nuts and 3 2 adjustably received thereon, will be moved a proportional distance from the housing or recess 24. With reference to Figure 2 of the drawings, it can be seen that when the door is at right angles to the casing, the assembly it, unless the connecting member 3% is otherwise adjusted or extended, will limit the movement or" the door away from the casing at the same time, will prevent the door from returning or swinging bac on the i l for a short duration However, the assembly will not retain the door in the angular position shown in Figure 2, but will allow the door to smug back on the hinges to a closed position, unless the looking or retaining To the tapered nut t l, so as to move the tapering and further within the inner surface of the resilient steel band 36 and thereby sprea the band further apart, until the sides of the band were in rictional or look ng engagement with the sleeve formed on the side walls 2-2- and E6 of the recess 24. 'Thus it can be seen that when this locking adjustment s the door i2 will be prevented from moving from the open position to a closed position, unless of course, a heavy manual pressure is applied thereto. However, the assembly will prevent the swinging or moving of the door, usually caused by the Wind or accidental jarring or the like.
To define a greater axial movement of the door on the casing, so that the door may be allowed to move on the hinges to form a greater angle than a right angle, but at the same time the surfaces of the respective door and easing will be prevented from touching, so as to bind or break the hinges i i, the pivot pin which secures' the pivotal connection between the apertured head as and the clevis E2 is removed. Then, the clevis 52 is rotated so that the threaded shank 515 is removed a spaced distance from the threaded bore 513, constructed and arranged in the body portion 56 of the connecting mezn It is thus apparent that there has been provided an eificient and durable means for check ing or halting the axial or angular movement of a door on its hinges away from the casing also an elhcient and durable means ior maintaining the door any selected open position. 1
Of course, since many other modifications and purposes will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon a perusal of the description, in view of the accompanyingdrawings, it is to be understood that certain changes in style, shape and structure may be efiected without a departure from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
l. A door check for a door hinged on a door casing, said casing having a lined cylindrical recess formed therein, comprising a threaded rod sli-dably housed in the recess, a longitudinally split resilient band disposed concentrically around the rod and adapted to irictionally engage the sides oi the lined recess, a oi longitudinally adjustable members disposed on the rod and adapted to engage the opposing ends or" the band and spread the band apart, an apertured head portion on one end of the rod, a connecting member having oppositely projecting paired eye members, one of the eye members being pivoted to the head or" the red, at fastening member adapted for insertion in the door, the other eye member being pivoted to said fastening member, means for adjusting the connecting member to control the arcuate travel the door.
2. A door check for a door hinged on a door casing, said casing being formed with a lined cylindrical recess, comprising a threaded rod slidably housed in the recess, a longitudinally slotted resilient band disposed concentrically around the rod, a pair of inwardly tapered memhers r ceived on the rod and longitudinally adjustable hereon for engagement under the ends of the band and selectively moving the resilient band in and out of frictional engagement with the lined side walls of t e recess, a fastening member inserted in the door, an adjustable connecting member pivoted to the tube and fastening member. a
