SEPARATE AND INDIVIDUAL PRESSURE ADHESIVE PIECES WITH MEANS OF APPLICATION AND ATTACHMENT 0F SAME Filed April l0, 1947 ATTU RN EYB Patented Apr. 3, 1951 SEPARATE AND INDIVIDUAL PRESSURE AD- HESIVE PIECES WITH MEANS OF APPLI- CATION AND ATTACHMENT OF SAME Frederic Houghton Penney, West Newton, Pa.
Application April 10, 1947, Serial No. '740,674
vision of an adhesive tab having its tacky side normally covered with a pair of cover pieces each lprovided with an integral handle portion. The
tabs may be used as substitutes for metal paper clips, as a substitute for thumb tacks or staples for drafting paper, for the attachment of flyers and inserts to letters, for price tags, labels, stamp album hinges, advertising stickers and for many other purposes.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel construction in an adhesive tab.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel method of manufacturing such' tabs in quantity production.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel method of application of adhesive tabs to the materials to be connected.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a completely assembled adhesive tab made in accordance with the provisions of the invention.
Figure 2 is an exploded view showing the various parts of the invention before assembly,
Figure 3 is a plan view, partly broken away, showing one stage of the assembly of the invention,
Figure 4 is a end elevational view of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a plan view of a completed tab,
Figures 6 and 7 are views similar to Figure 5 but showing other shapes the tabs may take, and
Figures 8 to 11, inclusive, show graphically, in elevation, the method of application of a tab to a pair of sheets of materia1 to be connected thereby.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein an adhesive tab comprising a material engaging member Il] having a coating II of a tacky gelatinous adhesive known in the trade as a pressure sensitive adhesive compound and to the tacky side of which is removably aixed a pair of covers I2 and I3 having integral folded handle portions I4 and I5, respectively, the edges of the folds being contiguous as indicated at I6 to completely cover the member I0.
The method of assembly is as follows: A strip of material I0' which may be of paper, imitation leather, cellophane or any other thin flexible material is provided with a pressure adhesive floating Il. Over one-half of the area. of the strip I0 is longitudinally placed a strip I2 of cover material which may be of leather, cloth, paper, cardboard, plastic or other like materia1 and a portion Ivi is folded back upon itself. A like piece of material i3 is placed longtudinally upon the remaining half of the strip I0 and a portion I5' of the same folded back upon itself. These operations are preferably completed by a strip folding machine. The complete assembly may then be punched out as indicated by the dotted lines I'I to form the tab as shown in Figures 1 to 5 but may, of course, be punched in many other shapes as, for example, those shown in Figures 6 and 7.
The method of application of these tabs is illustrated in Figures 8 to 11, inclusive, wherein, for example, it is desired to fasten a sheet I8 to a sheet i9. The handle portion I5 of the cover I3 is grasped by the fingers of one hand and pulled so as to remove the cover from the material engaging member I0 thus exposing the adhesive II. The tab is now placed upon the sheets IB and I9 in such manner that the exposed portion of the member I0 lies upon the sheet I8. The handle i@ is then pulled and the cover I2 removed, as shown in Figure 10, and the remainder of the member I0 pressed against the sheet I9, as indicated in Figure 11.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An adhesive tab comprising a material engaging member, a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive upon one side of said member, a pair of covers detachably mounted upon one side of said member and an integrally formed handle portion for each of the covers, each of said handle portions being p-rovided by a fold in the cover and the edges of the folds being immediately contiguous to completely cover the adhesive and the member.
