UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT STORY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES E. BILLINGS, OF SAME PLACE.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,404, dated February 28, 1882.
Application filed May 12, 1881.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT STORY, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New'Jersey, have invented certain useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives. of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvementin the class of pocket-knife handles which are constructed of metal, and have the spring that acts on the blade madein one piece with the handle. The improvement consists in striking up the handle and spring from a single piece of sheet metal, the said parts having the foi m and relative arrangement hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a blank cut into proper shape for forming the knife handle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a knife constructed according to my invention. Fig.3 is adetail view. Fig. 4is a longitudinal section of a portion of a complete knife.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
the case or handle of a knife, having sides B B, which are bent so as to form the sides of the handle, and tongues O G, which form the The blank is cut into the proper shape for (ModeL) ends the blank is made with a corresponding number of tongues, and the partition D is placed between two of said tongues. The partition D has a hole for a rivet or pin at its outer end, and a notch E for engagement with the end of the slot between the tongues to secure its inner end. The arrangement of said partition with reference to the tongues is illustrated in Fig. 4. When the knife is to have one blade at each end the blank is formed as shown in Fig. 1, and the partition D is not used.
The middle part, H, of the blank, may be roughened or formed into a file,'and may be used when the knife is completed, as shown in Fig. 2, for filing the nails or for other purpose.
In some cases two or more blades or tools may be actuated by one spring, in which case the partition D is not used; butinstead thereof a washer may be interposed between the blades.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a knife-handle struck up from a single piece of sheet metal and formed with sides B and tongues G, as shown and described.
HERBERT STORY. YYitnesses:
