BARREL MAKER FOR TOY BARRELS Filed Jan. '7, 1946 IN VENTOR O'ZayionJ/Vjebvth? ATTOR N EYS Patented Apr. 17, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,549,329 BARRELMAK Foa my EARRELS Clayton James Niebuhr, Dearborn, Mich.
Application January 7, 1946, Serial No. 639,594
1 1 Claim. (c1. 147-3) The invention relates to a constructive toy,
and more especiallyto a toy barrel making device.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein a youngster can operate it for the formation of miniature barrel bodies, including the setting of the staves, heads and hoops under the assembly I thereof, the device being of novel construction and is unique in the arrangement of its cooperating parts. I
Another object of the invention is the provision of'a device of this character wherein as a unit it vis a toy, and in the operation thereof is educational, retaining the interest of a youngster and affording instructions in barrel making.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simplein construction, readily and easily operated,
ing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing: 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing initially the setting of staves for a miniature barrel. Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the bar'- rel completed through the use of the device in the making thereof.
the claim assembly, when the barrel body A has been com.- pleted, and thereafter the end heads, one being 7 indicated at 25, can be fitted to this body,'with I Similar reference characters indicate corre-'' which rise opposed vertical end pieces H, which are of uniform height to each other;
The end pieces H support a top slab or panel i2, which'at a central area thereof is provided with a half-circular recess I3, while superimposed on the base or bed I 0 is a platform [4 having underslung sills I5 which raises the platform a slight distance elevated to the upper face of the base or bed, while provided in the said platform is a round opening l6 adapted to have one-half thereof register with the recess [3 in super position .thereto.
Mounted for vertical swinging movements by hinges I1 is a tilted "substantially U-shaped treadle [8, its side bars or branches 1 9 having the a z I The treadle 8 at the side branches I9 thereof has anchored thereto the ends of alooping strand or cable 20, which has the ends 'joined to the branches loosely threaded through holes 2| formed in the top slabor section i2 spaced from and opposite sides of the recess [3 therein, so that a loop formation22 in such strand or cable 20 can be-tightened or slackened in coinciding relation to such recess.
In the makingof miniature barrels, a complete one being denoted at B, in Figure 2 of the drawing, initially loose staves, each indicated at 23 is set in position, after the placement of the lowermost hOOpSJ24 have been placed on for encircling the lower portion of the required number of staves for the assembly of the. barrel body A above the platform, to have the loop formation 22 embrace this assembly, then bytightening the formation 22 about such assembly, the upper loops 24 are fitted about the upper portion of the a resultant barrel being completed.
The formation 22 is controlled by operating 7 the treadle I8, by the foot of a person using the device. 1
The stand may also be used for taking a barrel apart by placing the barrel in the stand, applying the coil in the rope around the upper end of the barrel and tightening the rope by the foot treadle. With the staves drawn together by the rope the hooks may readily be removed wherein the staves are released.
What is claimed is:
In a toy barrel making device, a stand, a base for said stand, a top slab above said base, said top slab having ahalf circular recess, a platform separate from said base and removable therefrom, but positioned thereon, said platform having a circular opening for vertical alignment with said recess in said top slab, a tightening and slackening cable located above said top slab,
said cable having a loop formation therein for registering with said recessin said top slab, and a foot treadle having side bars hinged to said stand at a point below the top slab thereof for controlling the tightening and slackening operationof said cable, opposite .ends of said cable passing through apertures in said top slab, and being secured to the said side bars of said treadle,
thus providing an operative connection between said cable and said treadle.
