Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEECE.
EUGENE DUCHAMP, OF ST. MARTI'NSVILLE, LOUISIANA.
DERRICK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,494, dated September 20, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGNE DUci-IAMP, of St. Martinsville, in the parish of St. Martins and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Derricks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l, is a front elevation of the derrick showing the several part-s in two positions. Fig. 2, is an end elevation of the same with the parts shown in the same positions.
My invention consists in the application and arrangement of double toggle-levers operated so as to simultaneously contract and expand by a right and left screw in connection with a boom or lever having its fulcrum vertically movable; and in applying tothis lever a cable one end of which is connected to the weight to be raised. and passing over pulleys in each end of the lever and under a fixed pulley on the platform of the derrick, and over a pulley fixed to the movable block operated by the togglelevers, the other end is wound around a drum fixed to the right and left screw so that by turning the screw by a crank or otherwise, both the fulcrum of the boom and the weight on the end of the cable will be elevated at the same time, described as follows.
In the drawings A, represents a strong frame which maybe made so as to rotate 0n a xed base, or it may be stationary as shown in the drawings, and in either instance sustained and braced by guy ropes in the usual manner for derricks. The frame consists of four vertical masts secured together by cross-ties within which is arranged the toggle-levers B, B, B, B, which are all four jointed to movable blocks C, C, which are operated by a right and left screw D, so that they will simultaneously contract or expand by turning the screw either' in a right or left direction. The toggle-levers B, B, are jointed to a fixed block E, and the levers B', B', are jointed to movable head block F, so that as the screw D, is turned in one direction, block F, will be elevated and by turning it in the reverse direction the block will be depressed. On the top of the block F, is a swivel standard G, to which is pivoted the lever or boom H, this point being the fulcrum of the boom, which is raised or depressed by the action of the toggle-levers. On each end of the boom are pulleys J, J, over which pass the cable K, which extends from the weight to be hung at X, over the top of the boom and is carried down and passed under a fixed pulley L, and thence over a pulley N, fixed to the bott-om of the movable block F, and finally passed over a pulley or flanged drum P, on the screw shaft D. This is a description of the several parts comprising my derrick, the operation of which is as follows By reference to the drawings, the boom is shown in black lines in a position ready for commencing the operation of raising a weight which is to be attached to the end of the rope or cable z-Then by turning the crank It, in the direction indicated by the arrow, the cable will be wound on the drum P, of the screw shaft which will draw down one end of the lever and consequent-ly elevate the weight suspended from the opposite end, at the same time by the contraction of the toggle-levers the fulcrum of the boom will be raised also. This operation is continued until the boom assumes the position represented by red lines in the drawing, when the fulcrum only will continue to be elevated and the weight further acted upon by the rope winding upon the drum of the screw shaft-Vhen the boom has been brought to the position shown by red lines in the drawing, and the rope wound up upon the drum, the derrick can be made ready for again performing the operation of elevating a weight by unwinding the rope from the drum and drawing down the boom again as above shown in the commencement of the operation.
rThis derrick can also be applied to the purpose of extracting stumps, for which purpose it will be found very useful as the parts possess great strength, and great power can be exerted by the peculiar combination of the toggle-levers, boom, and pulleys, also by changing the relative position of the boom, or in other words to invert the machine and introduce another head block so as to serve as a follower and operating this by the boom which thus becomes more properly speaking a lever, and arranging the pulleys and ropes substantially as above shown, I have a very powerful cotton press, hay press, etc.
I am aware that the application of the toggle-levers and right and left screw have been made to cotton presses, etc., but I do not claim the combination nor the application of these devices separately or irrespective of their arrangement; but,
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The combination of the toggles and right 10 and left screw, boom H, When the latter has its fulcrurn movable as above shown7 With the pulleys J, J, L, N, and P, When the same are arranged essentially in the manner and for the purposes herein above represented and described.
EUGNE DUCHAMP.
