The present invention relates to the jewelry art, and has particular reference to a novel ornamentation therefor. v

The principal object of the invention is to provide a jewelry construction for selectively receiving ornamentation such as initial letters and the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a jewelry base into which selected ornamentations may be releasably received.

Still another object is to provide a jewelry base adapted to snap receive stamped out initia1s,the parts being designed to simulate solid constructions.

A further object of the invention is to provide a selective ornamentation having a multicolor effect.

With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.

It has been found desirable to provide jewelry such as tie holders, cuff links, lockets, pins and the like with bases designed to receive snap-in ornamentation such as initials, the parts being conformed to simulate a solid construction, and being arranged to provide a multi-color effect whenever desired. To this end, we form an ornament base with spaced raised holding elements which are adapted to snap receive the ends of a metal ornament such as an initial, and we conform the base and the ornament to simulate a solid construction. We further provide a seat for a color background which cooperates with cut out portions of the ornaments to provide a two-tone or a vari-toned ornamental effect.

2 Claims. (Cl. 40-140) Referring to the drawings, which illustrate tie holders to which the invention is applied, the tie holder ID has an ornamental front portion I I and a back grip element I2 which cooperates with the front portion to grip a tie and a shirt hem therebetween. An ornament housing 13 is mounted on the front portion, preferably by soldering, and includes a base plate It, ends [5, l6, and sides l1, l8, the ends and sides being shaped to conform to ornaments, as hereinafter described. Transverse parallel lock bars iii are mounted between the sides l1, spaced above the base plate M as indicated in Fig. 3, and horizontally spaced to define an ornament compartment 20. The illustrated embodiment discloses three compartments 20, to receive three ornaments.

Novel ornaments 2|, see Figs. 4, 5, are provided, preferably in the form of cut-out initials, the ornaments being stamped from resilient sheet metal and shaped as illustrated in Fig. 2, with raised upstanding arcuate faces 22, a forward generally sloping edge 23, and a rear rounded edge 24 having a sharply turned end 25 to provide a projecting portion 26. The ornament is preferably slightly recessed at its sides 21, 28 to provide side spacer tabs 29 adjacent the rear edge and side spacer tabs 3% adjacent the front edge, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.

When mounting an ornament 2i in a compartment 20, the front edge 23 is inserted under one lock bar I9, and the rear edge 24 is snapped past the next lock bar l9, whereupon the ornament becomes locked in place as illustrated in Fig. 2, with the spacer tabs 29 and 30 locating the ornament between the sides I! and M3; the sides I! and i8, as previously stated, conform to .the outline and shape of the ornament. A color sheet 3| is preferably positioned over the base plate I4, and the cut out portions of the ornament disclose the color sheet 3i to give a multicolor eifect, as shown in Fig. 1.

We have disclosed a curved ornament in Figs. 1 to 5, but any suitable shape may be utilized. The ornament 32, see Fig. 6, is generally triangular, with plane surfaces 33 and 34, but has the same type of front edge 35 and the same type of rear edge 36 to cooperate with the lock bars l9 and the compartments 20 as heretofore described.

Another suitable ornament shape is disclosed in Fig. 7, wherein the ornament 3'! has a dished upper portion 38, a sloping front portion 39 and an arcuate rear portion 40, the front edge M and. the rear edge 42 being similar to the construclB, vertically A tions heretofore described, for cooperation with the lock bars l9 and the compartments 20.

Any desired number of compartments 20 may be provided, and the shape and arrangement of the compartments may be suitably modified, to provide different ornamental effects. Thus, referring to Fig. 8, the tie holder 43 has a tapered front element 44 and the compartment 45 is at the forward edge and is of quarter round type, to receive a quarter round initial 46 which has its forward edge 4! positioned under a forward lock bar 48 and its rear edge 49 shaped as hereinbefore described to snap beneath --a'rear-lock bar 50. A backing color strip in maybe-provided, if desired.

Although we have described the invention as applied to a tie holder, other jewelry items such 7 as cuff links, buckles, lockets, pins and the like may be formed to embody the invention, and the size, shape, and arrangement of the ornaments may be varied as desired, withinthe spirit and the scope of the invention as defined-in the appended claims.

We claim:

1. An ornamentation for'jewelry, comprising a compartment having a base plate and. upstanding sides, spaced intermediate rigid lock bars mounted between said sides and positioned above the base plate, and an ornament of resilient material having an upstanding face portion, a sloping front edge positioned under one look bar to rest on the base plate, and an arcuate rear edge snapped past a second look bar, whereby the front and rear edges of the ornament cooperate with spaced lock bars to removably retain the ornament in the compartment.

An ornamentation for jewelry, comprising a compartment having a base plate and upstanding sides, spaced intermediate rigid lock bars mounted betweemsaidsides and positioned :above'thei baseiiplate,sandman ornament of resilient material having an upstandin face portion, a sloping front edge positioned under one look bar to rest on the base plate, and an arcuate rearzedgesnappd past a second look bar, whereby the front and rear edges of the ornament coop- ;erate withlspacedelock bars to removably retain theaornamentlinethe compartment, the sides of the ornament having tabs at the front and rear edges forming spacer elements for centering the K ornament .betweenithe compartment sides.
