WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,588, dated March '7, 1882,
Application lcd December 2S, lBl. (No model.) I
To all whomt't may concern Be it known that I, Ransom G. BALDWiN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a sectional elevation of a washing-machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2, atop plan view ofthe hopper, and Fig. 3 a perspective view ofthe same.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in washing-ma chines; and it consists in the details of construction hereinafter described and subse-A quently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the usual suds-box, of any desired form and dimensions, supported upon suitable legs, a. Within the box A is a funnel-shaped hopper, B, to take up the space at the bottom of the box.' This hopper B has four inclined sides inclinng from the top in a direction toward each other, forming a funnel-shape hopper, as shown in Eig. 4r.A rlhe hopperB is removably connected to the box A, so that it can be lifted out for cleaning orl when it is desired to use the entire interior space of the box for large and heavy pieces of fabric, the hopper only being used for small or fine pieces of fabric-such as laces and the like. The hopper B is not only removable from the box A, but vertically adjustable by wedges, blocks, or oth'er suitable means. I have shown, however, a thumbscrew, b, passing up through the bottom'of the box and coming in contact with the hopper, this being 011e of many means of raising and lowering the hopper or changing its position with relation to the agitator C, the object beand at the same time renders the action of theagitator more eifective.
The cover or top c of the suds-box has suitably connected to its under side a metal bearing-plate, d, through which passes the shaft c of the agitator (l, upon the upper end of which is keyed a bevel-gear wheel, f. The upper end of the shaft c has its bearing in an arch, g, bolted to a base-plate, D, said base-plate being cast with uprights or standards h, which form bearings for a horizontal shaft, t'. To this shaft i is keyed a large bevel-gear wheel, E, which I term the driving-wheel,7 the teeth thereon meshing with those ofthe small gearwheel f, by which means the agitator is operated. The outer side of the driving-wheel E has vthree or more dovetail recesses, 7c, for connecting thereto a lever-,'thereby preventing the wearnot' the teeth on the wheel at one part more than another, the lever being moved from one recess k to another or changed at will, thereby having the wear come equally upon the entireY circumference of the wheel.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl In a washing'machine, thecombnation, with the suds-box A, agitator G,and mechanism for operating the same, of the removable and adjustable funnel-shaped hopperB, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RANSOM G.` BALDWIN.
