Description

UNTED STATS PATENT OFFC' SYLVANUS A. DENIO, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PRISON-LOCK.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SrLvANUs A. DENIo,
of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and .State of lvlassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for Prison-Doors, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same.
In referring to said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the cell wall with my lock attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a Vportion of the cell wall, on a reduced scale from Fig. l, with my lock applied thereto and showing the entire cell door. Fig. 3 is a transverse and horizontal section on a level plane through the shaft c, and showing some of the parts below.
Invention-The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of two locks, or parts, the larger of which has a case, constructed of one solid piece of chilled cast iron or hard metal, and embedded in the stone work when laid, and never to be removed, and held therein by lips b', and which case receives and a shaft, with eccentric and bolt, for bolting and locking the cell door, and a mortised collar on shaft, which in turn becomes locked by smaller or interior lock all simply by turning a knob. The interior lock being easily removable from the exterior one when the former is unlocked and at the same time allowing all the parts of the exterior lock to be also removed, and by locking, an additional security is given the lock to the stone work for holding the lock therein, all as will be hereafter seen.
a a in the drawings represent the brick or stone work.
Z) b is an iron box or casing inserted in the stone work a a flush with the face of the same. Through this iron box b b extends a shaft c c having a suitable handle or knob Z projecting from the face of the box. On the shaft c c immediately inside of the front plate of the box, is a collar e having a mortise f formed therein. The mortise f receives the bolt g of a lever lock la z. shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, when the lock is locked, thereby of course holding the shaft c c and preventing its being turned. On withdrawing the bolt g from the groove j' the shaft c c can be turned.
On that end of the shaft c c most remote from the face of the lock is formed an eccentric c' moving` in a suitable recess formed in the locking bolt c, which plays in and out of the stile Z of the door, according as the shaft c c is turned. Vhen the bolt is made to enter the stile by turning the knob (Z the shaft c c is then locked and prevented from turning by means of the lock ZL h as before explained, thereby securely locking the door which can not be unlocked except by a proper key inserted in the lock /L L which is entirely beyond the prisoners reach.
In order to prevent the lock /z ZL from being by any possibility removed from the jambs of the door or lock Z) it has formed on its back plate a lip m which bears against the inner face of the front plate of the iron box b b Z) and this, it will be seen taken in connection with the fact that the bolt g is inserted in the groove of the shaft c. c, renders it impossible to remove the lock except when it has been unlocked by the key, as the lip m forms one bearing against the inner face of the front plate of the box b b and the bolt g of the lock It 71, another in the shaft c c which prevents its being drawn out of the case b.
It will be seen that the frontal portion 0 of the lock Zz is so shaped as to form, in conjunction with case Z1, the front bearing for shaft c, to turn in, so that when the lock la, is removed from case Z9, the shaft c, and bolt 7c, can easily be removed, if desired and without disturbing case Z). The eccentric z' operates upon bolt Za, to move it into and hold it fast when so moved into the stile Z, of the door, and to make my invention perfectly sure to effect the object desired I construct a lock or part Zz, before described, and so combine it with lock or part b, that by simply turning the knob d, in one direction the door Z, will first be locked securely, then .the shaft c, itself also becomes locked, and which is also very secure when locked, and also very easily unlocked by inserting a proper key into lock h, the bolt g, can be thrown back, and the Adoor Z, unlocked by simply turning the knob eZ. The peculiar construction of the two parts b and its parts and Zz, and its parts therein and the manner in which they are combined with each other constitutes a novel very secure and safe lock, entirely removed from the door and reach of the prisoner, and it is securely and instantly locked without a key by simply turning tbe lmob d.. liis knob Mry, if desir-"ed, I cured with lock i, which in turn locks the 10 be turned only to lock the door Z, Without locking the shaft c.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lock or part b, with its parts c, e, z', and 7c, arranged with each other as described, to move, hold and lock the bolt 7c, in door Z, When combined positioned and seshaft c, lll by turning" single knob, all parts being Constructed and operated in the peculiar manner describedand for the purposes fully set forth.
