Description

- 4 L. KIEFER.
REEL LOOK. N0. 254,025". Patented Feb. 21,1882.
*Qmwik\ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
LOUIS A. KIEFER, OF INDIAlVAPOLIS, INDIANA.
REEL-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,025, dated February 21 1882.
Application filed January 3, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, LOUIS A. KIEFER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and in' the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reel and other Locks 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, makinga part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in looking devices for attaching reels to fishing-rods, although it may be applied with advantage to other purposes; and it has for its object to provide a means whereby a reel may conveniently and securely be fastened to a rod, as more fully hereinafter specified. This object I obtain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a section of a fishingrod, showing my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of a portion of a rod showing my invention. Fig. 2 5 3 represents a transverse section of the rod and its attachment; and Fig. 4, a detached view 'of the reel-support, looking at the bottom of the same.
The letter A indicates a portion of a fishing- 0 rod, which may be of any suitable description. B indicates a metallic plate, curved to fit the rod and adapted to be secured thereto by means of screws 0 or other fastening devices. The said plate is provided with a flat button, D, 5 cut away on one side, as indicated by the letter E, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
The letter F indicates the device containing the locking mechanism to which the reel is to be attached, the said device forming a support for or constituting the base of the reel-frame. The said device consists of a metallic block having a boss, G, on .its lower side, and provided with a circular seat for the button D, the front portion of the boss being cut away, 5 as indicated by the letter H, to permit the device to be passed over the button in a longitudinal direction. The head of the button is of a diameter somewhat less than the circular seat, so that the device may be readily turned upon the button when placed thereon.
The letter I indicates a flat spring secured at one end to the block F. The free end of said spring is provided with an angular plate. K, which rests when in a normal position in the opening in the front or cut-away portion of the boss before mentioned.
The letter L indicates a transverse strip of metal secured to the plate K, by means of which it can be manipulated to unlock the device, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
The operation of my device is as follows: The block F is passed longitudinally back ard over the button D, the head entering the opening at the front of the boss, the plate K being automatically pressed upward and out. of the way. When the block F has been thus placed upon the button it is turned on the same at right angles to its longitudinal position, when the straight side of the plate K will enga e the straight or cut-away side of the button and lock the parts firmly together. To remove the device the plate K is elevated by means oi" Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-- The combination, with the metallic plate provided with a button cut away on one side, of the metallic block having a boss and recess, the boss being cut away in front to permit the device to be passed over the head of the button, and the spring and angular plate attached thereto, and the transverse strip for operating the same, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes specitied'.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day or" December, 1881.
LOUIS A. KIEFER.
