Description
J. G. PERRY.
Sausage Stufier. I No. 25,440. r Patented- Sept. 13, 1859.
UNITED STATES PATENT orricn.
JOHN G. PERRY, OF KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND.
SAUSAGE-STUFFER.
i Specification of Letters Patent No T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. PERRY, of Kingston, in the county of Vashington, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improved Machine for Filling Sausages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulland correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters of reference marked thereon, similar letters in the different figures denoting the same parts.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of the machine open to show the internal arrangement. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the machine closed ready for operating.
The distinctive feature of my machine, in which it difiers from others made for the same purpose consists mainly in using a cylinder having a special cavity in its periphery in combination with a nozzle or nozzles and a follower or leaf-cam fitted into and working in this cavity,so that by their combined action the meat is forced out the nozzle into the cases.
To enable others skilled in making machinery to construct my machine I will describe its different parts and mode of operation.
The case A is a hollow cylinder divided horizontally through its center into an upper and lower part, which are hinged together on one side and provided with a fastening a upon the other side to keep it closed while in operation. On both the upper and lower parts of the case A are made flat semicircular projections B B (square to the plane of revolution of the cylinder C) which when the two parts of the case are shut together, form, by means of a slight projecting ridge on each, a chamber to hold the follower or leaf cam D.
C is a cylinder with a spiral hollow made in its surface, into which is fitted the leaves of the follower or cam D which may be made with two or more leaves and is pivoted at its center on a stud or screw-pin (Z, which passes through the center of the projection B. The cylinder C has a shaft E projecting at one end upon which it turns in a bearing F at the end of the case opposite to the dis- 25,440, dated September 13, 1859.
charging orifice or orifices. Upon the outer end 6 of this shaft is placed the crank or pulley for communicating motion to the cyl- I inder the other end of which mayor may not 1 have a journal at its center to turn on, as it is not necessary that it should, because the body of the cylinder turning in the case will keep it in place and steady.
G G are the discharging tubes or nozzles which hold the bags or cases that are to receive the meat; there may be one or more of these nozzles and they may be placed directly in the end, or in the side of the case A.
H is a hopper for receiving the meat into the machine.
The operation of the filler is as follows: Motion being given to the spiral cylinder C the meat is steadily fed in through the hopper without having to stop and reverse the motion as is necessary in loading others, and is received into the spiral cavity of C and is carried around with it until it comes in contact with the leaf of the follower, when being prevented from going around any farther with the cylinder it is compelled by the combined action of the cylinder and follower to pass forward to the end of the machine and out of the nozzles into the cases that are placed on them, and so continually fills and delivers the sausages from the nozzles into the receiver below. If it were not for the obstruction offered by the follower or leaves D the meat would have too great a tendency to continue turning around with the cylinder instead of being forced toward the end of the machine. The follower and spiral cavity are so adapted to each other that as one leaf is forced out by the action of the cylinder, another leaf is carried in so that there is one filling a horizontal section of the cavity at all times.
I claim- Combining the cylinder C, having a spiral cavity, or cavities, with the follower D, substantially as described, for the purposes herein set forth.
JOHN G. PERRY.
