SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,276, dated February 28, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, S. N. CLEVENGER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Rayville, in the county of Ray and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bay Staekers and Rickers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.

.This invention has relation to devices for inelosing and protecting stacks and ricks of hay or grain; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the double trapezoidal fence-sections, composed each of two trapezoidal frames hinged one above the other, said sections being connected side by side in annular series, forming an inclosure, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the double sections, each being composed oflower frames, B, and upper frames, 0, of trapezoidal form, arranged one below the other, and hinged together at their adjacent edges by means of staples a or other common hinge-connections. These hinges a are arranged at the outside of the meeting edges of the two frames, so that the upper frame can be turned down outside the lower frame when desirable. These frames B and O are composed of side bars, 12, and slats c, placed at a sufficient distance from each other to provide for free ventilation. The sections A thus composed are arranged side by side to form an annular or elongated inclosure, suitable in the first ease to protect a stack and in the second case a rick. When the device is to be applied toa rick the frames for the sides of the rick may be made longer than the others, which'are applied to the bends. These sections A A are connected laterally by means of hooks d and eyes 0, the lower frames,B, having two sets of hooks and eyes arranged near their upper and lower ends, and the upper sections, 0, which are hinged to the lower frames, having one set of hooks and eyes near their upper ends, as indicated in the drawings.

The hooks and eyes are applied to the outside of the frames at their side edges, which abut against each other when the sections are set up in the form of an inclosure. Usually the trapezoidal frames B, which form the lower part of the inclosure, are set-with their smaller ends downward, so that they incline outward, forming, when set up on the ground, a receptacle which is somewhat flaring. Into this receptacle or inclosure the hay oigrain is packed, the upper frames, O, being turned down to enable this to be readily accomplished. When the stack or rick is formed or nearly formed the upper frames are turned up against it and laterally connected together by means of their hooks and eyes. The packing can then, if necessary, be completed in the upper part of the inclosure. The weight of the contents of the inclosing barrier acts outwardly and downwardl y, bracing the sections at the connections, so that they cannot be casually disconnected, and holding the barrier down at all points.

The upper frames are usually made somewhat convex exteriorly, and one of them is designed to he provided with an inner hook, h, at its upper portion, which is designed to hold a bucket of salt.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The stack or lick barrier consisting of a series of .double trapezoidal sections, A, each composed oftwo trapezoidal frames hinged one above the other, said sections being connected side by side, forming an inclosing barrier, substantially as specified.
