The present invention relates to an improvement in mounting means for a circuit breaker and more particularly to a circuit breaker of the automatic opening and reclosing type.
The present application is a, division of earlier application Serial No. 511,019, filed November 20, 1943, now Patent No. 2,506,546. May 2, 1950, for Circuit Breaker.
A switch or circuit breaker of the above type should be readily and safely removable from service or be replaced in service without deenergizing the line and without subjectin the operator to the hazard of too close proximity to a dangerous electric circuit, so that the switch contacts and. associated controlling mechanism requiring repair or adjustment, due to wear on the various parts and stresses occasioned by service may be readily attended to b a repairman. It is an object of my invention to provide a mounting means primarily for use with an automatic reclosing switch having suitably associated insulators comprising the stationary part or section of the switch for incorporation. in the line, and a removable housing section comprising the switch contacts and associated controllin mechanism in which size weight of the removable housing section. are sufficiently small to be within the physical scope of an operator or repairman to manually remove or replace by the use of an insulated hook stick 0r pole.
Further objects, advanta es and features of my invention will appear from the detail descrip tion.
Now, in order to acquaint those skilled in the art with the manner of constructing and utilizing mounting means in accordance with my in vention, I shall describe in conjunction with the accompanying drawings a, preferred embodiment of the same.
Figure 1 is a mounting means for a side ele vational view of a circuit breaker constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Figure 2 is a plan View of the mounting means and circuit breaker of Figure 1.
The mounting means of my invention comprises in general a stationary mounting frame, insulated for supporting a removable housing section, electrical terminals for the line wires and for engaging the contacts of the removable housing section, and electrical conducting links for bypassing the removable housing section. The mounting frame as shown in the drawing comprises a channel member 254 to which is rigidly fixed frame member 255 assembled in the member 25 and extend at substantially right angles to the plane of the mounting frame with a center to center spacing coinciding with center to center spacing of the insulating housings 9 it? of the removable section or housing portion of the switch shown in the drawing. The insulated housings 9 and i enclose suitable switch members, for example, as described in my above identified application. Supporting brackets E62 and 253 are assembled on the other ends of insulators 259 and 250, respectively, and electrical terminal members 254 and 255 are assembled to the brackets 2:32 and 263 respectively by the terminal bolts 23% and 257. The terminal bolts 2% and 25? are also utilized for form'- ing terminals for the line wires.
The lower ends of the terminal elements 254 and 255 are of substantiall v form to engage in. the openings 213 and 2'59 of switch contacts l and 3 in the insulated housings Q and :9, respectively, and also act as a supporting means for the removable housing section of the circuit breaker shown.- In addition they form electrical contacts with the lips 280 with which the contacts '5 and 8 are formed.
The insulator 25! at the lower end of the mounting frame 255 has an angle bracket memher 215 of a clamping means 28| rigidly assembled at its outer end. A stud 2T6 is-threadedly engaged in the member Hi5. A slotted bracket member 22?? forming another element of the clamping means is fixed to the base 249 of the removable housing section. and is so located in relation to the bracket member 2'45 and the stud 216, that when the removable housing section has been assembled with the stationary section with the fixed contacts l and 3 engaged over the curved. ends of terminal elements 264 and 2%, the stud Zlfi will engage in the slot of bracket 21?, and the removable housing section will be held rigidly in place by tightening the stud 215. The lower end of stud 2'56 is of square cross section for nugly fitting into a comformably shaped recess in the end of an insulated hook stick or the like for manipulation by an operator.
A conducting link 2358 is hinged at 259 in electrical contact with the upper end of the terminal element 254 and a stud 212 is carried at the opposite end thereof. A conducting link 27! ishinged at 270 in electrical contact with the upper end of the terminal element 285. lhe relative lengths of links 268 and 271 are such that they may be moved into contactin position with each other with stud 212 of link 238 disposed in slot 2'53 formed in the outer end of link 21!. Rigid electrical contact is maintained therebetween by tightening of stud 272. The end of stud 272 is formed like stud 218 for engagement with the recessed end of the aforementioned insulated hook stick or the like to provide for safe manipulation by the operator. A stop lu 274 is formed on terminal 284 in position so that when the link 268 is moved into engagement therewith, the free end of the link 288 is then in position for the slot 273 of link 27! to engage the shank of stud 2T2 carried by link 268. It is therefore possible for an operator to close the line circuit through links 268 and 271i and thereby'allow opening, closing, removal, or replacement of the removable housing section enclosing a circuit breaker or the like without interrupting the line current.
In the preferred form of my invention a prong member 250 is fixed to the base plate 249 to extend downwardly, and it has an outer end portion of square cross section, like studs 272 and 278, for snug fitting engagement with the recessed end of the previously mentioned insulat- 1 ed hook stick. Other stud members, such as shown at MS and [83 for certain of the instrumentalities of the circuit breaker enclosed within the removable housing section, and the outer end of a worm gear shaft l3 for a spring motor for the breaker, are also preferably provided with outer end portions of the same size and configuration as outer end portions of studs 272 and 216, and prong member 253, so that all of them may be engaged with a common hook stick.
In View of the construction described, the removable housing section is adapted to be supported on a hook stick by disposing the prong member 250 in the recessed end of the hook stick. The hook stick may then be suitably manipulated to mount and dismount the removable housing section.
While I have shown what I consider to be a preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that various details, rearrangements, and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A mounting means for an automatic circuit breaking switch or the like having a pair of spaced switch contacts, comprisin a mounting frame for supporting the switch, and means providing a three-point mounting of the switch upon said frame comprising, a pair of terminals carried by said frame and spaced correspondingly to the spacing of said switch contacts, said switch contacts and said terminals being formed to provide a two-point suspension mounting of the switch upon said mounting frame, clamping means between the mounting frame and the switch providing the third mounting point for the latter, and a pair of blade members each pivotally mounted at one end thereof to one each of said terminals, said blades being adapted to be positioned to engage the other ends thereof with each other to shunt said switch.

Mounting means for a switch or the like having a pair of spaced switch contacts comprising, a mounting frame for supporting the switch, means providing a three point mounting of the switch upon the mounting frame comprising, a pair of terminals carried by said mounting frame and spaced correspondingly to the spacing of said switch contacts, said contacts and said terminals being formed to provide a two point suspension mounting of said switch upon said mounting frame, clamping means providing the third mounting point comprising a bracket member carried b said mounting frame, and a bracket member adapted to be carried by said switch, a bolt having its outer end formed to be engaged by a hook stick or the like for drawing said bracket members together to provide pressure contact between said terminals and said switch contacts, and a projection on said switch adapted to be engaged by a hook stick orthe likefor manually positioning said switch upon said mounting frame. means providing a three point mounting of said switch upon said mounting frame comprising, a pair of terminals carried by said mounting frame and spaced correspondingly to the spacing of said switch contacts, said contacts and said terminals being formed to provide a two point suspension mountin of said switch upon said mounting frame, clamping means providing the third mounting point comprising, a bracket carried by said mounting frame, and a bracket member carried by said switch, a bolt for securing said bracket members together providing pressure contact between said terminals and said switch contacts, a projection on said switch by which it is positionable upon said mounting frame, and a pair of blade members pivotally mounted at one end of each thereof to one of each of said terminals, a bolt carried by the other end of one of said blade members for securing the opposite ends of said blade members to each other, and the outer ends of said bolt and projection being formed to be engaged by a hook stick or the like.
