This invention relates to dispensing apparatus and more particularly to improved apparatus for dispensing substances which do not seek their own level such as grease from their original or repacked container to eifect the filling and/or packing of instrumentalities therewith.
It contemplates more especially the provision of a compact, more eilectiveand improved filling, packing and dispensing 'apparatus of the general type comprising the subject matter of my Letters Patent No.' 2,224,509, dated December 10, 1940, but consisting of a lesser number of parts, more simple construction, an improved combination of element'sthat iseasier to operate, more economical to manufacture, and more efficient in operation. .v l
One object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and improve the operation of devices of the character mentioned.
Another object isV the provision of a grease or similar substance dispensing apparatus that is readily attachable toa lubricant illed container for more readily'dispensing, filling and directly packing grease guns, bearings, and similar devices.
Still another object is the provision of a lubricant dispenser with a direct packing ejector fixed to the piston to accomi'nodate-grease guns and bearings4 of widely diierent lengths and diameters. i i
A further object is the provisionv of a grease dispenser r'with a flared ejector fixed directlyto the piston to accommodate grease guns and other instrumentalities tobe packedrwith the contents of a container.
A still further object is to provide a grease dispenser and packing device with; a conical ejector having a complemental closure to serve the dual function of a bearingpacking expedient and also as a closule for the discharge opening in the dispens-er piston. i Still a further object is to provide an improved grease dispensing and packing apparatus with a conical ejector attached to the piston and a complemental closure serving as=a bearing packing expedient in conjunction with said ejector.
An additional object is the provision of a grease dispensing device with a conical ejector 'directly' mounted on the piston andxhaving a conical closure for establishing'alxed connection with vthe ejector to serve'as complemental'packing in- 5 claims. (c1. 222-591) AIn the drawing:y A

The structure selected for illustration is not intended to serve as a limitation upon the scope or teaching of the invention, but is merely illustrative thereof; There may be considerable variations and adaptations of all or part of the teachings depending upon the dictates of commercial practice.v

The lpresent embodiment com-prises instrumentalities intended fordetachable association with a container l0 that is either the original container wherein grease is packed at the factory or a refill container depending upon they dictates of commercial practice. Containers of this type usually have an outwardly extending projecting peripheral ange il defining the open top end I2 thereof that is normally closed with a cover plate (not shown) that rests in a peripheral seat i3 that merges with the flange I I. rContainers of this type usually are provided with a the container lil. To this end, the clamping bands ite-li are preferably shaped from square rod stock so that they will be complemental to each other so as to embracethe container I0 bef lo-w the peripheral top flange il thereon.
The clamping bands IB-ll have bent eyelets iii-I9 at one of theirextremities and these confront spaced 4ears 2`2| comprising part of a yoke or bracket assembly 22 which is stamped orfotherwise shaped fromcomparatively heavy gauge sheet material to present upstanding sides the upstanding sides 23-25 and it terminates in l downwardly depending' confronting anges 28-29 that are spaced for a distance somewhat larger than the diameter of the peripheral container iange Il for resting support-thereon.
The depending confronting flanges 28--29 vare disposed between the ears 20--2l and 25--26, respectively, and the latter serve as mounts for the confronting container engaging clamping bands I6|1. To this end, the bent eyelets |8-l9 in one of the band extremities, areuengaged by a threaded bolt 30 that extends therethrough and also through apertures in the adjacent ears 20-2l to pivotally connect the clamping bands l-E--I'l to the yoke 22 at one extremity thereof -by pivotal connection with the confronting adjacent ears 28-2I. The other extremities of the clamping'bands lli- I1 are provided with outwardly offset extremities 3I-32 which loosely project through asomewhat larger rectangular opening 33 provided in the depending flange 29 of the yoke 22 (Figure 2). A tongue 28' isstruck from the yoke bottom plate 21 (Figure 1) to depend therefrom and engage the interior'wall of the open container top end I2 which is straddled between the yoke flanges 28 and 28', thereby seating the yoke 22 thereon.
With this arrangement, the clamping bands l6-l'1 are movably associated with the yoke 22 for a limited distance sufficient to be displaceable over the peripheral container flange Il and still be retained therebeneath responsive to theapplication of pressure onth'e grease contents of the container I0. As a result, the yoke V22 can be readily applied and removed froml the container l0 without any manual adjustment or manipulation which would entail time and labor. -It will be apparent, therefore, that the yoke -2-2i-can be readily associated with the Vcontainer l0 to engage underneath the ange ll responsive to the application of pressure relative-to the yoke l22, thereby tightening the engagement of the complemental bands l6-l1 with the container i0 beneath the peripheral lflange Il and thus-'securely anchoring the yoke 22 and its` side plates 23-24 thereto.
The clamping bands lli- I1 can be spread sufficiently when the yoke y22 is under no pressure, toassume a diameter somewhat larger than the peripheral container flange H so that theI yoke 22 with the clamping bands I6-I1 can be lifted thereover and removed from the container l0. The yoke 22 carries a handle 34 that is preferably stamped from relatively heavy gauge sheet material to present a substantially inverted U- shaped cross section and to provide an elongated slot 35 therein vto receive the piston rod 36 that is threadedly attached to a hub 31 for an integral with a comparatively flat parallel piston 38. The comparatively flat peripheral piston 38 has a relatively narrow upstanding peripheral flange 39 thereon (Figure 4) formed integralthereon'to provide a peripheral groove 40 in the circumferential end surface 4I thereof to receive a yieldable sealing ring such asa rubber gasket 42 having a projecting flange 43 thereon for tighten- 4 gagement with the peripheral groove 40 in the circumferential piston surface 4I.
The sealing ring 42 has peripheral diverging flanges 44-45 that are formed integral therewith to present tight sealing engagement with the interior cylindrical wall of the container I0 and thus preclude the leakage of air or grease between the piston sealing ring 42 and the interior cylindri'cal wall `of the container IVO. rTo this end, the upper diverging flange 44' is co'mparatively'shorter than the lower and relatively diverging flange 45 sothat the downward pressure displacement of theppistonv38-wi1l=cause the sealing ring 42 to more tightly engage the interior cylindrical wall of the container I0 as the pressure increases and thus create an effected sliding seal therebetween.
To increase the rigidity and load sustaining capacity of the piston 38, a plurality of radial ribs 46,A iin-thisinstance five, are formed integral with the upper surface of the piston 38 between its hub y31 `and the peripheral piston'flange '39. In order to manipulate and power displace the piston rod v36 together with itsl piston 38 under va comparatively large pressure rodV to displace the greaseor` other contents-of the container I0, a handle 34fisl pivoted at-one extremity 41 thereof toV parallel upstanding ears 48-49 vconstituting extensions Aof the yoke sideplates=2324 to carry a pintle50 therebetween to pivotallysupport the handle extremity f41. The threaded aperture in the axial 'boss A31 of ftlie vpiston 31h-extends entirely `therethrough to breaky the vacuum therebeneath-responsive to 'removing the piston rod 36.
This enables the ready'withdrawal of the piston 38 after the container I0 isr empty. Otherwise, the unbroken vacuum would preclude or render very diflicult the removal of. the piston 38 from th'evcontainer t0 4unless Yspecial Aequiiprnent was provided-for lthat purpose. In order to depress the-'pistonr 38 downwardly against the contents in the container l0, simple 'ratcheting instrumentalities-are provided. The: ratcheting instrumentalities comprise, this instance, van apertured washer .5| which looselysurrounds the piston rod 36 to serve as a toggle or ratchet engaging pawl between thehandle 34- and therod 36.` To thisfe'n'd, the-"handle 34 liasfits opening 35 thereinwto looseiyreceive theA piston rod 36 therethrough.
The toggle washer or pawl 5l is loosely lodged ina transverselydi'sposedfslot-52 provided in the upstanding 'arm 5390i va toggle lever '5'4A that is preferablycast or otherwise 'shaped tov present a horizontally 'elongated vertical .slot 55 therethrough. The toggle lever 54 loosely 'receives the piston rod l36 throughitsfrelongated slot 55, and the toggle or ratcheting washer' 5l restsL thereon forretention in therslot 52 of the kups-tanding arm 53 ofthe toggleleverfM. The upstand-ing arm 53 of the toggle l'everSlll is pivotally supported on a pintle 56 which is carried by upstandingears 51-58 comprising anintegral part of the yoke plates 3i-44. Thevother extremity 59 of the toggle. lever 54 .is pilvotally` secured to spaced toggle links 60--6-I.' whichextend upwardly for pivotal support byfaipintle 62 extending between the confronting. walls r ofthe .substantially U-shaped handle 34.
It will-be apparent, therefore, that the'piston rod 36 is securely grasped by the toggle washer 5l i' as the handle 34 is :depressed downwardly owing to the inclination imposed on the toggle lever 54 and thewasher 5| carried thereby. This will Adisplace the pis-tonxrod' 3S downwardly with the handle 34 to impart corresponding. displacement of the piston 38 which yields only after the contents are ejected under pressure through an orifice 63 provided through the piston v33 proximate theperipheral flange 39. The orifice 63 byy with the interior of the container I0 beneath the pston 38 responsive to successive depressions of p the handle 34 which intermittently displaces the piston rod 36 and piston 38 downwardly. This intermittent downward displacement of the pistn 38 asserts pressure on the contentsr Which is extruded upwardly through the piston orifice 6,3 and the conical ejector 65 to dispense thecon-A tents and fill or pack .any suitable device therein. The conical ejector 55 has anupstanding cylindrical peripheral flange 66 to Atightly receive a closely fitting and correspondingly shaped closure 6l that preferably is provided with a substantially inverted U-shaped handle B8 having a reinforcing rib G9 upstanding therefrom to enable the convenient manual grasp thereof for closing the orifice 63 when tightly embraced Within the funnel-like ejector 65 or to securely hold instrumentalities such as a bearing raceway 10 within the ejector. 65 so as to effectively pack it with grease under pressure.
To this end, the pointed portion of the closure Si closes the opening 'Il inthe bearing H so that the grease will be extruded under pressure in and around the bearings 12 provided in the raceway it. Other instrumentalities can be smilarly packed .with grease and theV provision of the taperedifunnel-like conical ejector'65 directly on the piston 38 affords the effective using of this device for the purpose of packing instrumentalities such as thebearing raceway 'i0 or to ll elongated grease gun barrels 13 of any suitable types-(the pusher type being shown in dotted outline in FigureY l) merely by applying the open end of the barrel and holding same downwardly against the conical ejector 65 While the handle '34 is intermittently depressed to extrude the grease upwardly through the piston orifice It should'be noted that the raising or lifting of a'handle 34 (Figure l) will place the toggle washer I in a substantially normal horizontal position relative to the piston rod 36 so that the latter will loosely fit therethrough and Willnot be affected by .the grasp thereof. This will permit relatively upward displacement between the handle 36 and the piston rrod 36. The opposite is true'responsive to the downward displacement of the handle 3d as the latter movement will cause the washer to incline through the action of the toggle lever 54 thereon so that a ratcheting action will intermittently displace the piston rod 36 downwardly and result in the upward extrusion of the viscous substance which may be grease or any other suitable material depending upon the dictates of commercial practice and the uses to which the device is to be put.
It should be noted that the telescopic fit between the rims of the conical ejector 65 and the closure 61 should be rather tight and sufficiently accurate to preclude the grease or other viscous substance from oozing 'therebetween even under appreciable pressure. It should be noted that whenthe closure 61 is removed'from the corneal ejector 65, the flared Wall of the latter converges downwardly tesubstantially the.

This conical configuration is such as to adapt the application of variously sized bearing raceways 10 and grease guns 'f3 and the like (Figures 1 and3)y which are disposed therein for retention in effective (engagement therewith for packing or filling or for anyr other purpose which may be suggested by com-v mercial practice. I Y 4 It should be noted that with the construction as described herein, not only aneffective substance filling and dispensing apparatus is provided, but an inexpensive device is capableof production substantially from stampings save for comparatively few parte such as the toggle lever 5d and the clamping bands I'G-I that are produced from standard rod stock of substantially the desired shape and cross-sectionalsizell :This coupled with the extreme simplicity of assembly and operation of the device, is conducive toV a marked improvement in vdevices of this; character.
While I have illustrated and described apreferred embodiment of this invention, it mustfbe understood that the invention is capable ofconsiderable variation and modification withoutideparting from the spirit of the invention.v `I, .therefore, do not wish to be limited to the vprecise .details of construction set forth, but desire toavail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.` Iclaim: t 1. in a device of the character described, the combination with an adjustable container en- NYgaging bracket plate of substantially U-shaped configuration, of a piston rod reciprocally asson ciated with said bracket plate, a piston sized to the interior of a container to which Vsaid bracket plate is attached, said piston being threadedly connected to the lower end of said rod, there being a discharge orifice in saidv piston, an upwardly and outwardlywfiared machine part engaging adapter connected directly to said piston, said flared adapter having `an intake oricesized to correspond with said piston discharge Vorifice, said piston discharge and adapter intake orices being in unrestricted directcom'munication .to permit the free" flow of the contents'under pressure therethrough with said adapter resting V'di'- rectly on said piston, a closure flared to substantially conform with said ared adapter to serve as a closure and a fiared machine'part engaging member in conjunction with said adapter, said U-shaped bracket plate having a depending end flange, a depending tongue struck from. said bracket plate in confronting spacedlrelation to said bracket end fiange to receive a container edge therebetween for application of said bracket plate diametrically over the container top, and handle means operatively connected to said piston rod to intermittently displace said piston rod and piston downwardly to eject viscous substances through said discharge orice and said adapter.
