(Cl. 312-195) 'i 3 Claims. i This invention relates to new and useful improvements in desks, and the primary object of the present invention is tov provide a desk includinga removable table top so designed as to permit the desk to lbe conveniently carried through door openings of a size smaller than the size of the table top;
Another important object of the present inven-`` tion is to provide a removabie table top for desksr and the like including a drawer frame fixedly secured to the lower face of the table extending the Width of the table top to provide an enlarged area for the reception of selected articles.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a desk including a removable table top and novel and improved means for locking the table top in position to the cabinet portion of the desk.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a desk that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages resde in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention, showing the table top (in part) positioned above the base portion of the desk;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal Vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 2; and V Figure 4 is a transverse Vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4 4 of Figure 2. I
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numerals and l`2 represent the base portions or cabinet sections of the present desk generally, each comprising uprights or legs M, transverse side walls l 6, a bottom wall IS, end wall 20, and a substantially rectangular frame 22 at the upper ends of the legs Hl. Slidably mounted in transverse guide strips carried by the inner faces of the side Walls are drawers 261.
The numeral 28 represents a table top of any suitable shape and of a Width greater than the length-of the cabinet sections. Fixedly secured to the lower face of the table top are pairs of substantially channel-shaped strips or guides 30 that Slidably receive the side edges of boards or plates 32 VWhich may be of a length greater than the length of the cabinets. In a normal position, these guide strips bear upon frame 22. y
Also fixedly secured to the inner or lower face of the table top is a drawer frame Se in which is slidably mounted a drawer 36. This frame 34 is normally supported on plates 3? projecting inwardly from the Opposing legs of the cabinets IO and 12.
In order to look and retain the table top in position between the cabinets, there are provided hinge members 38 carried by the guide strips 30 that are provided with slots that engage the outwardly projecting eyes 49 of anchor plates 42 fixedly secured to the Opposing transverse faces of the frame 22. Latch pins or the like 44 are inserted between the eyes 4!! and bear upon the hinge member to prevent disengagement of the table top with the cabinets.
Obviously, by increasing the size of the drawer frame 34, the distance between the cabinets may be Varied so that the base portions ID and IZ may support a table top of a size that would not normally pass through door openings.
In transporting and shipping the device, the table top is quickly and readily removed from the cabinet sections so that the cabinet sections and table top may be moved independently of each other.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A desk comprising a pair of spaced parallel vertically disposed cabinet sections, a plurality of slidable drawers carried by said sections including an upper drawer for each section, a table top for connecting said cabinets in spaced relation, pairs of spaced parallel transverse guide members secured to the lower face of said table top and 'f'bearing upon said cabinet sections, side boardsslidably received in selected pairs of said guide members, a drawer frame rigidly carried by the lower face of said table top and interposed between said cabinet sections, fa further drawer slidably mounted in said frame, means fcarried by said cabinet sections normally Supporting said frame, and means for locking said table top relative to said c'abinet sections, said locking means being conceald withiir'tiieasections andia'ccessible: only by the'op'ening of? the upper'di'awer'of each section.
2. The combination of claim 1 `wherein said locking means includes hinge means carriemby said guide members for positioning in said cabinet sections, anchor plates removably securediwith'im said cabinet sections, and meansffonsecuringsaid hinge means to said anchor plate.
3. A desk comprising a pair of spaced parallell.
.vertically disposed Cabinet sections, a plurality the upper endsof .theoabinet sections, side boards slidably received in.. selected pairs.. of... said-7 guide membersfand overlying the cabinetsections, a..
drawer frame rigidly carried by'the lower face of said table top and interposed between said .cabinet sections to function as a means for retaining the cabinet sections in spaced relationship, a further drawer slidably mounted in said frame, supporting means on said cabinet sections for said frame, said cabinet sections being open at their upper ends, hinge means carried by said guide members and received in the open ends of said cabinetfsections, ancf'on'pltesfsecured withlinV` said4 cabinetsections, andfmeans forl securing said hinge means to said anchor plates, said means for securing said hinge means to said anchor. plate being accessible upon the removal of the'upper drawer of each -cabinet section.
