N PETERS. Fhulo-Lilhogmpher. Waahi nnnnnnnn UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CADE, OF MILAN, TENNESSEE:
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 254,609, dated March '7, 1882.
Application filed September 15, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE (JADE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milan, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation in section, ofmyimproved car-con pler.
This invention has relation to automatic carcouplers; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
A is the draw-head, the sides and bottom of which are closed, but provided with an open top, and having the recesses B and O. In the rear of the recess 0 is a crank-shaft, D, extending through the draw-head A from side to side, one end projecting and bent to form a crank, d. This shaft D is provided with a tooth or dog, a, which prevents any side motion to the shaft D, and is also the means by which said shaft is retained in place in the draw head. A link, E, of suitable forged metal, is provided at its outer end with the ring 6, and its inner end passes around the shaft D at the point where the dog a is formed, so that by lifting the crank d the link E will be raised. By raising the link E to a perpen- (No model.)
position indicated in Fig. 3. Then the dog ais in line with a slot, a, which permits the shaft D to be withdrawn.
The tapering recess B permits the cars to turn curves without straining the link E, and the ring 0 is intended to be used with the ordinary draw-head and coupling-pin when it is necessary to couple the ordinary style of car to those fitted with my improved coupler.
I am aware that a draw bar arranged to be set perpendicular, so that the concussion of the cars causes it to fall forward and couple them, is not new; also, that the employment of a shaft adapted to raise said draw-bar is old, and such I do not broadly claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, lS
In a car-coupler, the draw-head A, having recesses B O and slot or, in combination with the link or draw-barE e and the shaft D, hav ing the doga and crank 11, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE GADE.
